Greetings!
Last week I joked about getting my first gray hair. (If you missed last week's newsletter you can read it here.) Well, I got a lot of e-mail replies back on that one! I have learned that I am LUCKY to have only one gray hair as many of you pointed out. And I thought my husband wasn't sensitive! :) O.K., point taken, and you are right. Thanks for your funny feedback!
If you didn't get a flashlight yet, you can still wear your gray and get one. I ordered hundreds of those things so we still have plenty.

Recipe of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This week our recipe comes from Marcie Fuhrman. Marcie works at the farm; I'm sure many of you have had the pleasure of meeting her. Since we have plenty of rhubarb and strawberries, the recipe is for strawberry-rhubarb pie. Let Marcie know how you like it!
Weekend Special
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In addition to ice cream, stop on out for lunch or dinner this weekend. You can choose from Pork BBQ, Coleslaw, and a drink (all homemade), or a Hot Dog, Chips, Slice of Watermelon, and a drink.
You can also get a Fresh Strawberry Sundae, Milkshake, or Shortcake or try some Hershey's Ice Cream. It's supposed to be a beautiful weekend! |
Bonus Recipe
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My son's social studies class has finished a year of studying world geography. In celebration, they are having a lunch made from recipes from around the world. I was in charge of a Middle Eastern recipe, Date Bars.
Now, we obviously don't grow dates or any other ingredients in the recipe! Because of this I'm not going to put it on the web site. But, I thought it was so good I wanted to share it with you anyway!
I never buy dates. They are pretty ugly. They really don't look like something you want to eat at all. I guess I shouldn't be so judgmental because I really thought it was going to taste terrible. I was wrong. It's delicious. (And you don't need to e-mail me to tell me I should be open to more foods; I already know this! My mother will testify to that...and my daughter is proof that it's genetic...ha, ha, ha.)
In the Middle East it is served in the evening following dinner with coffee, tea, or milk. I hope you enjoy it!
Date Bars:
-
1 c rolled oats, plain or instant
-
1/2 c all-purpose flour
-
1/2 t baking powder
-
1/2 c dark brown sugar
-
1/2 t salt
-
1 t cinnamon
-
1 c melted butter or margarine
-
2 eggs, well beaten
-
1 c finely chopped pitted dates (cut with scissors)
-
1 c chopped walnuts
-
1/2 c confectioners' sugar for garnish
-
Put oats, flour, baking powder, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon in mixing bowl and mix well.
-
Add butter or margarine, eggs, dates, and nuts and mix well using clean hands (I used a fork and it worked just fine).
-
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
-
Put mixture into greased 8-inch baking pan and bake for 35 minutes, until firm.
-
Remove from oven and cut while warm into 1 1/2 inch squares.
-
Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
-
Store in covered bowl and refrigerate. |
