Paulus Orchards
Greetings!

The warm fall has caused the apples to ripen quickly this year and unfortunately this will most likely be the last weekend for u-pick apples.  U-pick apples for this weekend will be Fuji, Stayman, and Rome.

The u-pick pumpkins and corn maze will continue to be open every weekend until November 2nd.  There are plenty of pumpkins still out there - come find the perfect one!

Make sure you try the maze too if you haven't already done so.  Did you hear Bob 94.9 this past Tuesday?  Nancy and Newman sent their intern (they call him Mississippi) to the maze and had him do it on air.  That was fun.  He was a good sport.  I let him go backwards a few times, but he made it out in 35-40 minutes (of course he RAN the entire back half).  Nancy wanted me to blindfold him.  But then he would have just walked through the corn and knocked it down so we decided not to do that.

Stayman apples are here!  I think Stayman is second only to Honeycrisp in the amount of phone calls we get asking for them.  They are moderately tart, good for eating, and perfect for pies and dumplings.  They also work well in the pork roast with apples recipe that you can find on our web site (number 13 in the apple section).  This is one of our favorite recipes.  It's a crockpot recipe, great for anyone who is busy - and that's all of us, right?

Empire and Rome apples are also new this week.

Starting Saturday we will have fresh baked pies for sale.  Paulus Farm Market, owned by Jim (Dan's brother) and Amy (Jim's wife), has a bakery and they have been making the yummy cookies, whoopie pies, and apple dumplings we've had this year.  A number of people have asked for pies, so we will have them too.  I'm sure I will eat anything we don't sell, so save me from over eating and grab a pie this weekend.  You can find them in the refrigerator next to the apple cider.

Flash Light Maze - ONE NIGHT ONLY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You asked for it...so we're giving it a try!  Come out on Friday, October 31st (Yes - that's Halloween) for a night of fun!  This is NOT a haunted event.  It's simply the maze in the dark.
You may enter the maze anytime between 6:30 and 8:30 only.  The entrance will close promptly at 8:30 so make sure you aren't late!  Everyone MUST have a flashlight to be admitted.  Cost is $7 for all ages.
Congratulations Chris and Heather!
Some of you know my brother, Chris.  He helped us almost every weekend in the corn maze the first year we added it.  Chris is getting married today.  I am gaining a wonderful new sister-in-law.  Growing up I didn't have any sisters; now I'll have 3 sister-in-laws all living within an hours drive.  I love having family close by.
So I realize this has absolutely nothing to do with the orchard, but he's my only brother so I had to publicly wish him well!  All three of my kids are in the wedding.  Which is really nice.  I'm just hoping that they don't do anything crazy!  Don't we all have a crazy story to tell about our own wedding?  Hmmm...I had a bridesmaid pass out during the service, I had a guest spill a drink on my wedding dress during the reception, Dan's friends had the DJ play "It's the end of the world as we know it"....but 18 years later we're still going strong and I'd take that crazy day all over again!  I'm just really hoping that Chris and Heather's story won't involve my kids!
Recipe of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week's recipe is for Pumpkin Cookies.  It comes from the wife of one of my chemistry professors in college.  She made them for the students.  They are wonderful.  They are more like little cakes than cookies.  I hope you like them as much as I do!
