Paulus Orchards
Greetings!

Both Red and Golden Delicious apples will be available for u-pick this weekend.  Usually Golden Delicious comes first, and Red a little bit later, but this year seems to be the exception.  You can come and pick both this weekend.  While you're here, give the corn maze a try and enjoy a free wagon ride.

U-Pick Pumpkins will open in one week, September 27th and 28th.
Cancer Society Fundraiser
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am happy and sad at the same time as I write this week's e-mail.
The happy...The silent auction went well, raising just over $600.  I am so thankful to all of the businesses and individual people who donated items for the auction.  You have my sincere appreciation.  Without you, the weekend could not have been successful.  Thank you to all of you who came out to bid.  I called all of the winners Monday.
My children raised about $100 selling pictures this summer.  Thank you to everyone who bought a picture from them!  They were so excited to be able to help.
Unfortunately, the maze didn't do very well due to the hot, humid weather, but our goal was $1,000 and I am happy to say that we are going to donate the extra to get us to $1,000 again this year for the American Cancer Society.  This is the happy part!
The sad part is that we lost a dear friend to cancer the day before the fund raiser.  I have been in a fog all week.  Many of you probably remember Gary Myers.  Gary worked in the corn maze last year and a tiny bit the year before that.  Do you remember a man in his early 50's having tons of fun with all of the people around him in the maze?  That was Gary.  Gary was one of the most (if not the most) positive, upbeat, energetic people I have ever known.
He came out to the farm with his mother to visit only a week and a half ago.  He threw an apple at me.  :)  That's Gary.  I can't tell you how thankful I am that I had that day.  That "one more day."  That day of hugs and laughter.  He will be missed.  I can't say enough positive things about him.  So this year, as I write the check through tear filled eyes, I will think of Gary and pray that the money will help other people out there just like him.  I am sure that many of you have your own "Gary" stories and my heart goes out to you.  I am happy that we did the fund raiser and it will continue each year.
New this week is Daybreak Fuji's.  This is an early variety of Fuji.  We had them last year too.  The regular Fuji is picked in late October.  This is an early variety that is just as good - I ate one today.  Very sweet.  We will have them for a couple of weeks.
On Saturday we will have Jonagold apples.  Another one of my favorites.  Really great flavor.
Recipe of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This week's recipe was e-mailed to me by Myra Leonard.  Thanks Myra!  It's Vegetable Soup.  I made it the same day she e-mailed it to me.  I'm one of those people that has a hard time coming up with dinner ideas so when someone makes a suggestion I run with it!  Her family loves it as written.  I enjoyed it too, but I think I would like it even more with some ground beef and stewed tomatoes added to the ingredients.  You can make it and let me know how you do it.

I'm always up for new recipes.  So feel free to send me one of your favorites!
