Paulus Orchards
Greetings!

Do you know what makes a good peach?  This is the subject of my newsletter this week.  So do you?  Easy answer - a good peach is a Paulus Peach!  O.K. - so maybe you're looking for a little more...

The secret ingredient to a good peach is...(pause for effect)...the weather.  It isn't the variety of peach.  A Red Haven peach this year will taste different than a Red Haven next year if the weather is really different.  I know some of you will argue with me and think I'm nuts to say it's weather more than the variety.  And that's O.K.  Really.  It's O.K. because I need you.  I need you to run to the stand when we announce that we have Red Haven, Sun High, Loring, or...you get the picture.  (Red Haven people - you can start running.)

The weather has been perfect this year for peaches.  There are lots of them and they taste great.  All it takes is a tiny bit of patience.  What?  You don't have that?  I'm terribly sorry.  If I could sell you perfect peaches ready to eat as you walk out the door I would.  But the truth is - peaches are an extremely fragile fruit.  Much more fragile than apples.  You will want to put your peaches on your kitchen counter and give them about 3 days to soften.  Then you will have soft, sweet peaches.  Juice will literally drip out of your mouth.   So Karen - sell me those - you say.  I can't keep them from bruising if they are soft.  As soon as I put another peach on top, the weight will damage the bottom peach.  So I guess you'll have to buy a basket of peaches and a truckload of patience.  :)
Farm Stand
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
New this week are Red Haven Peaches, White Peaches, Do-Nut Peaches, Yellow Plums, Nectarines, and Blackberries.  For a complete listing of what's available at the stand click here.
Have you had a white peach before?  If not, you might want to give them a try.  White peaches are less acidic than yellow peaches and have a sweeter taste.  Do Nut peaches are a special kind of white peach that are even sweeter yet.  They're my favorite.  But those of you who don't have that sweet tooth might prefer the yellow.  Dan prefers yellow.  Not me - the sweeter the better.  Is there a thing as too sweet?  Maybe, but I haven't found it in fruit anyhow.
Don't forget to bring those Thank You Program cards back.  You get a 10% discount when you bring your card in.  (They were mailed out to everyone who signed up last year for the program.)  Don't feel left out if you didn't sign up.  You can sign up now and we'll mail you a gift certificate just for signing up.  Can't beat that!
U-Pick Blueberries
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Saturday is your last chance to pick your own blueberries.   There are a lot of berries out there!  We'll still have berries in the stand, but we'll be picking them after Saturday since they will begin to slow down.  But I promise you - that's not the case for this Saturday.  They are still plentiful.  So if you haven't come out yet, make plans now.  The cost is only $2 per pound.

Recipe of the Week
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was initially going to use a peach recipe - seems appropriate - but I already have some excellent peach recipes on the recipe page.  Blackberries are in right now, so if you've never made the Blackberry Peach Pie you might want to give it a try.
Anyhow, I decided to go with a cabbage recipe because cabbage is in season, we have it at the stand, and I don't have any other cabbage recipes listed.  This is a filling meal.  Kind of like spaghetti but instead of noodles it's cabbage.  It's called Sausage-Sauced Cabbage.  It's another recipe from Dan's mom!  Give it a try!
