TWO FREQUENT TOO FREQUENT MISTAKES
-- NONE IS SINGULAR
-- MYSELF IS NOT A SUBJECT

Here are two frequent errors to watch out for as the year ends and a new one begins.

NONE IS SINGULAR

 Naturally the press wanted to hear from the principal. After all, Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria, VA was named the top high school in the country by "U.S. News & World Report."

Principal Evan Glazer declared, "None of our students have the same passion. But having a passion is widely accepted and embraced."

Let's hope that they don't embrace his language passionately. The noun "none" is singular, requring the verb "has" in this instance.

According to the "Los Angeles Times" in February, "None of the men held at Guantanamo were advised of their rights against self- incrimination."

Think of "none" to mean "not one," "no one," or "not any."


MYSELF IS NOT A SUBJECT
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 Golfer Michelle Wie had some comments about the Tiger Woods matter.

"We used to train together," she said, "but both myself and Tiger have been very busy lately and therefore haven't seen, or heard from each other as frequently."

"Tiger and I" would be correct since "myself" is still not a subject.


LETTERS, WE GET LETTERS

 More than one subscriber pointed out that the letter from my daughter in the last issue had some errors. True. My objective was to show her gratitude, not her English skills.

You may remember the coed who called home.

"Daddy," she sniffed, "I'm pregnant and I ain't gonna graduate."

"What!" he screamed. "After all the money I've spent on your education, you have the nerve to call here and use the word "ain't!"
