WRITING YOUR PARENTS
-- A LETTER FROM MY DAUGHTER
-- HOW THE MASTERS SAID BE THANKFUL

Have you written your parents lately?

A LETTER FROM MY DAUGHTER
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm not exposing her publicly. I know that the last thing to be worried about is whether she subscribes to my newsletter. After all, she's heard me speaking at the dinner table so many times about the same old things.
But her recent letter encourages me to ask if you have written to your parents lately; or a relative? Or have you told your kids that they should write to their elders?
My son was in the hospital for several weeks last spring. Eventually he underwent heart surgery and has recovered. No parent wants to endure that combination of stress and defenslessness.
My daughter, who lives 200 miles away, wrote this:
"I did want you to know that I do appreciate the way that you've always been there for Brian and I as a father."
"I appreciate the ballet classes, the dedicated novels, the jewelry--oh my god, yes--the jewerlry! The 14k gold love knot earrings, the gold & emerald love knot necklace that I think you bought me in Bermuda, the turquoise blue-colored ea de parfum from Bermuda, the classes at Henry Barnard School, Disney World, family visits to Mommom and Poppop's house in Atlantic City, the photographs, the trip to Atlanta were we were somewhere at the airport plaza which revolves so that you can see the whole city, the little Indian doll from Wyoming, the African doll from either Ghana or Nigeria, the trip to France and the spending allowance...I am forever in appreciation."
When do we take the time to sit down to express our thanks to our parents? This upcoming holiday season offers a good opportunity for changing your communicative ways if you have been guilty.
Who deserves the thank-you better?
Equally important is the promotion of the thankfulness idea to your children. They can thank their relatives, their teachers, their coaches.
These letters have more effect than the text message, the email, or the answering machine note. You have to sit down to write a letter. And that's what the recipient appreciates.
HOW THE MASTERS SAID BE THANKFUL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Our great thinkers have penned words of thanks that you should not be afraid to improvise on or just outright repeat.

Cicero: " There is no quality I would rather have, and be thought to have, than gratitude."

Book of Common Prayer: "A joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful."

Nicohlas Rowe, poet laureate: "Though my mouth be dumb, my heart shall thank you."

Seneca: "Nothing is more honorable than a grateful heart."

Sincerely,
Barry Beckham
