Thanks to a subscriber who is a high school classmate, in the next issue I will present a bunch of humorous blunders. Meanwhile, you may find some chuckles in today's illustration.

WHEN INTERESTING IS NOT INTERESTING

 "Interesting" is not so interesting, you may have noticed.

We use the word so casually, so lazily, that we often overlook its exceedingly uninteresting--and imprecise--meaning.

Here are some examples:

Says one baseball blog, "Turns out the Detroit Tigers' designated hitter had a pretty interesting offseason. He met President Barack Obama on Oct. 20 at Legends Field in Tampa two weeks before the election."

"Unbeknownst to many students, instructors have some of the most interesting life stories and experiences that stem from their area of study," we learn from Royalpurplenews.com.

"It is interesting to watch the process and to see how the judges come to their conclusions," we are told at Allatsea.net.

It's been an interesting 168 hours since I woke up to field my weekly Monday morning teleconference call with Purdue coach Matt Painter," wrote Jon Sciotte in the JournalReview.com

And finally, we read in the StatesmanJournal.com, that Mission Mill Museum's "Facing Statehood" exhibit revealed many interesting facts about Oregon.

Remind yourself today that you won't say, "That's interesting" for a month. Try these words that could arguably replace "interesting" in each instance above:
  • remarkable
  • fascinating
  • intriguing
