Dave's Desk - Spring 2011
Dave Hunter
| The spring semester has now started for all of our chapters and the spring looks to be good for Zeta Psi. All 40 of our active chapters look to be in good shape. Our colony at Western Ontario is well on its way to reacting rechartering status later this spring. Our new venture in Scotland at St. Andrews is heading towards colony status this month and a chartering in late fall. The fraternity initiated 310 active members last fall and we look to do something similar this spring. Keep an eye on your mailbox as the 2011 edition of The Circle (digital version) should arrive in the next few weeks. You'll find it another exciting and info filled magazine. And start making plans for August 17 to 21, 2011 in New York City for our 164 Annual Convention as we're planning for the largest gathering of Zetes in our history. I hope you'll be part of it. Thank you for your support of Zeta Psi.
Sincerely in Tau Kappa Phi,
Dave Hunter, IA '80 (email me) |

Leadership Training Institute On January 7-9, Zeta Psi's annual Kirby Phi Leadership Conference was held at Lafayette College in Easton, PA. Nearly all Chapter Phis were in attendance for the full weekend. The purpose of the program is to develop programming specific to Chapter Presidents that allow them to build on their leadership experience and more effectively run their Chapters. Additionally, significant feedback on current services and operations is collected, allowing both the Fraternity and the Foundation to better serve Chapters.
Special thanks to all faculty participation including Lauck Walton (Phi Alpha), Jared Sunshine, Steve Halperin, Anthony Shibata, Alan van den Arend, Fernando Cortes, (Washington Scholars), and our Chapter consultants Sims McGrath (Eta Chapter Consultant), Eric Landry, Brock Clancy (Canada) and Tyler Boisvert. Please be on the lookout for additional Regional LTRIs that will be taking place over the course of this semester: NYC, DC, Midwest (Cleveland), Toronto (Canadian), Deep South (Texas), and Southern (UNC.)

Recruitment Survey Attention all Actives and Elders: please be on the lookout for future emails regarding a survey that we will be sending to collect comprehensive data related to our Chapter recruitment efforts over the past several decades. This will be a major push to collect strategic information from our members to better support recruitment in the future.
Call for Faculty Brothers, as you may know, our LTI program has been undergoing rapid changes over the past several years. In order to continue to meet the ever-growing demands of our International LTI program, we are calling for interested parties to join our Faculty!
At this time we are looking for elders who either have experience/ expertise in certain key fields or are located in geographies currently under-represented by our standing faculty. Specifically, if you - Are an attorney who would be willing to teach at 1-2 LTIs per year. Our legal suite of courses is in high demand and we need this level of expertise to support our members!
- Are currently living in the Midwest, Southeast, Southwest or Western part f the United States and have experience with facilitation.
Please contact us if you meet any of these and are willing to work with us over the course of the next year. You can contact Maurice Ducoing at mauruiceducoing@gmail.com to inquire further. |
Kirby Leadership Conference

Leaders from 38 Zeta Psi chapters gathered on the campus of Lafayette College for the Kirby Leadership Conference in early January.
Attendees learned about leading chapters and shared best practices with each other in small group discussion. The weekend provided a value experience to the Zetes leading our chapters in 2011.
Thanks to our many volunteers, to the Tau Chapter for it hosting, and to the Kirby Foundation for its generous grant that allows Zeta Psi to hold this event.

PHI ALPHA - Happy New Year! Lauck Walton
|
Happy New Year. Zeta Psi enters 2011 in a strong position. While our chapter count remains in the low 40s - our Active membership is growing. Our individual chapters are larger and are initiating more Brothers than at any time in our history. This success is an outcome of our strategic planning process started almost a decade ago under the leadership of Bob Busteed from the Omicron Chapter at Nebraska Wesleyan. The premise of the Committee and the Trustees that approved the plan was that all "strong" chapters consistently initiated and retained at least ten men a year and were supported by outstanding Elders - as advisors and benefactors.
In support of our strategic plan, we have improved the level and quality of our international headquarters staff under the leadership of Executive Director, Dave Hunter. Our Leadership Training program is exemplary and widely viewed as one of the strongest in all the Greek system. It is supported by a team of volunteers on the Membership Education committee chaired by Maurice Ducoing, now a ZPEF Board member, from the Psi Chapter at Cornell University, and funded through our Educational Foundation. The Foundation also supports the efforts of the Director of Alumni Development, Sim Brigden to improve alumni leadership, organization, and communication which are beginning to pay dividends.
Still, we have challenges. The Educational Foundation's program budget covers the costs of our LTI, our scholarship programs, and our support of intern programs in Washington DC and New York. Our outstanding educational programs need more Elder financial support. Our current annual donors are a tiny fraction of the Elder base. If you are among them, thank you. If you are not, please consider supporting these programs by clicking on this DONATIONS link. It will take you to the Zeta Psi website, where you can make a donation through PayPal or a major credit card immediately.
Looking ahead, the signature Zeta Psi event of 2011 will be the 164th Annual Convention on the Hudson. The dates are August 17-20. We expect this to be the largest gathering of Zetes this century. Hope you can join us!
Faithfully in Tau Kappa Phi,
Lauck Walton, Phi Alpha CXXXIII
