Dave's Desk - Fall Progress for Zeta Psi
Zeta Psi is having a strong fall recruitment cycle with 350 pledges for the 33 chapters which have finished recruiting this fall. We also have three interest groups at Western Ontario, Sta. Andrews (Scotland), and George Washington that compromises another 55 men. Some notable pledge classes are Phi Lambda at Washington with 28, Omicron at Nebraska Wesleyan with 22, and Upsilon at UNC with 21.
On the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation side, after a successful convention LTI Zeta Psi has sponsored the Northeast LTI at WPI and the Upstate NY LTI at Cornell with a total of 100 actives in attendance. In early November we'll host the Pacific LTI at Berkeley with the expectation of 50 members in attendance. Zeta Psi has over 70 scholarship applications submitted for consideration this fall. We expect to award $25,000 in scholarships to 30 recipients this fall. Spring applications are due January 31, 2011 and the application can be found on our website. $55,000 in scholar grants were given to 21 interns filling positions in Washington D.C and New York City.
These three foundation programs - leadership training, scholarships, and intern grants - are the backbone of the foundation support of continuing member development. None of these programs could be offered without the generous support of many fine Zetes like you. Our winter donation mailing is going out soon so please consider Zeta Psi with your end-of-year giving, our undergraduate members both appreciate the gift and greatly benefit from the programs your gift supports. Thank you!!! Sincerely in Tau Kappa Phi,
T.K.Phi, Dave Hunter, IA '80 (email me) |

ChiRAC and Top Ten
Sim Brigden
| As you read this, the storm clouds will have cleared, the winds subsided, the detritus cleaned from the roads and our Phi Alpha CXXXIII, Lauck Walton Pi '84, will have already kicked off the fall in The Windy City with the inaugural meeting of the Chicago Regional Alumni Group (ChiRAC). The function is called: "In the Loop with Lauck!" held at The Tilted Kilt, Oct 12th 7:00 PM onwards... | Chirac: "Je ne suis pas un Zete!" |
When we were working on the group's name, we were mighty pissed , ahem, disappointed that www.chirac.org was already taken. Just because some guy was the second-longest serving President of France [Not to mention the French co-Prince of Andorra - Ed.], should he not be concerned about Zetes in Chicago?? I mean, he's a politician, right?? Oh, mon dieu! So, we've had to settle on www.zetapsichirac.org for our website (it's just being built - bear with us while we ramp it up). Here are the Top Ten news headlines you might see as a result of the kick-off of ChiRAC:
10. Cleanup of red paint from all buildings in the Loop after Zetes 'Paint the Town Red' | 2 Tilted Kilt Girls: "We are not Zetes either!" |
9. Chicago's productivity mysteriously declines on October 13th 8. Bandwidth problems for LinkedIn traced to Chicago as Zetes follow up on connections made on the 12th 7. Preparations for another Stanley Cup Parade in 2011 upon the news that Theta Xi Brother Vince Burns' nephew, Brandon Pirri, has made the Chicago Blackhawks. 6. Da Bears, Da Bulls, Da Hawks and, of course, Ditka!! (It's Chicago, after all - they'll ALL be in the news!) 5. Unexpected Divorce notices & Birth notices in June 2011 -> 4. Oprah wants to come jump on OUR couch! 3. New reasons for singing The Blues in Chicago 2. Aleve© gains market share. 1. A slight change to Chicago's flag:
If you're a Zete in Illinois [Or just visiting - Ed.] and you have not received notice of the above function, please email me at development@zetapsi.org and I'll ensure that you're on the list for our next function. |
PHI ALPHA - Life-Long Commitment Lauck Walton
|
As November rolls around, we enter the time of the year when many chapters initiate new Brothers into our Circle. For me, initiation was, and still is, something to treasure. My life is radically different because of the decision made thirty years ago to join Zeta Psi.
My best friends are Zetes. My graduation from college was helped by my involvement in Zeta Psi. My first "real" job was working for a Zete. My career has been helped in innumerable ways by Zetes. From weddings to funerals, Zeta Psi has been a lifelong commitment well beyond my undergraduate years.
When I was finishing my pledge period, I remember having a poem from the pledge manual read to me. At the time, I didn't understand it at all. RPI, an engineering school, is not exactly known for its literary scholars, and it was a late night at the end of a hectic day. I remember my pledge Brother, Chris Johnston reading this poem.
When This New Pin Grows Old
Charles Kellogg Field, Mu 1895
We've slipped the bandage from your eyes, We've drawn aside the veil That hides our sacred mysteries From men beyond our pale; And now upon your glad young breast We pin a badge of gold -- You cannot know how richly blest Till this new pin grows old.
How brightly in this mystic gloom It's letters shine for you, While now within our Chapter Room Your eager dream comes true; Ah, many a dream shall drop to dust And many a hope lie cold, But you shall find no hint of rust When this new pin grows old.
This badge proclaims the newest part Of our old endless line As hand to hand and heart to heart We form th' eternal sign; Grip tight the links of this dear chain, God grant they long may hold; You cannot make such friends again When this new pin grows old.
My understanding grew after my initiation. And it grew further as I initiated others into Zeta Psi. As I entered the "real world" beyond college, I saw the difference between the people that had the deeper personal connections with true brothers. It's an obvious chemistry at a Zete convention, alumni event or even a wedding. It's been 30 years since this poem was first read to me, and only now, with the passage of time, can I start to understand how richly I am blest.
New initiates, welcome to our endless circle. I hope that your journey to understanding is as wonderful as mine.
Faithfully in Tau Kappa Phi,
Lauck Walton, Phi Alpha CXXXIII |

Leadership Training Institute
Two LTIs took place in the month of October. The first held at Cornell University took place from October 2-3 and was host to Brothers from Cornell and Binghamton. There was a strong faculty presence as well as experienced Faculty Anthony Shibata, Jared Sunshine, Tom Roerden, Alan van den Arend, Anthony Abbate, and Maurice Ducoing delivered wide variety of classes ranging from Leadership, Career Development, Risk Management, Budgeting, and Project Management.
The second LTI took place at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) over the October 16-17 weekend. Here WPI, RPI, MIT, and Tufts Brothers were in attendance. Also thanks to Faculty members Eric Landry, Tyler Boisvert, Anthony Richardson, Maurice Ducoing, and Anthony Abbate for their participation.
Also, many thanks to the Brothers from Cornell and WPI for being gracious hosts. The next scheduled LTI will take place on November 6 at University of California - Berkley.
Call for Faculty
Brothers, as you may know, our LTI program has been undergoing rapid changes over the past several years. In order to continue to meet the ever-growing demands of our International LTI program, we are calling for interested parties to join our Faculty!
At this time we are looking for elders who either have experience/ expertise in certain key fields or are located in geographies currently under-represented by our standing faculty. Specifically, if you
- Are an attorney who would be willing to teach at 1-2 LTIs per year? Our legal suite of courses is in high demand and we need this level of expertise to support our members!
- Are currently living in the Midwest, Southeast, Southwest or Western part of the United States and have experience with facilitation?
Please contact us if you meet any of these and are willing to work with us over the course of the next year. You can contact Maurice Ducoing at mauruiceducoing@gmail.com to inquire further.
Note: over the course of the next year we will continue to expand and open up the program to others as well.
Foundation Frequent Flier Program Reminder
To collect and utilize donations of Frequent Flier miles from Elders to help defray the monetary costs to the Educational Foundation to provide transportation for undergraduate representatives to Leadership Training Institutes and Conventions, allowing for a more targeted expenditure of the liberated funds toward other educational endeavors.
Process:
1) Elders contact the managing entity (airline, credit-card company, etc.) for their Frequent Flier miles account and specify that they would like to make a gift/transfer of a specific portion of their accumulated miles to one of the following Zeta Psi accounts in the name of Michael Hunter:
a. American - 03BRB22
b. Continental - WM174519
c. Delta - 9403101570
d. JetBlue - 2102789644
e. Southwest - 615534824
f. United - 03261629290
g. USAir - 40067187472
2) The managing entity will process the request for a gift/transfer. The company may impose a small fee ($5-$10) to conduct the transaction.
3) Once the managing entity confirms the completion of the gift/transfer, the Elder contacts the Executive Director of the Educational Foundation, Dave Hunter, at exec.director@zetapsi.org and notifies him that a gift has been made, specifying the amount of miles transferred, any processing fees incurred, and the account into which they were moved.
4) Once the amount of the transfer has been confirmed, the Foundation will mail contributors to the program a letter of recognition for their donation, noting the equivalent monetary value of their miles donation (using the current standard airline conversion rate of $5 = 500 miles) plus any processing fees incurred.
Benefits:
Because of the Foundation's tax-exempt status, donations to the FFF program can be recorded as charitable deductions equivalent to the stated monetary value on the letter of recognition (#4 above) on federal income tax forms.
