Dave's Desk - Convention Next Month
We are only one month away from the
163rd Annual Convention of Zeta Psi Fraternity.
The convention starts
Wednesday August 18th and runs to Sunday August 22nd. We'll be staying
right on Bourbon Street at the Sonesta Hotel in New Orleans. Rooms are
starting to become scare so please go ahead and register for the convention and
reserve your hotel room at www.zeta.psi.org.
The annual convention is a great place to meet fellow Zetes, renew old
friendships, and start new one.
I highly recommend you come!
Ambitious Expansion Plans
When looking at possible new
chapters Zeta Psi always looks first to restart chapters at former Zete
locations. This fall we have three such opportunities with Western
Ontario, Syracuse, and Calgary. At Western we have 20 men that have met
and expressed interest while at Calgary and Syracuse we have small groups that
we can form groups around should things progress as planned. Zeta Psi also pursues opportunities
that present themselves at other highly rated institutions. We have an
interest group from last year at George Washington University that we'll help
move through the chartering process this year. We also have an
opportunity to expand our reach in the United Kingdom with a group 20 men
at St. Andrews University in Scotland (yes, the place with the golf
course). The group at St. Andrews has met with one of our Oxford alumni
and seem "keen" on the idea. Both the GW and St. Andrews groups
will send representatives to the convention in New Orleans. Most new groups evolve from contacts
provided by Zetes. If you know any students at a "Zete-worthy"
school please let us know.
Sincerely in Tau Kappa Phi,

Greetings Zetes!
My name is Michael Schwartz and I am a member of the 2010
Wall Street Scholars class. I have been
interning this summer in NYC for a social media start-up company called Pegshot
and my experience has been absolutely invaluable! Apart from our internships,
the other scholars and I have been networking with NYC Zetes, meeting regularly
to discuss our experiences, and fine-tune our skills in job seeking and
interviewing. Later this month we will
be volunteering here in the city and are helping to plan one of the first open
sessions about the program.
The 2010 Wall Street Scholars class invites you to the
first of several open sessions for employers or companies interested in joining
the program as a Host Company for the summer of 2011! -

Don Robson
Sim Brigden

Sometimes you know a guy who is so
much larger than life that you just have to tell a few stories about him. Last
fall, Donald S. Robson, Theta Xi '74 died. Donald had an amazing career. He was
held various VP and CFO positions at Citibank, Trans Canada Pipelines, LAC
Minerals, Getchel Gold Corporation and Northern Financial. He spoke fluent
French and Spanish. He was also my neighbour and fellow Theta Xi Zete.
In 1982, during the Falkland Islands
war between Argentina and Britain, we were sitting around at Donald's house in
Toronto watching the news. Angry that Commonwealth lives were being
taken, Donald's ire grew and grew. Finally, he decided to 'do something'. He
grabbed the phone and got the operator in Buenos Aires and asked for 'Juan
Valdez' [That's right, the one from the coffee commercials. - Ed.] Somehow, the
operator waded through about 16 Juan Valdezes and put him through to some poor,
innocent who was probably enjoying a quiet dinner with his wife. In perfect
Spanish, Donald admonished the Argentinean for his complicity in the atrocities
that were taking place. To his credit, Sr. Valdez responded: "Do you think
that we want these f-ing generals running our country??!! These crazy bastards
will be the ruin of us all!!!" Donald and Juan went on to have a most pleasant
discussion but I can just imagine Juan at the office the next day: "You
wouldn't believe the phone call I got from this crazy Canadian last night!"
One of Donald's companies bought a
Chilean copper mine from a U.S. Based firm. Donald was sent down to Santiago to
size up the new holdings. He convened a board meeting. The first VP stood up
and started to go through the numbers in a laboured Spanish accent. Donald
said: "We're not Americans. The rest of the meeting will be conducted in
Spanish." Everyone laughed, the meeting went on in Spanish and production rose
by 10% that year. Donald understood people.
At this point, you're probably
wondering why I would relate these tales to you and how they fit in with Alumni
Development. The answer is simple: these are examples of a guy sizing up a
problem and really thinking outside the box. If each and every one of us were
as inspired as Donald and put our energies toward Zeta Psi the same way that he
did [He contributed a great amount to Zeta Psi as well - Ed.], our Fraternity
would be the strongest in Greekland.
Let's all take a page from Donald's
book and 'do something'. Don't just sit there reading this mindless pap!! Get
involved: -
Come to New Orleans for the Convention,
-
Join or support your Alumni association.
-
Help out your Active Chapter with your
time, connections or financial support.
-
Join the Heritage Society.
-
Support The Zeta Psi Foundation
-
Take an Active to Lunch (or Golf)
-
or just plain call up a fellow Zete that
you have not talked to in ages and say hello.
All of it makes Zeta Psi better and
making Zeta Psi better makes young men succeed.
Do it and we all win.

DC Zetes Gather at home of former Phi Alpha
Stephen Hartwell, Tau '36
On June 19th, 65 Zetes, dates and Washington
Scholar interns gathered at the Potomac riverfront home of Steve and Norma
Hartwell to celebrate another year of fraternity in our Nation's Capital.
This was the second time in the past few
years that the DC Elders have hosted our annual summer reception at the
Hartwell's home, and once again, the event and the venue provided a great
chance for old friends to catch up and for our summer residents to network in a
beautiful garden on the grounds of George Washington's estate.
Special thanks for making this event possible
go to Steve and Norma Hartwell for graciously opening up their home to our
brotherhood.
Up ahead, the DC Elders
will be going to the Washington Nationals' game on July 31st - get your tickets now, before we sell out!

Convention Fund Raising Awareness
Will Woldenberg
|
The
Beta Tau Chapter of the Zeta Psi Fraternity is proud to announce a fund raising awareness event to be held for during the 2010 International Convention in New
Orleans!
The event will take place at the Tropical Isle, located on 721 Bourbon Street,
on Friday evening, August 20, 2010 starting at 8:00 p.m. Tropical Isle is home
to the World-Famous Hand Grenade, considered by most to be the second-most
recognizable in New Orleans (behind only the Hurricane).
Friday
evening is considered a "Free" night on the Convention schedule; no formal
events are planned so that all convention-goers can have an opportunity to enjoy
some of the finest meals New Orleans has to offer. We at the Beta Tau Chapter
also hope that you spend some of that free time with us at Tropical Isle to
help save the Beta Tau Chapter House!
And all Convention Sponsors will get into
the event free!
The
Beta Tau Chapter House is in desperate need of repairs to its foundation.
Unlike most homes across the country, most houses in New Orleans have
foundations raised above the ground. Because of damages sustained in Hurricane
Katrina and general wear over time, the Beta Tau Chapter House is beginning to
slide off of its foundation. The estimated cost to repair the house is $30,000 and the fund raising event at Tropical Isle will help raise awareness for Zeta
Psi members, start to raise money for eventual repairs, and provide all
brothers and guests with a great atmosphere for a great time!
For
more details, please contact Will Woldenberg at wwoldenb@gmail.com or
Stephen Halperin at Stephen.halperin@gmail.com

For all
practical purposes, this will be my last UpZete article, at least as Phi
Alpha. Next month is convention and new
men assume the offices that lead this organization. While there is some relief in knowing I won't
have a monthly article deadline, there are some winsome thoughts too. During
my two years as Phi Alpha, I had some objectives I wanted to achieve --- some
were completed; some just started; and some inchoate. But I have no doubt I will remain involved
with Zeta Psi at the chapter, Elder, or even Board levels for many years. And that got me thinking.... After I
joined Zeta Psi and moved from active to Elder, I fully expected to be involved
for a lifetime in some meaningful way. Over those 40 years that involvement has taken a variety of forms,
ultimately as Phi Alpha. But it never
occurred to me that I wouldn't be
involved. I continue to find it
unfathomable why and how brothers Zeta Psi experience lasts a total of about 4
years! In any
organization, formal or informal, only a very small percentage e.g. less than
10% ever become "institutionally" engaged, i.e. actively involved over a period
of time. We have about 27,000 living Zetes; all
fraternities are probably about 10 times that amount. I would be surprised if there were 2,700
Zetes as Elder advisors, Board members, Grand Chapter committee members, local
chapter advisers, i.e. something more than just writing a check (while we
appreciate those that do, and would like more to do so). One of
the great dilemmas of this organization is its inability to connect and engage
with more than a very small percentage of its members, particularly for
fundraising and volunteerism. So, is
Zeta Psi as unique as we like to believe, or is it just an Elks with its own
handshake? I like
to think most organization are self-selecting, i.e. by their promotion, stated
interests and objectives, its own selecting processes, it then attracts those more attuned to those
beliefs than those that are just "joiners". And those that seek and join are similarly more dedicated than the guy
just looking for a party or a bed. I have
absolutely no empirical evidence to this theory whatsoever! Of course, that will not stop me from
proposing my own view. I like
to believe that while the over all participation statistics are not
significantly different than other social groups, the quality is, i.e. that the
10% that accept, believe and commit to a "Zete for life" principal engage fully
and frequently. We see them at
conventions, important local events, as Elder Board members for their, or
other, local chapters. These are the
brothers that constantly supply the backbone, the infrastructure of this whole
organization. I like
to think of myself as one of them, and I would be very satisfied with my term
as Phi Alpha if, in any small way, I was able to influence a few of you to
follow that path. In whatever formal way
you choose, make the commitment to be a "Zete for life". Hopefully your example will influence some
other Zete to also consider why he was chosen and why he chose to be a Zete,
and rise to the occasion. What
better legacy can one have?
