Dave's Desk - Banquets
In the past
weeks I have had the pleasure of attending two chapter banquets. The
banquets were separated my miles and years, but had a common thread - Zeta Psi.
On April 28th I attended the Iota Alumni Banquet celebrating 140 years of Zeta
Psi in California. The next day I hopped on a plane for a short 10 hour
flight to England so I could attend the first alumni banquet of the Iota
Omicron Chapter in Oxford. These two chapters could not be further part
in distance and age, but the shared experience is the same for all Zetes
worldwide - a lifelong brotherhood.
What a treat I had seeing two
strong chapters with such different backgrounds in such different environments. And two weeks from now I get to split the difference - in both years and miles
- and help celebrate 50 years of Zeta Psi at the University of Connecticut!

The Era of the Anthony Comes to a Close
Anthony Abbate
For those of you working
closely with our International Headquarters over the past 4 years, you've
noticed a very common trend. "Zeta Psi, this is Anthony". In October of
2006, Anthony Shibata replaced Chris Bond as Chapter Consultant. In June of
2007, I joined the office, aptly nicknamed "Dubs" as the second Anthony with
the initials AA. Then, Anthony Richardson came on to replace "Shiby" in June of
2009. Over the years, we even had an intern named Andrew (Drew Yeager) and an
Expansion Director Anatoly (which may or may not be Russian for Anthony).
We
figured they came close enough.
In about 4 year's time, IHQ
has increased our staff numbers, including adding a dedicated Canadian
consultant, bringing color to all staff communications. This has helped us
developed stronger bonds with our undergraduates and innovate our methods of
information delivery and capture. It has been an exciting time to be a member
of our staff, beginning with renovations of the IHQ office and house when I
first came on.
Since then, the house has been a home to any Zete working for
us, joining us for meetings, or just traveling through and visiting with us.
The highlight of that year was traveling to Oxford to add even more to Zeta
Psi's history of firsts. I've helped run three fantastic Conventions, in
Lincoln, Montreal, and Cleveland, each supported by a unique Elder chapter and
hosted by fun cities to explore. Brothers around the world have taken us into
their homes, introduced us to their families and close friends, given us meals
and places to stay, and show us some of the best times we could have asked for.
We've run in multiple Qdoba Relays, participated in diverse other philanthropy
and recruitment events, and gone to many intramural, college, and professional
sporting events with Brothers, friends, and families.
In short, young and old,
every Brother I've met on my travels has left me with another story to tell and
another friend to call whenever I'm in need (of help or just good times). There
is no more profound way to see and feel the power of our Brotherhood than
appearing on someone's doorstep and sleeping on their couch for days on end.
As Shibata left last year,
and Richardson leaves us this month, I will be moving on next month, bringing
in a new generation of IHQ staff. There may no longer be an Anthony on staff,
but IHQ will continue working to better Zeta Psi and unite us all in for many
generations to come. And all of us will look forward to seeing everyone in New
Orleans, and at many future Conventions. Always in Tau Kappa Phi, Anthony "Dubs" Abbate, Phi

A Dangerous Crowd

The Balmy Beach Club is
tucked away in a grove of trees on the shores of Lake Ontario in the quiet Beaches
area of East End Toronto. It's a neighbourhood spot where friends
gather to play sports and share stories while sipping a quiet beverage to relax
afterward.
On Friday, April 30th 2010 at
around midnight, at the end of a long, long evening, a haggard and exhausted
staff smoked their cigarettes outside the back door and commiserated about what
they had just been through.
How
did they come to be in this state in only a few short hours?
Zeta
Psi's Balmy Beach Assault started around 7:00 PM. A
phalanx of (mostly) tuxedoed Zetesand their beautifully dressed girlfriends and wives [May the two never meet -
Ed.] changed the quiet atmosphere and took over the joint in what was to be a
seminal event in Zete Fundraising
History.
The Canadian Foundation, led by Rob MacMullen - Alpha Mu '00 with tons of help from Theta Xi Zetes Paddy Gray '09, Ruben Vina-Garcia '08[Who very trepidatiously put his membership at the club on the line - Ed.],
Billy Stoutley '04 and a host of
others on the Committee, hosted the first ever Canadian Foundation Spring Ball. Yours truly spotted Brothers from Alpha Mu, Alpha Psi, Alpha Theta, Tau Theta, Theta Eta, Theta Phi and
Theta Xi. Most notably, Lorne Sobczyk - Chi Gamma '08 - and
his beautiful date flew in from Alberta
for the event.
In all, an amazing 96 Brothers and guests attended, monies were raised for the Zeta Psi Canadian Foundation and there
was a real sense that this event is the beginning of a renewed spirit of giving
within Zeta Psi.
None of this would have been possible
without the incredible collaborative work that was involved. Location planning
and logistics, online registration, invitations, phone blitzes, arm-twisting,
brow-beating and cajoling were a huge part of the mix. It just goes to show
that real success can be had by doing one simple thing: working hard and not
losing sight of the job at hand. Kudos to one and all!!

Networking: Brothers, our LinkedIn group, Zeta Psi Fraternity Alumni is growing by leaps and bounds. If you are interested in connecting
with other Zetes, this is the site to be!! As of this writing, we have well
over 1,000 Zetes in the Group - with more joining on a daily basis. Check out
the sub-groups too!!

Yours in

Pittsburgh Marathon
|
On Sunday, May 2nd -
five Nu Zetes from around the country gathered in Pittsburgh, PA for
a reunion and self inflicted torture.
Alums Marty Shaw '06, Jeff
Buzulencia '07, Trevor Ilse '08,
Ben Meck '09 and recent alum Nicholas Szugye '10 met in
Pittsburgh to run the Pittsburgh Marathon. The marathon attracts over 16,000
runners each year who attempt either the half-marathon (13.1 miles) or the full
marathon (26.2 miles) and this year, it caught the eye of several Nu Chapter
Zetes who shared a passion for running.
For some it was their first marathon
ever, while others had competed in marathons such as the Cleveland Marathon and
the Boston Marathon.

The five
runners had planned on the race for several months since signing up in November
2009. Although geographically dispersed in Boston, Pittsburgh, South
Carolina, New York, and Pittsburgh, they managed to train with each other using
tracking tools such as NikePlus and Garmin run recorders. Yet another
example of how the digital revolution has allowed Zetes to stay in better touch
even after graduation and relocation.
The weekend was full of
carb-loading parties and barbecues to culminate Sunday morning with the
big race. Cheered on by friends, family, and fellow Nu chapter alumni at nearly
every turn, the runners ran through the occasional downpour and drizzling rain
on a course that traversed Pittsburgh's many bridges and through many of its
unique neighborhoods.
Congratulations to the runners and their successful
completion of the race!
By the way, it's true, as all the runners found
out, that beer tastes much better after running for four hours.

Enjoy the summer, but remember... David Busacca
|
By the time
you get this issue, you'll be several weeks into a summer job; working on the
back deck for your parents; trying to line up some dates for the summer; or
taking that amazing trip. Enjoy it!
Presumably you
got out of school without wasting all your parents money; the chapter is in
reasonably good shape; and, you are looking forward to another productive year.
Some of the
things you need to remember NOW so that things are in place for September: -
That year
end report is going to be critical this year since it will be the initial basis
upon which your insurance payments will be calculated. If you haven't
provided your portion (or ensured that it has been submitted to IHQ), all the
brothers may be paying more next semester than you need to be paying.
-
You never
stop rushing! Your chapter should be prepared to hit the ground running
in September...such as that's helping incoming freshmen into dorms (and feeling
out guys to invite up when rush is open or make a point of contacting on campus
until then). If you can get a list from school of students from your
area, particularly your high school that are going to U next year, never hurts
to call the guy, welcome him to school, tell him you're a Zete and he should
stop buy some time. The worst that happens is he's not a guy that gets a
bid; but potentially you may get a jump on one of the best pledges in the
upcoming class!
-
Make sure
you and your brothers have your finances in place. If you're an officer,
particularly Gamma, and there are financial issues with your chapter, talk to
IHQ NOW---not 6 months after the fact. They can help and there will be
much less angst next semester when you're called before Discipline!
-
Most
importantly, get to New Orleans with every brother you can! The Elders
and adults in your life seldom implore you to do the fun thing!
This is one of those times.
There will be
hundreds of brothers, Elders, guests staying at the Royal Sonesta for one of
the best conventions you'll ever see. Grab some brothers and make a road
trip out of it. But take advantage of all the incentives and help IHQ
provides to actives to be able to attend this convention. Go to the LTI's...they
really are good and helpful; attend the social events and make some new friends
and contacts; and "cap" off your summer with an incredible time with your
brothers!
I'll be
bricked up behind closed doors for most of it, but the Board does appear
occasionally in public. We like jambalaya as well as anyone! But if
you have anything to say about your fraternity, this is also a good time to do
that. You'll never get as many guys responsible for what happens around
here in one place again!
Enjoy your
summer; plan for next semester; and visit New Orleans!
Always in Tau Kappa Phi, David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII |

service. We do not award these every year, and when we do award them, it
is limited to one or two per year.
The Henry Elliot Volunteer of the Year Award This award is given out for
volunteer service to Zeta Psi, for activities and/or actions during the past
"convention year." We give out only one of these per year. The Alumni Advisor of the Year An
award given to an Alumni Advisor. It is an attempt to recognize our many
alumni volunteers who devote many hours to the Undergraduate chapters. We
only award one per year. This award may be presented to a Non Zeta Psi working
with one of our chapters. The James H. McLaughlin Interfraternity Service Award This
award is given to someone who has made numerous contributions to the Fraternity
world. This award does not have to be given out every year and both Brothers of
Zeta Psi and non-brothers are eligible for this award. Prior winners have been
faculty advisors, Greek advisors, and leaders of other fraternities. The James Carey Leadership Award Given
for Outstanding Leadership, either in the chapter, the school, Zeta Psi, or the
community. All Brothers of Zeta Psi are eligible. We give out only ONE of
these per year. The John Birchfield Communications Award As
