Dave's Desk - The Year is Closing

Dave Hunter As we're coming to the close of another school year we all need to be vigilant in keeping aware of the vital areas that could bring harm to Zeta Psi.  Active members, don't let your guard down on risk management concerns with end of year function and spring initiations.  Alumni members, please visit the chapter, inspect your property if applicable, meet with officers to review end-of-year activities.

As summer approaches plans need to be made for moving, for closing or renting properties, and for repairs. Let's not let down our guard as things slow down!

Congratulations

I'd like to congratulate our new brothers at both the Theta Psi Chapter at Queen's and Delta Chi Chapter at American.  Well done guys.  I'd also like to thank the Alpha Psi Chapter, the Phi Epsilon Chapter, The DC Elder Association, and to all the Zetes that helped make these two new chapters happen.

Alpha Theta Closes

I am sad to report that this month Zeta Psi, in concurrence with the Alpha Theta Elder Association, closed the Alpha Theta Chapter at Waterloo University. The chapter had gone through a three year decline in membership and rising debt. Zeta Psi needs an active chapter at Waterloo and we'll make plans to reactivate the chapter in the next few years.

Sincerely in Tau Kappa Phi,

T.K.Phi, Dave Hunter, IA '80 (email me)

Two Additions to the Circle!
Dave Hunter

This past month Zeta Psi added two active chapters to the Circle of Zeta Psi

Queens Charter
Theta Psi Chapter Chartering

Theta Psi Chapter
- Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario
On March 20, 2010 our Phi Alpha David Busacca, Tau Delta '73, handed a charter to the members of the Theta Psi Chapter at Queen's University at an installation banquet held in downtown Montreal. Fraternities are a new entity at Queen's and Zeta Psi is excited to introduce Greeks to this campus. Our new members are excited about the future and look to growth to a dominant chapter in Canada!

Delta Chi Chapter - American University, Washington, D.C.
On April 17, 2010 Dave Busacca again had the privilege of handing out a charter to a new active chapter, this one to the Delta Chi Chapter at American University, at the DC Elder Banquet held in Alexandria, VA. Zeta Psi established a chapter at American in 1969, but it was short-lived. Our new group has started strong and is poised to excel going forward with plans for a strong recruitment effort and full recognition by the campus. Many thanks go to the DC Elders for driving this effort to increase Zeta Psi's presence in the U.S. Capitol City.

AU Charter 1
David Busacca, Phi Alpha and Tau Delta '73, and Jay Rothberg, former Phi Alpha and Delta Chi '69 from their first run.

AU Charter 2
Dave and Jay joined by Matt Carnovale, undergraduate Phi of the reactivated Delta Chi chapter, class of 2012

AU Charter 3
Dave, Jay, Matt, and the new Delta Chi brothers with their charter.  All joined by Jeremy Snyder, Delta Chi chapter advisor from Phi Epsilon '00.

And of course, "Laissez les bon temps rouler!"

Don't be Dull!!
Sim Brigden
WSFP bannerThat's my motto. I came up with it many years ago but it can be hard to live by.

The reason to bring it up is that, in our travels we meet a lot of folks (and Brothers) from all over the place. Here are a few things about meeting people which I'd like to pass on.

First of all, except for a blessed few of you, most of us have a hell of a time remembering names and faces. It's kind of like being colour blind [Bloody Canadians and their spelling - Ed.] - there's nothing you can do about it so, occasionally, you can make the most outrageous gaffes by mixing someone up with someone else. Naturally we all get embarrassed and are constantly working on this to try and improve. Here are some tips:

First of all, the basics: I'm sure that 90% of you already do the following - remind them of YOUR name! "Hi, I'm Sim Brigdenand I'm damngladtameetcha!!" Ask them their name!(Doug Donaldson Theta '72 meets zillions of Zetes all the time. He is never embarrassed to ask a guy his name.) Always shake hands(which we have a particular reason to do), look the person in the eyewhen you do it and say their name back to them. Try to associate them with something and silently repeat their name in your head 10 times along with the association.

Example: Maybe you meet a guy named Jerry and he has red hair. You might say to yourself 10 times: "Jerry is a commie [= red, get it? - Ed.], Jerry is a commie etc. etc."

Of course, that's when it all goes wrong - the next time you meet him you end up blurting out: "How are you, Commie?!!"

So, to fix that, try to get enough info about the guy that you can tell a story about him. If there is one thing that people like, it's hearing about themselves in an anecdote. Here's one way:

If you are in a gathering, WORK THE ROOM. Don't just talk with the same old crowd. Make a point at EVERY party and function you go to try to meet EVERY person at that function. Yes, it's a little scary at first but it's amazing how easy it is once you try it. Moreover, you start to feel the interconnectedness of the entire function. Best of all, it gives you stories about people to tell back to them: "So, Jerry, I hear that you are going to be spending two weeks with those tree-huggers on the West Coast - tell me what you're doing out there." - Maybe he has a story about crashing his bike into a tree in Yosemite. The next time you see him, you not only know more about him, but you also have something to talk about: "Has your cycling improved or are the trees still jumping out at you, Jerry??!!"

From there, you can collect stories and anecdotes about people and, in the end, be less dull!

Remember, if you show that you are truly interested in others and don't just talk about yourself, they'll respond to you and remember you.

Lastly, for you Actives out there, for gosh sakes, put down your cell phones, game consoles, girlfriends and remotes, get up, shake hands and introduce yourself when an Elder walks in the room. If you always make Elders feel welcome, they will be more $upportive of your chapter!

Later in the day, area Zetes initiated American Universityundergrads as part of their week-long re-chartering celebration. Friday, April 16th, Zetes and Washington Scholar alum gathered to honor this spring's scholars' graduation from the WSFP. Then Saturday, April 17th, over 200 Zetes, dates and families assembled in black-tie for the DC Elders' 6th Annual Spring Banquet, the (re-)Chartering Celebration for the Delta Chi chapter at American University, and the Gamma Epsilon Chapter's 1st Founders' Day - Click HEREfor more details.

New Insurance Program
David Busacca
Dave Busacca Yeah, yeah....give it a rest!  I know.  But since it is fast approaching finals and end of semester, then summer....there are many issues you need to know before you leave for the year.

Beginning with your next semester billing (Sept-Oct 2010), the new insurance standards will be in effect. For budget planning purposes your best estimate will be this year's per man cost. But we will be applying all the new standards and the opportunities for discounts are there. Application will depend on the chapter providing the necessary information to IHQ in their Year End Report.

Below is a list of the categories and a brief explanation for your information:

Housed/Unhoused A physical structure (owned by University, Elders, rented) that is identified as "Zeta Psi" which is predominately inhabited by brothers and at which social/chapter events may occur.

Claims Number and severity of insurance claims in the last 5 years (IHQ will have this information.

Alcohol EDU Completed by minimum number of active/pledges

GPA  Overall Chapter and Pledge class compared to University All Men averages

Chapter Awards at immediate prior Convention

Attendance  At Convention/LTIs (total number); Phi Leadership Conference

Year End Report Properly completed and submitted on time

Each category affects your ultimate per man insurance cost, and, consequently, your annual insurance billing. Once issued, the billing rate will not be changed that year so it is imperative that you provide all the necessary information timely(that's why there's a discount for getting all the information in with your Year End Report).

By next month there will be a "checklist" available on the Web Site which will allow you to provide all this information in one format. Until then, save your chapter and brothers some money by getting this data to IHQ ASAP. If you have any questions, you may contact me or IHQ.

I strongly urge each chapter to get on this now, complete before you leave school for the summer if you want to reduce your insurance bill this upcoming year.

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII
