Dave's Desk - Calling All Alumni
Zeta Psi has
embarked on a much needed effort to update our membership database. We
are missing too much vital information on our members. This impacts our
ability to support our mission - By providing
support and an environment for social learning at school, we aim to,
"...turn out into the world self-respecting, original-thinking,
self-controlled, purposeful gentlemen."
Our
current effort is two-fold:
1) work with local alumni groups to compare and
share data and
2) to reach out to key classmates and fill in our voids.
You can help!
We need the contact information you have for your fellow
Zetes. We'll integrate missing and inaccurate information into our
database and we'll coordinate with local alumni groups so we all have the same
info. If we can succeed in this effort we will become a far better
organization. Please help!
Sincerely in Tau Kappa Phi,
T.K.Phi, Dave Hunter, IA '80 (email me)

From Bad to Baaaad!
Sim Brigden

You know
how, when you screw up, it sometimes goes from bad to worse? Last month I wrote
to thank Greg McElroy '70 for his marvelous service on the Board of
Zeta Psi. Well, I screwed up my facts and Greg got a whole bunch of
phone calls and emails ... Apologies, Greg.
Now, here's
how it got worse: I then had to spend nearly an hour in a car driving Greg
and Bobbi McElroy and Doug Donaldson from HQ (Pearl River) to
Nu Sigma's Chartering Banquet*. By the time we got there, I had the
story pretty damned straight - believe you me!! Greg attended his first
Board meeting in 1972 [During NIXON!! - Ed.] and January was his last Mid-winter
Board meeting and his 73rd or 74th. The Board swan song
for Greg will occur this summer in New Orleans...
Which brings
us to the point of this missive: Many of you are young guys who struggle to
plan. Lots of you are bon-vivants who refuse to plan. Some of you are A-type,
organized individuals who are keen to leverage every opportunity you can. Well,
for that last group, here are two opportunities:
Gentlemen,
this August 18-22, 2010, we are holding our 163rd Annual Convention in New Orleans. We are going to where the mighty Mississippi
wraps its curls and coils around the home of the Superbowl Champions.
This is the place of pirates and polecats. Of Cajuns and Katrina.
Of jazz and jambalaya. Of rebirth and above ground burial, Voodoo,
crawdads... but most of all, there will be Zetes creating their very own
new legends in the Big Easy. This is going to be baaad!
LinkedIn
- Brothers,
our LinkedIn group - Zeta
Psi Fraternity Alumni - is growing prodigiously. This is a great way to
connect with other Zetes. Make sure to request to join and I'll get you
added to the group - you won't believe who's there so, check it out and start
networking!
*Nu Sigma
did a marvelous job of putting on a great Chartering Banquet - only
seven years after the blessed event!! - read about it elsewhere in UpZete
- kudos to the Active and Elder Brothers for such a great success!!

NYC RAC Ben Meck & Anthony Abbate

The NYC Regional Alumni Club (NYC
RAC) of Zeta Psi exists to unite elders and actives members of Zeta Psi in the
NYC area or from the NYC area through events held throughout the year.
December's holiday party united alumni from over a dozen chapters and was an
eventful evening at the Night Hotel.
This month, the NYC RAC has organized a happy hour at Galway Hooker on Wednesday,
March 24th from 7-9pm. The evening is open to all Zetes - all are invited
to attend who are in the New York City area. The beer selection is
extensive and Zeta Psi has a private back room reserved. We hope to see
many of you there!
Please click here to RSVP for the
event so we can have proper space for the attendees.
Also, you can use the same link
above to sign up for the NYC RAC mailing list to receive emails with details of
our upcoming events and this year's RAC Calendar. All Zetes are welcome
to join or unsubscribe from the list at any point to remain informed about
upcoming events.
All are welcome, the attire is
post-work or casual, and your first drink is on Zeta Psi!

DC Elders
Mark Williams
|
Living and
working in our nation's capitol always offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy
some Zete fellowship, and is an especially exciting time to be a Zete in
DC.
In February,
the Georgetown actives swept their way to their second event win in the DC
Elders Capitol Cup series with a dominating performance in dodgeball.
With this win, the Gamma Epsilon brothers have the inside track to the first
ever season championship in the Capitol Cup - but first they'll have to make a
good showing at the last event of the season: Kickball! Check out all the dodgeball pictures and recap.
April will
be a busy month for DC area Zetes. First we'll continue our monthly
tradition of First Tuesday Happy Hours - this month at Russia House on April 6th.
Then the actives and elders will clash in the final Capitol Cup event of the
season on the kickball fields of Maryland on April 10th. All
of this will be a prelude the big event: the DC Elders' 6th Annual Black Tie Banquet and Gamma Epsilon 1st Founders' Day Celebration on April 17th in Alexandria, VA. Tickets are
going fast, and we

James "Jim" Garvey
On Monday, February 22, 2010.
He was born Aug. 24, 1951,
he was the son of Dorothy Cloonan Garvey and the late James E. Garvey.
Originally from Swissvale, he attended St. Anselm Catholic School. He had a
passion for reading, collecting comic books, movie memorabilia and friends. He
graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Criminology.
He was an
active and well liked brother in Zeta Psi.
His criminology degree led him
to counseling inmates and later troubled youth. Tall and agile, he played
volleyball in the human services volleyball league. He started his own business
specializing in all forms of collectibles. Jim moved to Las Vegas in his later
adult life where he met his surviving wife, Kathleen. Jim moved to Tennessee
and lived there until his death. Jim is survived by his mother, Dorothy and two
sisters, Arlene Rocchini and Mary Garvey and three brothers, Terrence, Mark and
Dennis.
We loved him and will miss him.

IT'S A BABY BOY! HE'S GRADUATING FROM COLLEGE! David Busacca
|
It's a baby
boy! He's graduating from college!
Phrases many
of us long to hear throughout our lives. And, as importantly, an acknowledgment of renewal, development, and maturity.
It occurs to
me that in some ways this spring at Zeta Psi mirrors that experience somewhat.
We expect to
expand our Canadian dominance by chartering a new group at Queens University in
Montreal; in April, a new charter at American University in Washington
DC. Now for an "artificial" family this is as close to birth any of us
men are going to have!
While each
freshmen class holds the adventure of renewal of the chapter, it is the
installation of a new (or reactivation of an old) chapter that really "adds" to
our "family" across the world.
Later, in
June, our Theta Chapter at University of Connecticut will celebrate its 50 year
anniversary---sort of "middle age" for us. And unfortunately, there are
the "deaths" in the family as a chapter closes for whatever reasons. The
big advantage this family has is that our members can live forever! They can
even come back from the dead!
Now I don't
want to torture this metaphor too much, but in many ways we do function as a
family. Both Elders and actives at a local chapter, very much operating
in the way an "older brother" does for a younger (NIB) sibling and as a parent,
or favorite uncle, guides, informs and helps make "mid-course" corrections for
those younger.
What I do
like about this analogy is the underlying motivational aspects. Family
members, ideally, deal with each other from love. We tolerate idiocy
sometimes; allow "learning" mistakes; are always there unconditionally in times
of stress; and, hopefully, ensure funds are there to keep the family
afloat.
I think it's
beneficial for us to sometimes step back from our fraternity experiences and
look at the "big" picture. It is not just about "us"--- the class of '84;
the Elder Board; the undergraduate Supreme Council; the Grand Chapter.
Certainly we have to pay particular attention to the issues most current and
immediate to our personal well being. But it cannot end there.
The founding
brothers of the American University Chapter should sit down and talk with their
counterparts at Theta. They will find similar motivations; similar
lessons extracted from the experience; similar long term objectives, changing
over time as the chapter "matures".
We have much
more in common among our actives, Elders, chapters, IHQ, Grand Chapter than we
realize sometimes. When you focus on that, it helps to put things in
perspective when you step back and wonder what it is you should do in this
particular circumstance.
I hope our
Washington area chapters become a closely knit mutually supporting group that
can share similar experiences. I know some of our newer chapters in
Toronto benefited from contact from some of their newer counterparts, as well
as from Canada's oldest chapter.
Sometimes
you want to talk to Uncle Bob....sometimes you want to talk to your big bro...but
you know it will all get covered.
Isn't family
great!?
