Dave's Desk - Alumni Unite!
As announced in previous issues, Zeta Psi is concentrating on building
our alumni base. The effort is two-fold.
First, every strong
chapter in Zeta Psi has a strong alumni organization. If we can
strengthen alumni groups it can only help improve our chapters, which can only
help improve our organization.
Second, we need strong local alumni
involvement to help mentor and educate our undergraduate members to help them
succeed in life. One-on-one contact is so valuable to increasing the
college experience and helping provide the best educational platform for a
success life.
All of you can help by being involved.
Please contact
me to learn more.
Sincerely in Tau Kappa Phi,
T.K.Phi, Dave Hunter, IA '80 (email me)

Zete Senator!
Jason Murphy |
Whatever our politics, we can all be proud to have a Zete Senator.
While it's hard for anyone to have missed the fact that Scott Brown was recently elected to the United States Senate, what many Zetes may have missed is that Senator Brown is an alumnus of our Kappa Chapter at Tufts University.
Many brothers - including myself - proudly contributed time and treasure to Senator Brown's campaign effort; it's not often that we are able to support someone seeking office who also happens to be a brother.
Senator Brown certainly developed his leadership skills through many means - his Zeta Psi membership, his co-captaincy of the Tufts basketball team, previous service as an elected member of the Massachusetts legislature, and perhaps most importantly, as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Massachusetts National Guard.
Helping men hone their leadership skills is an important part of the Zeta Psi Fraternity - whether through our Capozzoli Leadership Training Institute, the Washington Scholars, Wall Street Scholars, or simply through leadership and management experience gained at the chapter level.
Scott Brown serves as a great example of a man who took advantage of numerous leadership opportunities afforded to him, including through Zeta Psi, and who as a result is now serving as a United States Senator from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts - and for that I send my heartfelt congratulations! |
Zete Supports Haitian Relief! |
Stephen Joost, Tulane '84, is a founding partner of Firehouse Subs located in the southeastern United States.
He and his partners recently donated 86,600 pounds of dry rice & beans to Hope for Haiti, Inc. The food left on two, 40' containers and headed to Miami where it was flown to Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
This amount of food will produce around 350,000 hot meals!
We tip our hats to Brother Stephen for a job well done! |

Gemme Five!!!
Sim Brigden
|
This past January, at the closing of the winter meeting
of the Board of Directors, Greg McElroy tearfully said his last
words as he stepped down as a member of
the Board. This was the 47th
Board meeting that Greg has
attended. [I'm sure that Greg's hair
would still be black were it not for the likes of you and some of your
confederates out there! - Ed.] Greg
has infused every aspect of Zeta Psi
with his presence and taken on almost every role in the process. Don't get me
wrong, he will still continue to be involved on other levels. That's because Greg knows more Zetes and more about Zeta
Psi than anyone I know.
But, what does this change mean to you and how does it
affect you? Well, the answer is simple: there is gap to fill - a big one. Given
Greg's tremendous presence, no one
person can be expected to fill it. The only way to move forward is for each and
every one of us to step up by being a better Zete.
Let's think about that. What does being a better Zete mean to you? For me, it boils down
to asking myself those tough, deep questions. Do I like who I am? Am I truly
comfortable with where I am headed? Are there people I should be reaching out
to? Did I do my very best today? [You
mean, did you do passably better than your usual mediocrity that passes off as
'effort'?! - Ed.] More importantly, what am I going to do about it?
Greg is
a great motivator. I am always learning from him. So, in that spirit, it's time
to turn around and ask you for help. I'm asking you for one
simple thing: please give Zeta Psi five
more minutes a month.
Five
minutes. That's all.
Write a cheque, phone another Zete, make a commitment to an Active,
email me contact info of a 'lost' Zete, development@zetapsi.org, recruit a new Zete. Floss your teeth.
If we all do this, Zeta Psi will be the very best Fraternity
in all of Greek life. Together,
let's reach for the brass ring.
Yours in
TKф,
Sim Brigden

GREAT IDEAS David Busacca
|
"If ideas are like cords of word, we
know what we must do with the woodpile...use it freely and judiciously as it was
generously provided as undergraduates;
leave it 'higher' when we leave for the next group."
New, "old" Fractured metaphor by Phi Alpha
Look out! Now I'm making up my own phrases!
As the senior leadership of Zeta Psi
Fraternity and Foundation, the officers and Board members are the guys
responsible to make sure the place "works".
We just held our Mid Winter Board meeting and I believe it provides some
answers and, as always, more questions.
In any organization, the top guys
are exposed to more detail; have much broader knowledge of issues, both
beneficial and competing; generally have greater experience and history than
the average Joe. That is why sometimes
"Joe" looks at some of those decisions and asks "what planet was he from?" Or, at least, "If they only listened to me, I
could have solved that problem."
And while these other, overriding
factors often make the "simple" solution more complex or costly than it appears,
sometimes Joe is right!
At the recent Phi Conference last
month, I committed to present the collective recommendations and ideas of the
groups' Break Out sessions to the Board.
And, I have done that.
I've urged our Boards, and IHQ staff
to give serious looks at some of those recommendations/observations. Of course, some are "off the hook" (fund Road
Trips); some probably illegal or legally suspect (allowing unfettered access to
our website for publishing certain of our material or from chapters). But many are very good ideas. And, even more importantly, they provide a
look into what undergraduates leaders perceive as
important/significant/helpful/informative information. Generally, it's a good idea to listen to the
customer!
But frankly, the enormous collective
value of our organizations' membership's input is seldom heard. It is not (exclusively) a factor of insiders
"it didn't come from us". Often, it
doesn't come from anyone ELSE!
The Phi Conference was an excellent
opportunity to communicate some of those ideas; we also tried a periodic Phi
conference call to update and solicit info, with little to no real success.
You can't complain about who gets
elected (or how they govern) if you never go to the ballot box.
I urge all of you ---undergraduates
and Elders--- to feel free about forwarding questions or ideas. There are mechanisms on our website, email,
Facebook, LinkedIn....about the only thing we don't do is come to the chapter
Thursday evening and conduct a "bitch" session!
If you are truly committed to this
fraternity, as I believe most of us are, then you need to provide your input
and thoughts. There have been many major
issues we have discussed here over the months...Insurance reform, Expansion,
Ideal Chapter, Alumni Development, etc.
These issues need full discourse to develop into the best options for
our fraternity. And that requires each
of you, not the twenty guys in a board room for two days.
If you feel passionately about your
fraternity and its operation, take the time to let us know.
Ultimately, you shouldn't complain
if you make no effort to be part of the solution. Remember, everyone gets the politicians they
deserve!
Always in Tau Kappa Phi, David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII |
