Dave's Desk - New Year

Dave Hunter Well, 2009 has come to a close.  I think we can say that fall of 2009 was a good semester for Zeta Psi.  We are now at 41 active chapters with the reactivation of the Psi Epsilon Chapter at Dartmouth.  Our target of 700 initiates looks achievable with 290 initiated this fall, another 140 set for initiation in early spring, and we expect our chapters to recruit another 290 this spring.  Our four colonies are on track for late spring installations.  Another positive note is Zeta Psi has not had any risk management issues this fall.  The one major area of concern is our chapter accounts receivable.  16 of our chapters are in serious trouble.  We must solve this major deficiency.  Along those lines Zeta Psi is looking to begin billing chapters through the Omega Financial billing system.

The Zeta Psi Educational Foundation issued $30,000 of scholarships this fall.  Congratulations to the deserving students receiving scholarships.  The foundation also held four Leadership Training Institutes with approximately 280 students attending.  Donations are coming into the foundation.  Thank you to those of you who have made a gift to Zeta Psi.  The foundation is a positive force in improving the lives out our students and I encourage all of you to consider a gift to Zeta Psi.

We'll put it to good use!

To all reading these words I wish each of you a great 2010!

Sincerely in Tau Kappa Phi,

T.K.Phi, Dave Hunter, IA '80 (email me)

Washington Scholars Fellowship Program
Fernando Cortes
WSFP banner As 2010 starts, I'm happy to report that the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program has had another successful year and our network in the nation's capital continues to grow in size and influence.   Last month we graduated three new scholars in a well-attended ceremony for what was the last graduation of the calendar year.  In its first year a decade ago, the program began with a class of one scholar; this year, we graduated over thirty scholars that included Zetes from a variety of chapters here at home and abroad, women from some of the best schools in the nation and veterans that have proudly served our country.

Under the leadership of my predecessor, Chris Bond, we worked to not only maintain but also deepen the long-standing relationships with internship hosts that have been with us for the better part of the decade.  We've also added new internship hosts to our lists to broaden the appeal of the program to future applicants with the understanding that applicants have different interests within the public policy arena.

2009_WSFP_Summer_ScholarsThe success of the program is in part due to everyone who has been involved in prior years: former scholars, former management team members, and members of Future Leaders for America board who have provided a consistent vision under Admiral James Carey and Brian McManus

Additionally, the success of the program is a testament to the much appreciated financial support the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation continues to provide.  Many of you, like the Foundation, have supported the program financially throughout the years, made time in your busy schedules to mentor scholars, and even shared your offices as internship hosts.  For that, a generation of future leaders will forever be grateful.  It is my hope that those of you who are already involved will continue to be a part of the program in the coming years.  For those looking to get involved in any capacity, please email me at fcortes@washingtonscholars.org.  As it has been said, "With many hands, the burden is light."

Together, we can bring the Washington Scholars Fellowship program to new heights and make the impact on scholars even more profound.

It is my pleasure to inform you that we are now accepting applications for the summer 2010 term.  The application deadline is January 18, 2010 and applicants can download an application by visiting our website at www.washingtonscholars.org.  Feel free to forward this information to brothers, family and friends so that they may take advantage of this career-enhancing opportunity.

Again thank you for support.

WSS New Logo The Wall Street Scholars Program has posted the application to apply for a position in the Summer 2010 class.  Zeta Psi's Wall Street Scholars Program is dedicated to placing talented undergraduates in premier internship programs in the New York area.

An internship in this capacity provides students with invaluable knowledge and skills in their field and access to a vast network of professional contacts. New York City is one of the most exciting cities in the world and is home to many Zeta Psi professionals. Scholars must demonstrate motivation, relevant past experience and interests, and a desire to excel in the internship position. Positions range from a variety of companies and will accept numerous majors and concentrations, ranging from Communications to Pre-law to Media Relations to Marketing to Investment Banking and so on.

The Wall Street Scholars Program will prepare the Summer 2010 scholars for their internship experience in New York, provide valuable skills and advice from experienced professionals, and plan networking opportunities for scholars to grow their network of Zeta Psi brothers in the New York area.

The application can be found on the Zeta Psi Wall Street Scholars website, http://www.zetapsi.org/wss and can be filled out and submitted online, or downloaded and submitted, along with a current resume. The application deadline is March 1, 2010.  All materials must be submitted at that point.  For descriptions on the companies participating in the Wall Street Scholars Program for Summer 2010 and more about internship responsibilities, visit the website.

If you have independently secured an internship in the New York City area, you can apply using the same application below to become a part of the Wall Street Scholar program.

Bang The Drums!
Sim Brigden
WSFP banner Dear Brothers,

Thanks to the gracious support of Brother Alan Rice AB '50, I have been engaged as your new Director, Alumni Development.

Back when I was Elder Phi in Toronto, I realized that the reason any Chapter does well is its spirit. As the Brothers in Toronto will attest, Elder Phi Lawerence "Moose" Hourihan and his team focus on making every event, like Commemoration 2009, special by encouraging Brothers young and old to attend. The result is life-long camaraderie. [Not to mention some nasty head-aches - Ed.] I propose to re-infuse that spirit into the entire Fraternity.

Long ago, humans realized that it does not take much to amuse the male of the species. As an old math teacher once admonished me: "Brigden, small things amuse small minds!!"  Tragically, he was quite prophetic about more than just my intellect...

That notwithstanding, we're up to our eyeballs in stress. You know that you need to make time to relax and reflect. What better way for a man to appreciate your accomplishments than to chew the cud with your chums?

My question to you is: Hey!! Why aren't you making it happen?? Do you want to get your old gang together? Are you in another town for a bit and want a chance to see some long-lost friends or make new ones? Don't know where to start? The answer is staring you in the face: Zeta Psi!

What better group of ready-made reprobates, ne'er-do-wells, ahem, friends would you want? Email me, I'll look 'em up and put you in touch. Hold Ctl when you click the link: development@zetapsi.org

In return, I'm going to ask something of you: Zetes are spread all over the planet. Many are 'lost' and I need their contact info.

Please email me contact information for TWO (2) brothers* you know with new particulars. If all of you do it, and we all decide to get together at the Convention this summer in New Orleans, we might never have to go back to our 'real' lives again!!

*Just attach a v-card or drop an Outlook contact on the email. Please include first and last, Chapter, email and cell. Home address, grad year, year joined and other numbers would be great too.

If I don't see you before then, I'll be expecting to see you in New Orleans!

Yours in TKф,
Sim Brigden

Membership Development - 3rd Annual Kirby Leadership Conference a Success!
Alan R. van den Arend
From January 8th - 10th officers from 32 Active Chapters and 3 Colonies gathered for the 3rd annual Kirby Future Leaders Conference, hosted by the Tau Chapter at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.  The conference, funded generously by the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation, seeks to bring together Presidents from all the Active Chapters to discuss issues important to the Fraternity at large and to hone leadership and organizational management skills.

The conference began with a meet-and-greet Friday evening over a buffet-style dinner, followed by a course in wine tasting administered by Brother Stephen Halperin.  Saturday was spent primarily in workshops discussing issues important to the further development of services offered to Chapters by IHQ.  Brother Gary Webster gave a presentation on the significance of mentoring and its place in our Fraternity.  Brothers Fernando Cortes from Washington Scholars, Ben Meck from Wall Street Scholars and Tyler Boisvert from ZeteKids also spoke briefly about their organizations and the services that they offer.  Saturday's schedule ended with a series of breakout sessions discussing important elements of Chapter development (Facilitating Change, Budgeting, Philanthropy) and a review of our Ritual, followed by dinner.

Sunday began with a presentation from our most worthy Phi Alpha David Busacca and our Executive Director David Hunter on the roles and responsibilities of the Phi in the Chapter and a brief discussion about our insurance policy.  Brother Anthony Shibata then gave a talk on proper media relations.  The conference ended with courses on resume building, organizational development, and legal liabilities.

A great thanks goes out to all of our Active participants and Elder volunteers, without whom this conference would not have been such a success.

NEW YEAR/MID-YEAR
Dave Busacca We begin a new year, but for Zeta Psi, it's sort of "mid-year".  We are fiscal year is June-May and we operate most of our fraternity activity in sync with academic schedules.

As many of our undergraduates return from holiday and begin a final semester of University, a lot of things are poised for action here.

As we have for a number of years, January sees our Phi Leadership Conference which is held at Tau Chapter, Lafayette College.  I again attended this year (and again bored the undergrads a couple times).  But I do believe this is one of the most important things we do.

By informing, updating, getting feedback and instructing the undergraduate leaders of our chapters, this is the opportunity to make the most impact on our chapters' well being and the future of the fraternity.

Make no mistake about it...this place operates for the undergraduate.  ALL of the operations, Elder efforts and programs, donations, staff and volunteer effort ultimately focus on the undergraduate chapter.  Frankly, there's little real reason for us continue if there are not undergraduate chapters.

Now, certainly many of the philanthropic activities help other than undergraduate Zetes and could continue to do so; even the Elder activity could occur purely as a social interaction effort like many University or association organizations do.

But what really drives all of us is the undergraduate experience.  It meant different things to different guys, but ultimately, it made sufficient impact on our personality, psyche, social standards, friendships, affinity associations and values that we continue to support it.  Why?  Because ultimately we believe that what we got "out of Zeta Psi" is so unique and valuable, we want to ensure other young men have that same opportunity.

Now, I have to admit, there are many times when, as an Elder, volunteer, Board Member, Phi Alpha, I see things I don't like.  At best, simple errors of youth and maturity that hopefully we can influence to improve; at worst, a repudiation of all the values I took from my Zeta Psi experience.  Luckily, the latter is infrequent because it is so demoralizing.

Notwithstanding all the above, I, and hundreds of other Elders, continue our efforts because we want to give back, to make a difference in YOUR lives through the fraternal process.  Something that, admittedly, working with a group of 18-22 year olds is often frustrating!

Many times, as actives, you may not agree or like the actions taken or imposed.  Hopefully in the future you will see the wisdom of those actions, or at least, the good faith in which they were exercised.

Since this is a new semester, a new calendar year, a new decade, it doesn't hurt to put things in simple perspective.  We're all in this together...actives cannot succeed without Elder support and IHQ organization...it is a continuing and ongoing process.  We all need to remember that and embrace what each of us can do to make Zeta Psi just somewhat better for us being a part of it, as each of us have the opportunity to be somewhat better for having experienced it.

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII
