Dave's Desk - Commemoration at Theta Xi

Dave Hunter On November 7th I had the privilege of attending the Commemoration Dinner hosted by the Theta Xi Elders in Toronto.  This was the eighth time I've been able to attend this particular dinner that honors fallen Theta Xi Zetes.  130 Zetes attended the dinner itself, a lavish black-tie affair at the exclusive York Club just down the street from the Theta Xi Chapter House.  Another 70 or so Zetes stayed at the house and the entire group of Zetes, ranging from Class of 43 to Class of 13, mingled together until the wee hours.

This event is one of the finest examples of Zete camaraderie in all of Zeta Psi.  You certainly feel the bond when in attendance.

Many chapters and many alumni associations have annual banquets or gatherings.  These events really bring together all that is good about Zeta Psi.  We speak of the life-long bonds, the leadership, the friendships, the mentoring, and the life experiences.  It is at events that have Zetes from across the generations that our best values and purposes stand out.

Let's keep up the good work!

2009 Debutant Ball In Washington, DC
RADM [Ret.] James J. Carey
Alpha Theta Brothers in Tau Kappa Phi,

Well, another year and another Debutante Ball behind us, with a growing participation and influence by Zeta Psi Elders and our Washington Scholars Grads here in the nation's capitol city, and even including some of the undergrads from the DC area ZETE chapters.

We've taken the photos from the event that were taken by those at our tables and put them into Photo Album format [actually, Allie Key, wife of DC Elders Exec. VP MacLane Key did it, so SPECIAL THANKS to Allie for all she does for Zeta Psi "Inside the Beltway"], so everyone can see ALL the photos that we have from the event by clicking on the URL listed below.

We know not everyone is interested in "matters debutante", but our purpose with these photos is to show a larger picture and a greater involvement by showing the extent and degree of Zeta Psi involvement in this prestigious event with the formal social structure in our nation's capitol city.  Our Zete involvement and inclusion grows with each passing year, as does the involvement of our brother Zetes that are Washington Scholars Grads----- and thus this is MUCH MORE about Zeta Psi and Zeta Psi's growing role in Washington, DC than it is about debutantes.

Take a look at these photos and I think you will see what I mean.

NO GOOD DEED GOES UNPUNISHED...
Dave Busacca (Part old cliché and part insurance....you get a double whammy this month!)

One of our chapters was recently suspended by their university, and will be before Discipline by the time this is read.  I would expect that Discipline and the Board will suspend the charter.

There are a number of reasons, but one of the charges is Hazing, as evidenced by requirements that pledges drive brothers as and when requested.   I understand some chapters have instituted "designated driver" programs in their chapters when brothers are at a bar, etc.  All together, sounds like a good, positive effort?

To be clear, any requirement imposed only on the pledges has the potential to be hazing.  Mandatory study hours presumably would not be; however, mandatory clean ups, work assignments, forced participation could be.  It always depends on circumstances.

In this chapter's case, these "driving assignments" were at will....any time a brother wanted a ride, day or night, and could be over substantial distance, e.g. 4 hour drive home and back.  Additionally, some of the other (prohibited but required) hazing resulted in substantial sleep deprivation.  This led University officials to conclude the actions were excessive and, combined with other aspects of their program, constituted a safety concern when sleep deprived pledges were being required to drive others around.

Even our insurance company, FRMT, takes a position on designated drivers.  You would think they would LOVE it!  But, they don't.

Again, particularly if it's a requirement for the pledge class, it may be hazing.  But beyond that, whether pledge or brother, there is some risk.  The example was a chapter that always included a brother as "designated driver" when guys were at the bar.  One night, 6 or so brothers were returning and the car was in an accident.  There was no fault (nor alcohol) ascribed to the driver.  However, one of the (presumably drunken) brothers was seriously injured.  By the time he arrived at the hospital, there were permanent injuries.

The family sued the fraternity because it had a policy that a brother would be a designated driver and failed to properly instruct and prepare that driver for care and handling of drunken passengers, directly leading to the enhanced injuries of their client!

As always, there's never only one or simple answer to these kinds of issues.  If you're unsure, undergrad or elder can contact IHQ and get some guidance.  We promise not to kill the messenger (another cliché!).  Besides, better safe than sorry!  (I've got a million of 'em!).

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
