Dave's Desk - Alumni Development
Hopefully you'll
read the notice of Zeta Psi hiring an Alumni Development Director. Our
alumni are the front line support of our organization and we need to pay more
attention to attracting, cultivating, and communicating with our most
valuable resource - our members.
Sim Bridgen starts later this
month. He'll work up a method of capturing data on graduating seniors and
involving them in their local group; he'll contact local alumni and attract
them to participate; he'll collect information on members not in our database
system, he'll build local group to help train our chapters, and he'll organize
regional alumni events.
Sim has a great background in these kind of
activities from his tenure as alumni president of the Theta Xi Alumni
Association.
Taking care of this vital area can only improve our
organization even more.
Welcome Sim!

Washington DC Elders
MacLane Key

DC Elders welcomed the actives and
colonists back to school with the inaugural season of the Capitol
Cup Competition last month. DC Elders have only played one
game, but we dominated the colonists from American University.
Two weeks into the football portion
of the Capitol Cup, DC Elders and the colonists from George Washington lead the
pack with 1-0 records.
The actives from Georgetown found
themselves on both sides of a one touchdown difference game to earn a 1-1
record, their only loss coming in overtime.
The colonists from American
University struggled in their first game against DC Elders, but showed
remarkable improvement the next week. Still, they fell three yards short
of tying the game with less than a minute left to fall to 0-2.
The actives from Maryland have yet
to play, and may face a disadvantage going against more seasoned teams.
October will be a busy month for DC
Elders, as the Capitol Cup Competition continues, a Happy
Hour is held on the first Tuesday of the month and our Fall
Scotch Tasting takes place on October 13th. DC Elders will
also have its second Tuxedo Giveaway at the Scotch Tasting, so RSVP
and Pre-Pay Now!
No RSVP is necessary for either the Capitol
Cup games or the Happy Hour.

Zeta Psi NYC RAWC Stephen Halperin
|
For the past few months a group of New York City based
Zetes have been getting together for dinners under the name "Zeta Psi NYC
RAWC." With due respect to Dan Backer, the name is a play on his RAC
project. It stands for Regional Alumni Wine Club.
This all started when Maurice Ducoing (pronounced Du-Coin!), and Jared Sunshine
and I worked an LTI at the Tau house on wine tasting. We enjoyed it so
much that we decided we should get together at home in NYC for a wine
night. From that humble beginning, we have grown to having dinner
together every two to three weeks.
The cost of admission? Bring a drinkable bottle of wine, at a price point you
are comfortable with, RSVP that you are joining us, and pay for your share of
dinner. So far our group has ranged in size from 3 brothers at a dinner
to 12 brothers, and we average 6 brothers per dinner. We have had local
brothers from the Beta Tau, Psi, Phi, Omicron, Alpha, Nu,Tau, Nu Sigma, Phi
Epsilon, and Iota Alpha join us. We have also had visiting brothers from
Georgia, Illinois and Nebraska join us.
We look for restaurants in NYC that have generous corkage policies (ie...FREE)
and can handle a large group. We usually meet on a Monday night, but
occasionally meet on a Sunday. One night we even had a special dinner at
Shafer City, an Oyster Bar owned by the father of one of our brothers.
This has turned out to be a great way to learn about wine, taste different
wines, have a nice dinner and socialize with local Zetes.
Would you like to join us? Our emailing list has 25 Brothers on it. If you
would like to be notified of upcoming dinners email Stephen Halperin at Stephen.Halperin@gmail.com
and ask to be put on the NYC RAWC list. We look forward to seeing you there!

A NEW FOCUS
|
You will get a (temporary) respite
from insurance propaganda this month.
Zeta Psi has taken a very important
and bold step to invest in our future.
Alan Rice, the generous Zete whose
contribution makes the LTI Elder Academy and other Elder focused efforts
possible, challenged the Board in Cleveland. His challenge was simple:
We need to do more, now, to rekindle our brothers' involvement and enjoyment in
being a Zete.
As a smaller fraternity, we do not
have the number of chapters or level of foundation assets that many of our
larger Greek organizations have. We tend to work on the current issues of
recruitment, initiations, chapter operations, communications and financial
support. All are very, very important. But we have not been able to
address some of the "long term" issues....the Zete-for-Life issues that we
should. With Alan's help, we are taking a big step to do that
today.
Zeta Psi has just hired a full time
Elder Development Director, Sim Brigden, attended the Universities of Waterloo
& Toronto, and joined Theta Xi in 1979, currently living in Toronto.
We've given Sim a very challenging set of objectives on a very swift schedule
but it basically boils down to one thing---find, communicate, illustrate,
organize, assist Elders to reconnect with Zeta Psi.
From the day we transition from
actives to Elders there are multiple demands on our time---jobs, careers,
relationships, families---all very important and often immediate
priorities. And during these periods we may have "fallen away" from our
local chapter's activity; moved across country from our school; been out of
touch with other area Zetes or not "up to date" on areas of interest in the
International. And, as is often the case, we've simply stayed "out of
touch", partly because Zeta Psi has not had the ability to help you get
re-connected.
We're going to change that.
With Sim leading the effort, we're
going to find those Elders that have "dropped out" of our data base; we're
going to correct the information we do have so it is effective; we're going to
contact Zetes of chapters that need alumni guidance and support and help you
put that together. We're going to identify Zetes in areas, cities,
regions that didn't know each other and facilitate the opportunity for getting
together to share experiences and brotherhood. We're going to provide the
information to brothers that now have the time and interest to participate in
the volunteer leadership and work of the international fraternity. And
we're going to begin this process at the moment that active becomes an
Elder.
Why? Because being a Zete
means a lifelong commitment to share our brotherhood with each other; to
contribute our experience to those coming after us; to participate for the
betterment of the whole organization; to share a beer, and a story, and
brotherhood with an old friend or a (soon to be) new one who understands
because they also had that same Zete Experience.
Maybe we've neglected our Elder
organization in the past due to the press of current priorities.
That's going to change, so......get
ready!
