Dave's Desk - 100 Years of The Circle
This fall Zeta Psi will celebrate
100 years of The Circle magazine. We're planning extra pages to
commemorate the past 100 years with key articles reprints, pictures of past
covers, and any interesting stories from YOU! If you have something
appropriate for publishing please send it in and we'll take a look. And
for you alumni and active leaders, we need a article from you about the status
of your group - something short and sweet in a 200 word length.
Also, if you have moved recently or
did not receive a Circle last fall please update your address with us - send it
to my "contact me" link below. We'd like as many Zetes to
receive this commemorative edition as possible. Look for The Centennial
Circle in your mail box in early December.

ZeteScouts
is looking to expand its footprint of philanthropy this academic year, and
needs your help!
Maybe you're a chapter that needs help with
philanthropic direction.
Perhaps you're an elder "marooned" away from a
chapter who still wants to be active.
We can work with you in any
situation in order to build a lasting relationship between our men and Scouts
who need their direction. Keep your ears and eyes peeled for us, and if
you'd like to share or request information, contact the chairman at bosetti@gmail.com.

163rd Zeta Psi Convention in New Orleans
August 2010
|
Get ready for the 2010 Zeta Psi Convention in New
Orleans. Today, I am going to write about the guest program. It
seems everyone is (rightfully so) excited about visiting New Orleans. And
it is a great convention city, but what about our guests, and alumni who wish
to partake in more touristy activities? While our program is not yet set in
stone, let me tell you a few things we are thinking about.......
First, the New Orleans School of Cooking. Before you groan in anguish, let me
tell you about this great activity. You arrive at the school and are
ushered into a private cooking facility. They serve you a morning pick me up
and you settle in to watch an instructor entertain you while cooking
traditional New Orleans dishes (Jambalaya, Gumbo and Bread Pudding), then along
with some local beer, you get to eat the food!
There is also Bloody Mary's Voodo walking tour of the French Quarter. It
starts at Jean Laffite's Blacksmith Shop, one of the oldest bars in the country. Jean Laffite's is a place that the locals meet to plot the
overthrow of the French. From Jean Laffites Bloody Mary takes you to the
only Cemetery in the French Quarter, and the tomb of Marie Laveau. You
also pass her house on the way to the cemetery.
There is also the Farmers Market and Flee Market in the French Quarter. That's
me in this photo just outside the market. There you can get many New Orleans
specialty items. It's also around the corner from the US Mint.
Come join us in New Orleans for the 2010 Convention. I guarantee a great time!

Zete Kids David Loomis

Zete Kids has its first chapter-related event this semester on the
calendar. The brothers at Virginia Tech will be holding their annual Miss
Virginia Tech Pageant on October 24th, details can be found on the event's
website: http://www.missvt.org/.
The proceeds from the event will be going directly to Zete Kids to help make
more worthwhile programming for Zeta Psi's chapters to serve children-based
hospitals and education programs.
We have been working on an explanatory packet this past month to help our
undergraduate chapters understand who we are, and how they can use our help in
creating and maintaining successful philanthropic programs. This packet
will be sent out with the traveling consultant from IHQ to each of the
presidents over the coming months. If you are an interested philanthropy
chair, chapter president, or elder chapter representative who is interested in
holding a philanthropic event with Zete Kids, please send an e-mail to president@zetekids.org
to get an online version of the packet.
We are also looking for alumni volunteers to serve as mentors to help guide
chapters through the planning and execution of a philanthropic event. If
you are looking for a fun and easy way to give back to our active brothers,
please send an e-mail along to board@zetekids.org
Once again, we would like to thank all of our donors and silent auction winners
from convention. We are looking forward to a very productive fall, and
are always open to any interested volunteers.

We have the pleasure of continuing the introduction of
our Hub Directors for the upcoming year. Nasser Toukan has recently
agreed to become Regional Director of our new Toronto Hub. We look
forward to having Nas represent our interests here in Canada, and I look
forward to working with both hubs moving forward. Please contact us if
you have leads on positions in the Toronto area for next summer.
Biography:
I am Nasser Toukan, a brother from the Theta Xi chapter and an undergraduate student
at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. I am currently pursuing my
Bachelors of Science (including Honors) in Human Biology with a specialization
in Genes, Genetics and Biotechnology and a Major in Bioethics.
I was born in
Amman, Jordan on December 10th, 1987 and have lived in Toronto, Canada since
2005. When I am not at class or studying I like to play soccer, run, workout
and practice Taekwondo. This, of course, excludes my (perhaps over) active
nightlife and Zete involvement.
I am this summer's SELF intern at SibTech
Biotechnology Inc. in Brookfield, Connecticut, and I plan to pursue a joint
MSc/MBA in Biotechnology at the University of Toronto over the course of the
next few years. I like to live my life by this motto: Build like you're going
to live forever, but live like you are going to die tomorrow.
Please Join us in welcoming him into the ranks of SELF management, while
congratulating him on his completion of our summer program.

After its most successful summer term, Washington
Scholars is welcoming its Fall 2009 class to the nation's capital this
week. Continuing on that success, this class, smaller in number than its
summer counterpart, will arrive in Washington in the midst of some of the most
heated policy battles in the nation's recent history.
Fall Scholars will
benefit from the heightened public policy debate, as well as from a highly
personalized and intensive schedule of professional training and
networking. Washington Scholars will also unveil a revamped
WashingtonScholars.org this fall -- look for an announcement soon.

Zeta Psi NYC RAWC Stephen Halperin
|
For the past few months a group of New York City based
Zetes have been getting together for dinners under the name "Zeta Psi NYC
RAWC." With due respect to Dan Backer, the name is a play on his RAC
project. It stands for Regional Alumni Wine Club.
This all started when Maurice Ducoing (pronounced Du-Coin!), and Jared Sunshine
and I worked an LTI at the Tau house on wine tasting. We enjoyed it so
much that we decided we should get together at home in NYC for a wine
night. From that humble beginning, we have grown to having dinner
together every two to three weeks.
The cost of admission? Bring a drinkable bottle of wine, at a price point you
are comfortable with, RSVP that you are joining us, and pay for your share of
dinner. So far our group has ranged in size from 3 brothers at a dinner
to 12 brothers, and we average 6 brothers per dinner. We have had local
brothers from the Beta Tau, Psi, Phi, Omicron, Alpha, Nu,Tau, Nu Sigma, Phi
Epsilon, and Iota Alpha join us. We have also had visiting brothers from
Georgia, Illinois and Nebraska join us.
We look for restaurants in NYC that have generous corkage policies (ie...FREE)
and can handle a large group. We usually meet on a Monday night, but
occasionally meet on a Sunday. One night we even had a special dinner at
Shafer City, an Oyster Bar owned by the father of one of our brothers.
This has turned out to be a great way to learn about wine, taste different
wines, have a nice dinner and socialize with local Zetes.
Would you like to join us? Our emailing list has 25 Brothers on it. If you
would like to be notified of upcoming dinners email Stephen Halperin at Stephen.Halperin@gmail.com
and ask to be put on the NYC RAWC list. We look forward to seeing you there!

8:00 AM Monday morning classes!
|
Yeah, yeah,
you're all back at school, complaining about your schedule (three days
you have to be up by 10am!), the condition of the house, what your hookup
potential is likely to be, and the Rush Chair on your case about talking to
frosh.
Well, when I
was in school we had 8am Saturday classes that were mandatory
attendance, and we walked uphill to the house in snow, with newspapers in our
shoes......
Oh,
wait, that's the other speech....
Ok, so
you're back at school!
Now what are
you going to do? Well, take some time to put some plans in place for the
semester. Do you have that "rolling recruiting" program in place so that everybody
in the chapter is "rushing" all the time, instead of a few guys
shouldering the load? Has the Gamma taken care of initiation or chapter
fees left over from June so that you're not getting a Discipline Committee
notice for a hearing? Have the guys that went to Convention actually passing
on some of the LTI and other information that everybody in the house can use?
(And regaling some real or imagined evening exploits is NOT reporting on the
convention!)
Get all this
stuff done NOW...because it's only going to get more hectic, more pressing, and
more difficult the longer you put it off. A Supreme Council meeting to
layout the semester requirements; make sure everyone knows their goals and time
lines; and generally "communicate" across chapter areas can be the best first
step.
Beyond those
suggestions, there's really no need for me to badger you the rest of this
column, so I'll make it short this month.
BUT, for
those at (a very successful Cleveland) Convention, or guys that actually read
these UpZetes, the revised insurance proposal is officially on the table.
I intend to spend the next couple articles given some detail background on the
factors and rationale of the new proposal so everyone can understand where
we're going with this.
I'm sure you
cannot wait for those nail biting articles, but, until then, take the
time now while you still have some to plan out your semester...both individually
and as a chapter. It will make things so much easier come Thanksgiving
time!
