Convention Fun

As many of you who read the UpZete know, Zeta Psi has its annual convention coming up next month.  I'd like to encourage each Zete to attend the convention.  One of the many things that makes our Zete experience as strong as it is is the friendships we make with our fellow Zetes.  While we interact daily with Zetes as active members we seldom get the opportunity to meet Zetes from other chapters.  As alumni the opportunities are even less.  The convention is the best place to meet our international brothers.  I know I have made many lifelong friends that I met at conventions and only see at conventions.  We're in Cleveland, OH August 12th to the 16th.  We have fun events planned each evening and we're right in the heart of downtown at the Renaissance Cleveland on Franklin Square.

I hope to see you in Cleveland!

Have you purchased your tickets to Convention 2009 yet?  We're excited to see all of you in Cleveland, Ohio from August 12th - 15th for some great times with good friends.  In addition to the Leadership Training Institute sessions, don't miss the chance for a private reception at the huge Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Indians game, and the clam bake at the CWRU - Nu Chapter House.

There are lots of pricing options depending on whether you are a delegate, or a brother, or a guest.  There are also special convention rates at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel - where we'll be staying.  The convention website has links to restaurants nearby the hotel, in case you're looking for additional eating options, as well as recently updated bars within walking distance, offering Zeta Psi specials for the whole week.

We hope you're getting excited, and look forward to seeing you in August!

Zete Kids Silent Auction

WSFP bannerSummer is in full swing, and the International Convention season is close at hand.  ZeteKids will again be holding the annual Silent Auction during the Grand Chapter Banquet on Saturday August 15th.  All proceeds from the silent auction go towards the Zete Kids Foundation which makes monetary donations on behalf of Zeta Psi Chapters to worthy children's causes and charities in the areas of education, medical needs, and leadership development.

As the convention is only a month away, the auction committee is asking for your auction donations as soon as possible, but at the latest by Thursday August 13th of convention so that we can prepare appropriately.  Past donations have included but are not limited to checked luggage size artwork, old Zete badges, Zete memorabilia, University related items, golf weekend packages, vacation-home weekends, themed gift baskets, collectibles, sporting event tickets, chapter specific t-shirts, sportswear, corporate gift packages, VIP dinners, tour packages, etc.

I would also like to encourage all of our new Alumni Clubs, Elder Chapters, and Active Chapters around the country to hopefully make a group donation.

ZeteKids is a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation and all donations are tax-deductible within the regulations of US federal tax law.  At the time of donation, a letter will be provided for tax purposes upon request.  If you would like to send any donation items prior to convention please send them to:

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please email or call David Loomis at: 574-333-1562 or david.a.loomis@gmail.com

Putting some Money where our Mouths Are...

Pardon the tortured metaphor, but I've been writing here about changes for Zeta Psi.  We intend to start focusing most of our IHQ efforts on a single objective:  The Ideal Chapter.  As we refine that notion, it points the way to several other sub-assignments.  One of the most significant is insurance costs.

I've addressed this several times in the past, and I am now going to highlight some of the changes that will be proposed in Cleveland and the rationale for them being increases/decreases to a base insurance rate/man.  Much more detail will be available at Convention.

HOUSE

It's the Chapter, not the "building"....we say it all the time.  But in insurance and litigation, it sometimes is the building.  Any structure which is occupied by undergraduate brothers, with or without external identification, and recognized as "the Zete house" on campus is a "house".  The significance is it places the Zeta Psi name in the public arena, and if anything goes wrong within it, or with the people who live there, it will be perceived as a "Zeta Psi" action.  This leads to a Zeta Psi lawsuit.  The size of the building or number of occupants really isn't the key.

GPA; Financial Standing; Chapter Awards

Besides being key factors in an Ideal Chapter, these attributes generally indicate a well run chapter.  Brothers are responsible; officers are on top of things; communications are effectively transmitted.  Brothers that pay their bills; rush and pledge properly; participate extensively on campus and study instead of partying are much less likely to engage in risky behavior.  And in any case, should get some financial "reward" for playing by the rules compared to less focused chapters.

CLAIM EXPERIENCE

This is perhaps the most obvious factor.  Zeta Psi covers the $2,500 deductible on every claim.  Any additional deductibles from claims from the same chapter within a 5 year "rolling average" period are the responsibility of the chapter.

Additionally, Zeta Psi assumes the next $25,000 loss of every claim, which is a cost to all members.  Consequently, chapters with multiple claims will be required to repay a portion of the incurred loss.

All these efforts are designed to do one thing:  Apply additional costs to chapters for their individual risky behavior while reducing costs to successfully operating chapters who work toward the Ideal Chapter model.

More to come.....
