New Orleans to Host 2010 Convention!

The Beta Tau chapter at Tulane
University is proud to be the host of
the 2010 Zeta Psi International Convention in beautiful New Orleans! The Convention will kick off Wednesday August 18th with a Jazz Riverboat Cruise down the muddy Mississippi River and will conclude with the traditional
Zete Banquet on Saturday evening. All of our brothers will be staying at The
Royal Sonesta, a hotel renowned for both its location (deep in the heart of the
French Quarter on Bourbon Street) and it's... um... "history" with brothers of Zeta
Psi (for more details, as well as a wonderful rendition of "Walking to New
Orleans," please contact Elder "Scum" from the Theta Xi chapter). The hotel covers
an entire block of Bourbon Street
and also features interior courtyards with an outdoor pool. Below is a picture
taken of hotel at twilight.
Other planned convention events include a dinner and tour at
Mardi Gras World and a free night in New
Orleans so that everyone has an opportunity to see the
city. For more information, please email Will Woldenberg at wwoldenb@gmail.com or speak with any BT
Zete at the 2009 Convention in Cleveland!
The brothers of Beta Tau look forward to showing you some
southern hospitality in August of 2010 and, as we say in New Orleans, Laissez les bon temps rouler!!!

With less than 2 months to go, Convention Registration is
increasing daily. It appears that Cleveland will yet again be the host of an
amazing convention, with brothers coming from all over the continent to join
us. Our Convention committee has prepared for us some very exciting social
events this time, including an Indians game and the huge Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame, so why are you waiting? Delegates from each
chapter, active and Elder, should be sure they've registered online
or contacted IHQ, and various pricing options are available to brothers
and their guests. And don't forget to book your stay with our rates at
the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel.
All information is accessible on the
zetapsi2009.com website,
and if there's anything in particular you need or have questions about, don't
hesitate to contact IHQ (800.477.1847).

Liability
Insurance
Zeta
Psi had a "good" year with only one minor incident. We've had two
reportable incidents in two years compared to twelve incidents the three
previous years. We are certainly doing better! We must continue to be vigilant
and follow our Risk Management Policy. Only when Zeta Psi has year after year
of zero claims can we acknowledge success.

Zete Kids USA
ZKUSA continues to see consistent activity in several chapters, but new
chapters are always welcome to start helping. We welcome back board
member Dave Loomis to the USA. Dave's global wandering while working on
the Zetes Without Borders Initiative has kept us all entertained for
many months.
We will be having a silent auction at convention again
this year and encourage members to contact ZeteKidz about bringing any
items. We will again have many rare and valuable Zete items so be sure
to save your pennies. We will be sending out more information soon
about the scheduled philanthropy event in Cleveland next month.
ZeteKidz proudly continues to coordiante local chairty events to
benefit the communities of our host chapters.
There will be an open
meeting of the ZKUSA Board of Trustees in Cleveland, and every active
or elder interested in learning about or helping ZKUSA is welcome. We
are looking forward to seeing everyone in Cleveland in August.

Why are we always getting called about late
bills?
The obvious answer is...because you haven't paid them!
But, I want to delve into this issue a little bit more. This month I
and Executive Director David Hunter will be attending a meeting of our
"captive" insurance company, FRMT. Without this effort prior fraternal
brothers initiated several years ago, 28 fraternity members would either be
paying substantially more in insurance, or not be operating at all since they
could not obtain or pay for coverage.
Because of their importance, insurance fees are ones that we push strongly
for timely payment. I will address a new proposal for developing such fees in a
future UpZete and presentation at the Cleveland Convention. But
realistically, there is no difference between Insurance, Initiation or Chapter
fees...they all need to be paid.
The aspect that I want to address is what happens when a brother does not
carry his weight in the chapter, i.e. does not pay his bills. While there
are always extraordinary circumstances that can be addressed, 99% of the time
it is simply a guy that spent his money on something more important to him than
his pledge and oath to Zeta Psi and his brothers.
When he doesn't pay...the chapter can't pay. And that endangers the
chapter's standing regardless of whether it is an initiation fee, a charge from
"last year", or insurance. This is no different than this guy standing up
in a chapter meeting and saying "I want to go to the bar tonight, so I'm not
paying initiation fees....you guys all got to pitch in $20 for me."
I cannot imagine a group of Zetes taking that affront amicably! But,
in effect, you do it all the time when you are in arrears. One
"explanation" I've heard is ... "Oh, he's a brother, we can't (discipline in some
manner) over fees."
If he's stiffing you and the chapter HE's the one not acting like a
brother!
Personally, I'm incensed when brothers simply refuse their obligations that
they just committed an oath to fulfill. The result will be chapters
before Discipline Committee much quicker than in the past, and, unfortunately,
some chapter suspensions because of it.
Please don't be that brother!
