Washington Scholars Chris Bond
On May 1st, the Washington Scholars program held its Spring Graduation and Reception at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, DC. More than one hundred members of the public policy community attended, including many special guests -- top brass and up-and-coming leaders from all sides of the policy world: political, non-profit, federal agencies and military.
Washington Scholars founder (and former Phi Alpha) RADM James Carey honors Todd Gaziano of the Heritage Foundation for a decade of partnership between the two organizations.
In just a few weeks, we'll welcome our largest ever class -- 35 Scholars -- to the nation's capital for the experience of a lifetime. During these tough economic times, when so many non-profits are faltering and cutting back their services, it is truly a credit to us and to everyone associated with the program that Washington Scholars is doing the exact opposite -- growing larger and growing stronger.

End Of Year Review
As the
school year comes to an end let's take stock of where we are in Zeta Psi.
We had an excellent year with recruitment, initiating 611 this year compared to
595 last year and 511 the year before. We have ended the year adding two
new chapters - the Gamma Epsilon at Georgetown and the Theta Eta at Brock
University. Unfortunately we also lost three chapters - the Delta at
Rutgers due to probation violations and both the Alpha at Columbia and the
Sigma Zeta at UCLA due to low numbers. This leaves us at 43 active
chapters at this time. It's a good thing we are embarking on an ambitious
expansion program for next year as we need to get back to our former
numbers. On the liability front, with one a few weeks left of school,
Zeta Psi has not had a liability claim - actives, keep up the good work!
We need a string of years without claims!
Zeta Psi
Educational Foundation issued $60,000 of scholarships and $55,000 of scholar
grants. The scholarships go to worthy Zetes. We always have a very
competitive group of applicants, but, sadly, the 100 or so applicants each
semester only represent 20 of our chapters - over half of our membership does
not even apply! The foundation also presented eight Leadership Training
Institutes (LTIs) and one Alumni Academy. We also hosted five Regional
alumni Club events.
All in all, we had a very good year at Zeta
Psi. We need to end chapter closings, but we need the undergraduates at
troubled chapters to take responsibility for the success of their
chapter. The future, however, does look bright. Happy summer to all
Zetes!

SELF Update Eric Romeril (Waterloo '08)
Despite the flagging world economy and uncertainty
causing hiring freezes, SELF is happy to report strong growth in 2009 (unlike
my stock portfolio!).
The existing Sibtech placements have persisted with help
from ZPEF. Nasser Toukan (Toronto) and Arjun Kanuri(Tufts) will be two
Fellows pushing the boundaries of science and working towards becoming
co-authors of a published scientific peer-reviewed article. They are
going to be living and working in Danbury CT. From there we plan to have
them interface with other exemplary Zetes from the WSS and WSFP.
I am also pleased to announce that we have just received
our first batch of pins acknowledging individual contributions to this young
organization. Pins will be presented to those that have helped us grow,
members of our board, and of course past Fellows. It will be a small
token of our thanks for their continued efforts towards the success of SELF.
We are looking at establish Hubs for our program, to anchor some of our
students geographically and provide rallying points around the country.
The first two places that we are actively pursuing partners, for coming
years, will be Boston (MA) and Toronto (ON). If you are a Zete from these areas
and interested in developing a relationship with SELF: I would relish the
opportunity to share our vision with you. Please contact me at eric.jp.romeril@gmail.com
at your convenience.

Editor's Farewell Dan Backer
This May
marks the 50th UpZete during my tenure as editor, and my last.
As I prepare to graduate Law school, study for the Bar, and begin a new career,
I look back at the evolution of the UpZete into a core part of our Brotherly
experience. It has been a tremendous honor serving as Zeta Psi's Editor -
of the UpZete & the Circle - and one that I have greatly enjoyed both on
staff and as a volunteer, and I thank all of you for your continued readership,
support, and participation in our Brotherhood.
June
marks our Circle Centennial, the 100th anniversary of the first
publication of the Circle of Zeta Psi that has bound our Brotherhood closer
together for a century. It also begins the tenure of our new Circle &
UpZete Editor, Jon Agresta (UMASS/Upsilon Mu '05). Jon has been helping
put together the UpZete the last two months and I have no doubt he will
continue to improve the UpZete. Communication has always been a key to
success in every organization, and the prophetic words of Brother Comstock
still hold true - by binding us together, by sharing our struggles and
successes, and by communicating with one another, we have tightened the bonds
of Brotherhood that we hold so dear.
I
hope you'll all join me in wishing Jon many years of great success as he leads
us into the Centennial year of the vision of Bill Comstock!
Gratefully
yours in Tau Kappa Phi, Dan Backer, UMASS/Upsilon Mu '99

Government Relations Update
Zete's GR
program continues to generate results as part of the Fraternity & Sorority
community's efforts to pass CHIA, the Collegiate Housing & Infrastructure
Act. As of this writing, there are now 133 bi-partisan co-sponsors in the
House, and 19 in the Senate. That's only 85 House Sponsors short of our
goal of 218 (a majority) and 22 more needed in the Senate!
Our GR
Program is also getting some new leadership as Fernando Cortes (Illinois\Alpha Epsilon '04)
takes over as Zeta Psi Government Relations Chairman, and we welcome all 3 of
our 2009 student advocates to our management team: Dan Florencia, Joe
Lauria, and Nate Sultz! A big "Thank You" to all three for their work on
the 2009 NIC advocacy program on Capitol Hill, and to outgoing Government
Relations Committee founding Chairman Dan Backer (UMASS/Upsilon Mu '99).
Want to
help pass CHIA? Here's how:
-
Become your Active or Elder
Chapters government Relations chairman, or just volunteer to help out - email
Fernando Cortes at cortes.fernando@hotmail.com to get started.
-
Join Zeta Psi's Government
Relations FaceBook group
- this will help us better communicate with all our GR leaders &
volunteers!
-
Join the Capitol Fraternal Caucus
FaceBook group -
be part of our larger community's efforts to pass CHIA.
-
Use the CFC FaceBook application
to "petition your Congressman" about CHIA.
A special
thank you to those Brothers who generously contributed to ensure all three of
our undergraduate advocates in April could attend the 2009 FSPAC Congressional
Leadership Dinner: Gary
Mootz, Pi Sigma, Peter Slomianyj, Theta, David Russell, Phi Lambda, Stu Bowers,
Phi Epsilon, James Carey, Omega, Jack Brady, Phi Epsilon, Jim Llunglin, Pi, Bob

 Bookkeeping Follow Up
Following
up on my comments last month about finishing up year end bookkeeping issue
around the chapter, I want to address a similar related issue.
In the
past several years there has been less than diligent recordation of initiates'
bio information; pins; graduating brothers' changes of address and email
addresses.
If you
have not provided all the necessary bio information to IHQ, please do so.
Equally,
it is extremely important that graduating brothers provide new address
information, including email addresses. As we all rely more and
more on electronic "connections" for quick, comprehensive information exchange,
this data becomes more critical.
You can
send your information to IHQ or provide it from our Zeta Psi website.
I am also
aware that IHQ may owe some items to NIBs. Upon receipt of initiation fee
and bio information, IHQ is to issue your certificate, badge, recognition pin.
While I'd like to say we are always on top of that stuff, with a
primarily volunteer organization and frequent turnover of paid staff, some
things simply fall through the cracks. And, worse, we may not even know
it is still due when a staff position is in transition.
So, if
you believe that you are due any material, then please contact IHQ. We
want you to have what you paid for, and we want to have our database as current
as possible.
We can
provide your chapter with a list of members and data for the past several years
so that you can cross check it and make sure we are not missing any
brothers. If you would like such a list, let IHQ know.
For any
such requests, contact Anthony Abbate at abbate@zetapsi.org, or
Barbara Ross at bross@zetapsi.org. If you seem to be having
problems getting what you need, feel free to copy me as well..... david.busacca@yahoo.com.
I promise I will get the paddle out if necessary....non-hazing since it does not
involve undegrads!
I hope
you all enjoy your summer...whether relaxing or working...and hope to see many of
you at Convention in Cleveland in August.
Always in Tau Kappa Phi, David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII |
