Help pass CHIA in the Stimulus Package TODAY

What is CHIA?  The Collegiate Housing Infrastructure Act would make all donations to buy, build, or upgrade Chapter Houses tax-deductible.  This would be a huge benefit to Zeta Psi and provide vital economic stimulus to the battered housing industry, insure modern housing for all Greeks, and save lives!

Who's working on this?  The Capital Fraternal Caucus (CFC) is a DC-based team of volunteer professionals coordinating the efforts of Greeks nationwide to pass CHIA.

How'd we do in 2008?  Until the sudden death of lead sponsor, Stephanie Tubbs-Jones (D-OH/Delta Sigma Theta), CHIA had 210 bi-partisan sponsors in the House, and 40 in the Senate - just short of majorities.  Zete's have actively supported this through (a) the CFC Website's (www.fraternalcaucus.org) registration & letter writing tool for individuals to write their representatives, with 76 registrants (#27 of 95 groups) and (b) The CFC FaceBook application (www.cfcfacebook.com) which does the same, with 48 registrants (#5 of 57 groups).

What are we doing in 2009?  Our goal is to pass CHIA as part of the Economic Stimulus package before Congress NOW.  To do that, we need to apply pressure to Congress THIS MONTH.  Otherwise, we will continue trying to gain sponsors to pass CHIA later this year.

WHAT CAN I DO?
1.  Become your Active or Elder Chapter's Government Relations Chairman (GRC) and help coordinate our efforts - this is VITAL.  Email dbacker@zetapsi.org or contact your Active or Elder Phi.
2.  Take 5 minutes to register online at the CFC website (www.fraternalcaucus.org) AND/OR the CFC FaceBook application (www.cfcfacebook.com).
3.  Contact your Congressman and Senators to urge them to include CHIA in the stimulus package.  email dbacker@zetapsi.org for contact info for your representatives and talking points.

ComstockCircle Centennial
100 years of the vision of Bill Comstock

June 2009 marks the 100th year of Publication of the Circle of Zeta Psi, our Fraternity Magazine.  We plan to commemorate this major milestone - and the enduring vision of Bill Comstock that ties our brotherhood together - in a number of ways.

A special 52-page Circle Centennial edition is being planned for June 2009, with a look at the past, present, and future of Zeta Psi and all our Chapters.  We would love to distribute this unique extra-large edition to every Brother - in addition to our regular Fall 2008 & 2009 Circle's - but the cost is pretty significant.  Instead, we're considering either a unique online-only edition using our new interactive platform, or a DONOR-ONLY mailing of the Circle Centennial.

We're also looking to archive all 100 years of the Circle online - a huge task that will take many years and many dollars, but will make our entire history accessible - from the first prophetic words of Brother Comstock to the historic Chartering of our Oxford Chapter.

Where we are

As Spring 2009 is right around the corner let me give all of you an update on where we are in Zeta Psi.  Currently we have 44 active chapters and 3 colonies.  If things go as expected we'll have chartering ceremonies for our Georgetown University colony on March 7th, our Brock University group on March 28th, and our California - Riverside group in May.  This past fall Zeta Psi initiated 365 men.  We are on target to hit our 600 initiate goal for the school year.

The IHQ staff has been busy with visiting chapters, running Leadership Training Institutes, and attending important chapter events across North America.  Of course all staff members have helped with the most favored task of collecting fees - chapters, please, we need your help in getting your fees in!

This spring continuing staff duties will be performed by Anthony Shibata, Omicron '06 and Anthony Abbate, Phi '07.  Pat Kepp, Alpha Pi '10, has finished his year sabbatical with IHQ and returned to Virginia Tech to finish his degree.  Ruben Vina, Theta Xi '08 will come on full-time this spring to round out the staff.  Along with our ever faithful office administrator, Barbara Ross, all of your Zeta Psi IHQ 2009!

PJ CirellaActive Profile: Patrick "PJ" Cirella

NYU/Phi '09, Hotel Management Major
Past Gamma, Alpha Phi, Pledgemaster

PJ joined Zeta Psi as a sophomore, having met and known Zetes from several chapters before having the opportunity to join himself. Since then, he's made it a point of becoming as involved with Zeta Psi as possible, and wishes he could have joined earlier to have had one more year. PJ has attended two LTIs, our Convention in Nebraska, and visited 5 other chapters. His favorite event is Cornell/Psi chapter's annual Chinese Dining recruitment event, which he plans on attending this coming weekend for the third time. In addition, PJ is a member of our Undergraduate Membership Development Committee and is the Phi chapter's liaison in establishing a New York City LTI. During LTIs, PJ enjoys the focus on ritual history, background, and knowledge, as well as Maurice Ducoing's presentation of chapter/university relations.

As a senior at NYU, PJ is beginning his job hunt and taking full advantage of his last semester as a Zete. He's looking forward to the NYC LTI and making it to Cleveland and many future Conventions, as he's had to spend the last semester enduring all the stories he's heard of great times had in Montreal without him. Because of the current market and lack of hotel development, he plans to spend some time in luxury hotel management then take some time to get his MBA, hopefully at a school with a Zete chapter, because "in my experience we are at the best schools anyway"

Breaking new ground and new Chapters

Zeta Psi has had success - and a lot of luck - the past few years at starting or reactivating Chapters. We've chartered at Oshawa, Binghamton, Georgia, NCSU, Texas, and Oxford, and plan to Charter at Georgetown, Brock, and UC-Riverside shortly with several Elder-led restarts planned.  We've been lucky to have strong groups come to us themselves or through an existing Zete with one exception, Georgetown, where an effort by the DC Elders created this new Chapter.

Feb. 22 - Mar. 7 Zete embarks on an ambitious program in Washington DC based on the success of Georgetown.  Working with DC Elders and Washington Scholars, our flagship Maryland Chapter, and Georgetown, Zeta Psi is targeting George Washington University & American University.  With strong Active & Elder participation, our IHQ staff 'boots on the ground' will spend 2 weeks aggressively recruiting at GW & AU using a detailed new plan.  If successful, this could lead to a new long term strategy - and 2 new Chapters!

YOU CAN HELP!  If you have family, friends, or referrals at either school, let us know - CLICK HERE to email Dhunter@zetapsi.org. This is an exciting opportunity and any help you can provide would be great!
LTI LOGOLeadership Training
Update

Happy New Year to all of you, I trust everyone had a pleasant, restful holiday. Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, and with the end of the break comes the start of the collegiate semester. However, (to brighten your mood) with the start of the spring semester, marks a new year of LTI training. I am very happy to announce that all of you are invited to attend. Forms are already online so feel free to register in advance.  We will be kicking off in less than a week with the Kirby Future Leader's Conference (Phi Conference) at Lafayette College. This is shaping up to be quite a weekend with over 40 Chapter Phi's in attendance.  We will follow this with our Mid-Atlantic LTI at Rutgers, Midwest LTI, Canadian LTI, Southern LTI, and New Orleans LTI. Please check online for specific dates.

As you can see, the spring will be busy so please register quickly and completely to keep everything in order. All of us at the International Headquarters hope that 2009 continues to build upon the success of the 2008 program and with your help we will achieve this goal. If you have any questions or would like more specific information please reference our website at zetapsi.org or contact Anthony Shibata at ashibata@zetapsi.org.

Dave Busacca(A Different) New year

As we start 2009, this new year presents many challenges for all of us.

Regardless of political interests and views, we must acknowledge 2009 with (two) ongoing wars; others threatening around the world; a global recession; a collapsing manufacturing sector; an incredible array of scammers, fiscal charlatans, opportunists and disgraced bureaucrats.

And, outside of that, how was the play, Mrs. Lincoln?

This month, Zeta Psi will conduct its Phi Leadership Conference at the Kirby Institute at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania.   I believe this Conference is very important, and will attend with IHQ staff and Elder volunteers.  Hopefully, I'll have a bit more upbeat report next month after the Conference.

But, Zeta Psi is certainly not isolated from our environment.  All constituents---actives, parents, staff, Elders-- will be challenged this year.  And, I believe, this presents us with both an opportunity and responsibility.

The deepening economic crises will make parents and their sons consider whether spending (now reduced) investment funds on particular tuitions, as opposed to more reasonable alternatives, worthwhile.  Those attending  a University at which we have chapters, will consider if the (perceived or real) expense of Greek membership is worth the expenditure.  Our existing actives, and officers, may well have to deal with undesirable financial situations as a result.

Those leaders will need to recognize these challenges, face them with leadership and sensitivity, and balance responsibilities and brotherhood concerns.  We all will.

I cannot think of a time more appropriate for Zeta Psi's leadership to support and guide it's active leaders to prepare for the difficult realities facing all of our actives, Elders, parents and others.

We like to tout our Leadership programs---LTI, Internships and scholarships, Phi Conference-as well we should.  Here is a time in which those programs will be tested; in which 19-20-21 year old men will need to make tough decisions for the benefit of their brothers and the fraternity; and, in which, we (Elders and IHQ) need to lead...so those actives can also.

Frankly, (in a nutshell) I cannot think of a more fundamental responsibility, and benefit, of our Zeta Psi experience than this Phi's conference. This is one reason I will be there.  And I hope all of us in the Zeta Psi family will support these men in the coming year.

It is what a brotherhood does.

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,

David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII
