This one, unfortunately, we lose...

YM House
When we began looking at buying a new house, we made some tough calls on what it would take for this to work, and one of those was setting a minimum number of Active Brothers in order to move ahead.  Last week, our Actives had a tough call of their own - whether to try and initiate guys they felt where unworthy or ONLY initiate those they knew would contribute to Zeta Psi, knowing that doing so would put them below the requirements for the house.  They made the right call, and only initiated the worthy men, and for that I am incredibly proud of our Actives.  Particularly impressive is that they are completely committed to moving forward and continuing the outstanding growth and achievement of the last 18 months.  Their continued commitment, in the face of adversity and disappointment, makes me proud to be a Zete.

Unfortunately, with less than 20 Brothers, we can't make this house work.  When we started collecting 'pledges', as opposed to donations, we did so knowing we might not hit all our milestones.  Given this news, we're NOT going to move forward to collect on the $25,000 in pledges we have right now.  BUT, we are going to move ahead with building our Chapter Fund for the next time we have this kind of opportunity, and I continue to ask for ALL OUR BROTHERS TO HELP!

Here's how:
1.  If you made a pledge before, please consider fulfilling that pledge or a portion of it ($50, $100, $250, or other) to claim the tax-deduction and/or your company match this tax year by CLICKING HERE.

2.  If you are willing to fulfill your pledge in 2009, please let me know and whether your whole pledge or what portion of it.

3.  If you haven't yet pledged but want to support this long term goal, please make a tax-deductible donation of $50, $100, $250 or more by CLICKING HERE.

4.  OR, you can create a simple $10, $20, or $25 per month auto-debit donation via PayPal by CLICKING HERE.  PayPal will automatically withdraw that small amount each month and email you a receipt, and you can cancel anytime.  This reduces the impact on your checkbook, but helps us grow our Chapter Fund year-after-year, and you'll still get tax deductibility on your total annual gift.

Even though this house is off the table (for now), we're going to need to buy one sometime, and by raising the money over the next few years we'll be ready when the time comes.  PLEASE join me as we aim for $25,000 in donations by Founder's Day (including the annualized value of auto-debit gifts).

Our actives made a tough call, but it was the right call, and as Elders we can still work TODAY to ensure our legacy for TOMORROW!

Always in Tau Kappa Phi, Dan Backer

...And this one we Win!

Brian McManus

YM's own Brian McManus, Mu Xi '99, appointed to Zeta Psi Educational Foundation Board of Trustees!

Snaps to Brian!  Brian pledged in the Fall of 1995 and was actively involved in our Chapter as Recruitment Chairman and Treasurer.  On campus, Brian was an RA for 2 years and was active in student government at a time when Zete's had a dominating presence and secured some $3,500 over 2 years in SGA funding.  After college, Brian graduated from Suffolk Law in Boston, class of '02, and received an LLM from Georgetown Law in '05.  While at Georgetown, Brian worked as an Attorney-Advisor at the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development where he uncovered and successfully litigated one of the largest land fraud cases in HUD's history.

In 2005, Brian joined the firm of Morgan Lewis & Bockius, one of the world's premiere law firms, in their tax and white collar criminal defense practice, where he continues today.  As an Elder, Brian has remained actively involved in Zeta Psi, particularly in the Zeta Psi DC Elders association and the Washington Scholar program.  Brian was recently announced as the incoming Chairman of the Future Leaders for America Foundation (FLFA), the 501(c)(3) that operates the highly regarded Washington Scholar's Fellowship Program, which has taken two YM Zetes in recent years.  In 2005, Brian worked with Admiral Carey (former Phi Alpha of Zeta Psi) to form the FLFA and has since served as Treasurer and Vice Chairman.

This summer, Brian married his long-time girlfriend Kelly Stevens in her hometown of Minneapolis and moved to Boston where Kelly is attending Harvard Business School.  Brian continues with Morgan Lewis in Boston and Washington.

Congratulations to our Chapter on Initiating our 400th Brother!YM logo2

Last Weekend, Zeta Psi initiated our 400th through 402nd Brother - abig milestone!  Here's an intro to each written by their Big Brothers!

Mitchell Harris Black, my first little brother, was initiated as Brother Pi Rho, was initiated into our Chapter as the 400th Brother of the Upsilon Mu.  Mitch is a freshman Communications major from Potomac, MD.  During his time as a pledge, Mitch took the initiative to help out the brothers in any way possible as well as always being willing to help out his pledge brothers when need be.  I foresee Mitch doing great things to help further the presence of the Upsilon Mu Chapter.  Always in Tau Kappa Phi, Corey League

I have known Esteban Thomas Pacheco for many years as we are both from Cambridge, MA.  I had always wanted him to pledge but he never really seemed interested until this year.  It was tough getting him to pledge but it was well worth it.  Esteban was always there to pick up the slack when others were down and his sense of humor really helped get the pledges through their demanding pledge semester.  He was one of the people that we wanted from the beginning and I am glad that he made it through until the end.  As Brother Pi Sigma, our 401st Initiate, he will be a great addition to our chapter of Zeta Psi.  Always in Tau Kappa Phi, Connor EpsteinKraus

James Frederick Staple, the pledge-class president, has been steadfast and studious in his pursuit of brotherhood.  Not only did he do what was asked of him without the slightest hesitation, but over the course of the semester he has become an important, respected, and proven member of our Circle. When the pledge semester became tumultuous and the less faithful began to trickle away, James acted as an anchor to unify and strengthen the bonds between the remaining pledges.  Earning the nickname "Sticky Fingers" in football, brimming with humor, disappearing with girls during parties, and dedicating himself to his duties, we are certain the next semester holds great things for James.  Hailing from Taunton, MA and pledging as the roommate of a Brother, we are happy to call James Brother Pi Tau, our 402nd Initiate in the Upsilon Mu Chapter.  Always in Tau Kappa Phi, Spencer Ross
