Cleveland 09

Excited for Convention 2009?  The most recent update is online at www.zetapsi2009.com where you can sign up to be on the email list which will remind you to register closer to convention time!  Convention 2009 is one you don't want to miss. Get excited, as the Convention Committee reports that the future looks very bright for a Convention that includes a Cleveland Indians home game, a trip to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a clam bake at the Nu chapter house that coincides with Cleveland's world famous Feast of the Assumption celebration!
We can pass the Collegiate Housing Infrastructure Act (CHIA) as part of the economic stimulus package - WITH YOUR HELP!

What is CHIA?  This law would make all donations to buy, build, or upgrade Chapter Houses TAX-DEDUCTIBLE.  This would lead to much easier fundraising and to more houses, better houses, better maintained houses, and safer houses to attract the best students.

Where is CHIA now?  CHIA had 211 bi-partisan sponsors in the House and 40 in the Senate, but was stymied when it's lead sponsor passed away (Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones of Ohio).  DC-based volunteers are lobbying to make CHIA part of the economic stimulus package based on the estimated $300 Million private dollars that would flow into depressed 'main street' builders at 800+ campuses nationwide over the next few years.  We've made real progress, but we need your involvement to cross the finish line.

Will CHIA help my Chapter?  YES!  Every Chapter either has a house or wants a house.  Passage of CHIA makes it much easier to raise money to renovate and improve houses or to buy and build new ones.  This keeps Zete competitive with students who want more than 4 walls and a crumbling ceiling to live in.

Does CHIA matter to me?  YES!  If you support your chapter's house, want to see it improved, or a new house bought, CHIA is critical!  It offers tax-deductible treatment for your donations, and will lead to more money flowing from all Elders to their Chapters for housing and therefore better houses with modern fire & life safety systems, energy-efficient heating and cooling, and more.

We need CHIA, and we need YOUR help to get it!  Here's what you can do in 5 minutes to make a BIG difference:

Make 3 phone calls.  We need you to call your Congressman & Senators to ask them to push their leadership to include CHIA in the stimulus bill.  For info on your Rep.'s, email dbacker@zetapsi.org to see where they stand and what the 'message' is (we've got great talking points for you).

Go online. Use the FaceBook App. at http://www.cfcfacebook.com or the CFC site at http://www.fraternalcaucus.org

Be your Active/Elder Chapter's GRC.  We need many more Actives & Elders to represent their Chapters as Government Relations Chairmen to help lead our efforts nationwide.  This is a small time commitment but very important.  Email dbacker@zetapsi.org for info.

What about Canada?  While CHIA only effects US houses, chapters, and elders, this can be a model for similar efforts in Canada, where Zete's continued dominance may depend on our ability to maintain, improve or acquire houses.

Zete Gatherings

I am continually impressed by the dedication and involvement of Elder Zetes at local chapter events.  I just returned from my eighth Commemoration Dinner at the Theta Xi in Toronto and that event brings together not just the 140 Zetes that attend the dinner, but another 40 to 60 that come for the overall experience.  Being at chapter events like Commemoration are special for Zetes.  You can feel the camaraderie and brotherhood.  I experienced the same feeling at the Upsilon 150th Celebration, the Alpha Psi Commemoration, two Iota Banquets, the Alpha Mu 10th Celebrations, the Iota Alpha Celebrations, the Sigma Annual Dinner, two Phi Chapter Black and Gold Dinners, five recent chapter installations, and countless conventions, LTIs and Regional Elder events.

In the next month I expect to enjoy more Zete brotherhood with the 40th Anniversary of the Pi Kappa at Bloomsburg on November 15th, the Houston RAC on December 3rd and the New York RAC on December 10th.

I hope all of you get the opportunity to enjoy Zete brotherhood events throughout your Zete career.  We'll be expanding the RACs to more cities and many individual chapters have either annual or anniversary events.  Please try and attend and share.

Internship Updates

Summer '09 Deadlines are approaching.  If you are interested in applying for any of Zete's outstanding internship program, CLICK HERE.  Good luck to all applicants; these are truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

WSS - Last call for business contacts in NYC
Thank you to all Zetes who offered contact info for friends and colleagues in the NYC area as we work to finalize our internship positions for Summer 2009.  The Wall Street Scholars is actively recruiting new companies seeking motivated, enthusiastic interns for next summer.  Interns in the Wall Street Scholars receive numerous networking and career-building opportunities outside of the summer internship and go through several rounds of interviewing before the selection process concludes.  Past employers of WSS Interns have valued the impressive background and hard-work ethic that each scholar has brought to the table.  The program provides the interns with housing, and a living stipend at zero cost to an employer.  If your company or employer regularly hires interns for the summer or wants to hire one for Summer 2009 - contact us!  Or, if you have a connection in NYC that might employ a Zeta Psi intern - contact us so we can be in touch with them.  Email Adam Zandan at adam.zandan@draka.com  with any inquiries, recommendations, or contacts to expand the Wall Street Scholars.
Congratulations to our Fall 2008 Scholarship Recipients - Over 50 Brothers receiving $30,000.

Busacca 2008

Now what do we do with all those pennies?

Anyone in a business environment (or a political one) knows what a lobbyist is, but the opinions of why a lobbyist is needed vary by point of view.

A lobbyist is hired by an organization to provide accurate facts, support analysis, and expose others to positive impact of their organizations.  The belief is that those "outside of their arena" may not have the "full picture" with which to make intelligent decisions regarding purchases, competitive claims, political impact and consumer preferences.

A less cynical view of that definition suggests that lobbying is needed, benefits the specific participants and society in general, and provides unique information that likely otherwise would be ignored, allowing others to make better, more informed and beneficial decisions.

Sound familiar?

It is what Greeks do every day...if they understand their true relationship.  As we've established, society makes decisions, often, based on generalities, clichés, and misconceptions.  Nowhere is that more prevalent than in the Greek system.

We've established that a great deal of public perception of Greeks is tainted by these misconceptions.  What would a business do? Get a good lobbyist to "tell the whole story."

Brothers---you are that lobbyist.

Every one of us, and no more so than active brothers, need to be conscious of our "bad press" and seek to inform---prospects, parents, University administrators, Elders, press---of the "correct", positive facts.

Recruiting should emphasis the real purpose of fraternity, i.e. the lifelong brotherhood, Greek association's contribution to business success, political involvement, strong academic achievements.

That freshman prospect already has his "preconceptions" about Greek life regarding drinking and partying.  Society's Animal House glasses are still working fine!  But today he, and the authorities to whom we are subject, also are concerned about the "real" purposes of college.  They might not ask initially, given peer pressures to be cool, but they, and their parents, want to know about the chapter's academic policy, GPA requirements, study programs, leadership training and encouragement, interpersonal development. And we have ALL that and more!  Do not be afraid to sell those aspects of fraternity.  We all need to change those generalities to positive specifics.  We need to be our own lobbyists to the world.

At the end of the day, it is the only way to change preconceptions from Animal House, to a lifelong personal commitment to mentor, develop, teach, and grow successful, thoughtful and engaged young men.

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
