New School Year is  Upon Us!

Templeton2Fellow Zetes, a new school year is upon us.  Fall is always an exciting time as our undergraduates return to campus.  Fall 2008 should be especially exciting for Zeta Psi.  We've just finished a hugely successful 161st Annual Convention in Montreal.  We also have our Canadian Development Director, Ruben Vina-Garica, Theta Xi, 08 onboard and ready to storm Canadian supporting our existing chapters, building the Brock Colony, and hopefully planting the Zete flag at new schools.

As we plan for the support of Canadian Chapters we'll emphasize rebuilding the Pi Epsilon Chapter at Manitoba, continue the rebuilding of the Alpha Theta Chapter at Waterloo, provide real recruitment help at Mu Theta in Alberta and Alpha Psi at McGill, and support the Theta Ix at Toronto and Tau Theta at Oshawa.  The Theta Phi Chapter at Western Ontario has been suspended by the Elders and so we'll start the planning process with those Elders to quickly return the chapter to active status.

We've been losing Canadian Chapters over the past few years.  That stops now!  We're at six active chapters and that is not acceptable.  In the next two years we must work together to return to Western Ontario, Calgary, and Dalhousie.  We must continue progressing at Brock and look to establish groups at other fine schools.  Let's all commit to a goal of ten Canadian Chapters when we meet in New Orleans in 2010!

 New Canadian Development Director

I would like to introduce myself, Ruben Vina-Garcia (Theta Xi '08) as the new Canadian Development Director. This fall I will be visiting chapters and interest groups all over Canada. We are looking to strengthen our current chapters and start strong new chapters at Zete worthy institutions.

Currently we're looking at very exciting opportunities all across the map. With the Waterloo restart complete and the Brock restart well underway I'll be looking for increased elders living in that area for continued support. I'll touch down in Winnipeg in mid- to late September. I am looking to give the Pi Epsilon a major recruitment boost. Mu Theta in Edmonton will also be receiving a lot of attention in the upcoming term. I will also be visiting groups in Halifax, Guelph, Windsor and Ottawa. I'll be hosting numerous recruiting events in these areas, so don't be shy to come out and support these new guys carrying the torch into the future.

I call on the brothers to assist me on my travels. If you know of any Zete-worthy young men in university or want to involved in Zete related activities in your area, feel free to drop me an email.

Active Chapter Updates

Theta Xi (The University of Toronto)
The momentum is at an all time high at Theta Xi!  Preparations for the active year are in full swing and are being motivated due to our amazing rally in Montreal, where we received the Comstock Award for outstanding chapter in Zeta Psi.  I would like to extend an invitation to all chapters to join us in the coming festivities, as our calendar is packed with great events and traditions.  Again, Theta Xi will make it a top priority to road trip around the north east and southern United States . Lastly, the culmination of all mentioned above occurs during our Commemoration ceremony and dinner during the Remembrance Day weekend, in which we celebrate those from Theta Xi who have fallen for us during the Great World Wars. Lets make this a great year Canada wide, and strengthen the bonds of Brotherhood north of the border. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Alpha Psi (Mcgill University)
The brothers of Alpha Psi were honored and proud to host the recent Annual Convention in Montreal. It was a fun, educational, and historic experience for all those active brothers in attendance; we cannot thank the IHQ staff, the Convention Committee, and all of the other Zetes (and families) involved enough for making this one of the most memorable Conventions ever! The brothers of Alpha Psi have recently moved, and now live only a block from campus. We are looking forward to a very successful year in our new location, and invite all those who wish to visit to please come along.

Tau Theta (The University of Ontario)
The brothers of Tau Theta are extremely excited about the upcoming school year. We are happy to report that we have a new chapter house in Oshawa, a short distance from our previous location and a short walk from the school. Last year, we welcomed 10 worthy brothers into our circle and we hope to surpass that this year with the help of this new and improved house. While we continue to welcome new brothers into our circle, we are sad to part with the last of our Alpha class, the worthy brothers who founded our chapter. We now have a solid foundation for our elder association as they are just as excited about Zeta Psi as the day they formed our colony. The combination of this with the eager new leaders of our active chapter will ensure continued excellence and overall chapter development.

Mu Theta (University of Alberta)
Hello from the West!  We're gearing up for a busy fall at Mu Theta.  With only six actives, we have a few obstacles to overcome, but are none the less excited for what a new year will bring.  After rush practice sessions throughout the summer, as well as attending convention, we feel more than ready for any challenges.  Our summer included some house renovations in the main floor bedroom, nights around the fire in the backyard, and an informal exchange with a sorority.  We're still waiting to hear on the appeal process after losing our battle to obtain fraternity zoning.  Hopefully we'll be able to post our letters on our house soon enough.  Plans for the fall include the Delta Gamma hosted Anchorsplash, the largest Greek fundraiser on campus, as well as numerous BBQs hosted in efforts to raise money for Zete Kidz.

Alpha Theta (University of Waterloo)
This fall promises to be monumental for the Alpha Theta chapter. Having influence on 2 local campuses will not only strengthen our numbers, but double our fundraising, volunteer, and event capabilities.

To follow up the Homecoming celebrations, we have numerous events planned for the fall months including "Zeta Psi Presents: Car Smash for Kids", the "Retro Hawk Fashion Show", and "Zete-toberfest".
With continuing support from already established chapters and IHQ, we strongly believe our chapter will become synonomous with leadership and excellence across both campuses very quickly, and we are looking forward to strengthening the legacy of Zeta Psi.

From the President's Desk
Canadian Educational Foundation of Zeta Psi

Brothers,

It is with great excitement that I write my first article for the Canadian Quarterly from the Desk of the President of the Canadian Educational Foundation of Zeta Psi.  With a renewed energy for the foundation and some new blood added for the upcoming school year we hope to provide some great fundraising results for our undergraduate members to benefit from.  With new fundraising committee members, Chris Reid(East), Brandon Gurley(East), and Tim Desroches(West), we hope to increase our presence and our donor base moving forward.  These young, energetic and accomplished young elders are excited to plan and coordinate events with our local and regional elders associations to not only bring brother's together to reunite; but also to donate to a worthy cause to perpetuate our noble order. Some of these events could be things like a scotch tasting, wine tasting and education, cigar exhibitions, golf tournaments, and a great many more events.  Keep you calendars open and watch for these events. Why not reunite with your classmates at special events.

A very important deadline is fast approaching for our scholarship applications for current undergraduate members.  This deadline is October 31/08.  The awards range from $100-$1000 dollars with special awards for the James H. MacLaughlin memorial scholarship, Richard E. Parr Scholarship, and a few other special award that are available.  Please consult the zeta psi website.

An Introduction from Our New Phi Alpha

This is my first "official" welcome to Canadian brothers.  While I have been a Zete and a Board member, I've met and worked with many Canadian brothers.  And even though they talk funny, they are pretty much like "normal" people!

Seriously, we often dismiss the significance of our International character.  Some of it is the "geocentric" view of America, but much more, I believe, is the history of Canada and America.

While we are different sovereign nations, our beginnings were from some of the same origins.  We speak the same language (more or less) and have similar democratic world views.  In fact, for America and Zeta Psi, we probably simply take Canada for "granted", in the same way old friends or spouses do---not out of disregard, but confident in our mutual acceptance and trust.  But as many of you have heard from your spouses---"it doesn't hurt to tell me occasionally I matter to you."

For some of us (living in the Detroit area, I am half an hour from the border), Canada is just another local area, albeit, one with a passport requirement.  Upon reflection, however, the amazing vision and enormous commitment our earlier brothers and leaders displayed in expanding our circle to another country is quite extraordinary.

We forget the differences in travel accessibility then and now; the fairly insular mindset of a young America, seeking to expand to its own borders; and, the simple logistic issues that would have to be overcome.

Today, we accept the international, intercontinental, even global, character of corporations as a given.  A product wholly produced within one country with only native labor and content is a rarity, rather than the norm.  Many of us work for multi-national companies; readily and regularly traveling across national borders to "standardize" our processes, while still recognizing the synergy different locations bring to an issue.

Zeta Psi has been doing that for a hundred years!  Something to be said for being ahead of the curve!

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII
