2008-2009 Leadership Training
Continuing our Success!

The Fall 2008 LTI sessions have seen over 180 brothers from 15 chapters at 3 campuses.  We are ready to continue this success into the Spring of 2009 with a huge kick off at the Kirby Family Foundation Future Leaders Conference in January. All undergraduate Phi's are expected to participate and we look forward to an amazing event.

We encourage all Active Brothers - and any interested Elders - to review the Zeta Psi website, check the dates, and attend.

The Membership Development Committee has built new coursework based off Active feedback to teach skills for both undergraduate and Elder members.  This programming has already taken Zeta Psi to the forefront of fraternal leadership training and this will soon expand into our online Learning Management System.  If you have any questions please contact Anthony Shibata at ashibata@zetapsi.org or CLICK HERE to visit our LTI page.

Fall Recruitment looks good!

Initial recruitment numbers for the Fall 2008 period look strong.  With half of our chapters reporting we stand at 232 new members.  This points towards over 350 fall new members.  Our goal for the year is to once again exceed 600 initiates (we had 605 last year) so we're right on target.

Special recognition goes to chapters with exceptionally strong number: Omicron (Neb Wes) with 29, Phi Lambda (Wash) with 26, Eta (Yale) with 20, Iota (Cal) and Xi (MI) with 18 each, and Rho Alpha (MIT) and Theta (UConn) with 15 each.  Also of note, our interest group at Brock University is at 26 members.

Recruitment is by far the lifeblood of our chapters.  Chapters embracing a planned out recruitment process with full active member involvement are reaping huge rewards.  The compelling results come from both established chapters and chapters that have struggled in the past.  Every chapter can succeed with recruitment as long as they embrace the process and follow a plan.  If your chapter does not have a plan Zeta Psi does and can help you implement that plan.  It has worked at every chapter that commits to it!

Internship Updates

All-volunteer Leadership makes our program succeed!

Sam Soicet leads Zete's Northwestern Mutual Financial Network (NMFN) program:
Sam Soichet, the new program coordinator for Zete's NMFN Internship, is a Michigan alumnus who refounded the Xi Chapter in 2004-2005.  Along with his fellow brothers, Sam established a thriving chapter, which currently boasts near fifty active members.  While at Michigan, Sam double majored in Applied Mathematics and Italian.  During his summers he worked for an AMEX based hedge fund on Wall Street until his senior year when he began his internship at Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.   Sam saved himself from the current credit crunch by becoming an IT Consultant.  He currently works for Citrix Systems and is based out of Chicago.  Sam hopes to see the NMFN internship program and its membership grow.  He encourages all Zetes to participate in the future development of the program and thanks Zeta Psi for its support.

WSFP squareWSFP - Washington Scholars:
The Washington Scholars would like all Zetes to know about a great database for paid federal internships here in DC.  CLICK HERE for the Federal Student Employment Programs.

Brothers accepted into a paid federal internship in DC are encouraged to apply for the Washington Scholars.  If accepted, you will enjoy all the benefits of the WSFP program and be provided with housing if needed.

WSFP applications are being accepted for spring 2009 and are due Nov. 1st, 2008.  Summer 2009 applications are also being accepted and are due January 15th, 2009.  More information and applications can be found at www.washingtonscholars.org

Good luck to all of the applicants; this truly is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
GOVERNMENT RELATIONS UPDATE

Active/Elder Chapter Government Relations Chairmen needed:
As part of our ongoing efforts with the Capitol Fraternal Caucus (CFC) and Fraternity & Sorority Political Action Committee (FSPAC), we're launching a Zete Government Relations Chairman (GRC) initiative.  We're asking EVERY Active & Elder Chapter to select at least 1 GRC to help coordinate this effort.

How Active & Elder GRC's will help:
1.  Help shape the agenda for us and the entire Greek Govt. Relations effort.
2.  Develop networks of Actives & Elders to advance our legislative goals.
3.  Seek letters of support from University Presidents for new laws.
4.  Coordinating on-campus efforts with other Greeks and Greek Alumni.
5.  Work with Actives & Elders to contact their Congressman and Senators.
6.  Get Actives & Elders involved via online letter writing and petition tools, including FaceBook.

We'll offer special benefits when we can, including recognition in the UpZete, Circle, and Convention.  This month, we have a GRC dial-in to an audio-conference on effective Grass Roots organizing - a real value to anyone interested in this area.

If you would like to be your Active or Elder Chapter's GRC, contact your Active/Elder Phi or email dbacker@zetapsi.org for more info.

Nearly $4000 pledged to FSPAC:
More than 100 Zete Actives & Elders have pledged $25 or more to FSPAC, which supports Greek & Greek-friendly candidates for office who share our values and goals.  THANK YOU ALL for your support - in time, talent, or treasure - to this vital effort!

5 ways YOU can help in 5 minutes:
1.  Download the CFC FaceBook application, sign the petition and show your support for CHIA at
www.cfcfacebook.com.
2.  Don't use FaceBook?  Register at the CFC website to use their letter writing tool, at

A Penny Saved...Busacca 2008

Generalities, clichés and stereotypes...every culture, organization and community has them and many of these cross organizations.  The fraternity system has its own share of these that in many cases present "barriers" to our operation.

Probably the single, seminal event of 20th Century fraternity stereotypes was National Lampoon's 1978 Animal House. In one single cosmic event, the hippies of the 60s, the free lover 70s & 80s, much of the Greek system itself, and, even the "silent majority"-- all, had in one place, the quintessential "Wikipedia" of fraternity knowledge.

We are still trying to turn that one around!  In fact, Wikipedia notes "In 2001, the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry."

There is nothing wrong with satire and comedy as art forms.  Part of their success depends on a base of truth extruded to it's irrationally humors end.  Animal House had all that.

Let's look at some of the more germane dialogue:
[Watching Flounder take abuse at ROTC]
Otter: He can't do that do that to our pledges.
Boon: Only we can do that to our pledges.

Otter: Flounder, I am appointing you pledge representative to the social committee.
Flounder: Gee Otter, thanks. What do I have to do?
Otter: It means you have to drive us to the Food King.

Dean Vernon Wormer: Zero point two... Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son. Mr. Hoover, president of Delta house? One point six; four C's and an F. A fine example you set! Daniel Simpson Day...HAS no grade point average. All courses incomplete. Mr. Blu - MR. BLUTARSKY...ZERO POINT ZERO.

Everyone reading this has probably seen the movie, at least once, 50% chance at your chapter, and are laughing at the memories of each of these scenes in the movie!

Truth, taken to its absurd extension, is satire; some truth, expanded to cover all members of a class, is stereotype.  And, we, gentlemen and brothers, (for most of the non-Greek world) are stereotypes!

Any of us can produce the litany of Greek "truths"-all we do is drink and party; nobody pays attention to academics; misogynist exploitation is the norm; pledges are hazed, demeaned and browbeaten at will.

Regardless of the facts, that none of those are acceptable today; that Greeks continuously over  time have excelled as leaders, academics, and philanthropists; that no organization, Greek or otherwise, could exist with those characteristics in today's litigious society---it is still the first subliminal image that prospects, parents and administrators view in their mind's eye.

How does this relate to our rush and pledging practices today?  Directly!

Our "rolling rush" program emphasizes meeting and developing a friendship with a prospect initially.  Our International policies prohibit hazing of any sort and our discipline process has dealt with those exceptions.  Academics are emphasized, as is philanthropy, for individual and fraternal success.

WE now that an 18 year old candidate that joins Zeta Psi will enhance his college experience, connect to brothers and elders in a way he has never before experienced, and succeed at school and the "real world" because of his Greek experiences.  But THEY don't know that!

Our single biggest responsibility as Elders is to ensure our chapters, their parents, and educators all understand that a significant amount of their Greek "knowledge" is being filtered through Animal House's prism.  We must emphasize the positive, successful, developmental enhancements that a Greek experience can, and does, bring to those who truly embrace it for its breadth of influence.

It is all of our responsibility, and no more so than with the active officers of our chapters to which each of us has a continuing commitment, to limit the adverse stereotypes to the screen.  And to promote and conduct the very positive, life changing reality that is a Greek experience today, and Zeta Psi's in particular.

How do we ensure that?  I'd tell you but I am already over the editorial limit!  Next time!

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII
