GOVERNMENT RELATIONS UPDATE

CHIA - our primary goal - near passing:
CHIA, the Collegiate Housing Infrastructure Act (HR 643/S 638), now has 210 Sponsors in the House and 40 in the Senate - very close to a majority!  There is a very real possibility that this vital legislation will pass this year, and we need your help to make that happen!

CHIA would allow 501(c)3 charities like Zeta Psi Educational Foundation to raise and expend tax-deductible donations to help upgrade, buy, or build Chapter houses.  This offers tax-parity with University housing and leads to safe, modern, and affordable student housing for all Greeks - and a significant benefit to ALL our chapters!

Zetes pledge over $3000 to support the Fraternity & Sorority PAC:
During the convention, more than 100 Zete Actives & Elders came together and pledged $25 each or more to FSPAC, which supports Greek & Greek-friendly candidates for office who share our values and goals.  This is a big achievement - THANK YOU TO THOSE ZETES WHO PLEDGED!

HOW YOU CAN HELP IN JUST 5 MINUTES:
1.  Download the CFC FaceBook application to sign the online petition and show your support for this legislation.  CLICK HERE or go to www.cfcfacebook.com.

3.  Have political connections or personal relationships that can help us secure passage of CHIA?  LET US KNOW!  Contact Dan Backer at 202-210-5431 or dbacker@zetapsi.org.
4.  Learn more about the Fraternity & Sorority Political Action Committee and help support Greek & 'friendly' candidates for office!  CLICK HERE or go to www.fratpac.org to donate to FSPAC (please be sure to email dbacker@zetapsi.org when you do so we can properly track all our donations!)

We have never had as good an opportunity to pass CHIA as right now.  Please lend your support - in time, talent, or treasure - to this vital effort!

SCHOOL BEGINS

As September approaches our undergraduates pack up and head back to school.  Come next week most all of our representative universities will begin classes and the school year will once again be underway.  As fall begins let's all remember the reason we go to college - to get a degree and prepare for adult life.  Academics always come first!

For Zeta Psi falls means we begin our life-cycle of recruiting new members.  Chapters that recruit successfully do so because they have a plan and because all the active members participate.  If everyone helps recruit your chapter and Zeta Psi will thrive.

Chapters also thrive when supported by an active Elder group.  Elder Zetes, stop by the house when on campus, interact with the undergrads, and show them you care and that Zeta Psi is important to you.  All of us can help make Zeta Psi great!  Enjoy the fall.

Summer 2008 Internship Wrap-up

UPDATES FROM OUR INTERNS!

WSS - Wall Street Scholars:
The WSS is proud to congratulate the Summer Intern Class of 2008 on successful completion of the program.  Andrew Richards, Alpha Psi chapter, and Joey Song, Pi Sigma chapter, worked in New York City this past summer for the Independent Film Channel and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (respectively).  Each had unique opportunities to experience the New York City working environment and took on numerous responsibilities within their positions, including working with different types of media, preparing press releases, updating websites, judging film entries, working on photo shoots, participating in strategy discussions, and much more.  Additionally, the two scholars had numerous opportunities to practice their networking skills and get to know Zetes in the NYC area.

Elders - can you help place a WSS intern next Summer?  Contact Adam Zandan at
adam.zandan@draka.com to find out how to get involved.

WSFP squareWSFP - Washington Scholars:
The Washington Scholars management team is proud to announce that on August 1, 2008, twenty seven interns graduated from the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program.  Each member of this graduating class, the largest to date, has worked for the previous three months in an internship at some of the most prestigious private organizations and powerful government branches.  These internships have provided the graduates with excellent career building and educational opportunities.  The Washington Scholars management team wishes them the best of luck in their future pursuit of careers in the public policy sector.

The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program offers the opportunity to work side by side with the nation's top policy makers and to learn how our government works.  This program is geared towards politically minded individuals, and provides knowledge, experience, and a broad network of professional contacts throughout our nation's capital.  A recent survey released by the Council for Excellence in Government, in partnership with Gallup, found that a significant share of Millenials (18-29 year olds) would give a great deal of consideration to working in public service if asked by their parents (33%), the newly elected President in 2008 (29%), or a teacher or professor (27%).  There is no better time to consider working for the government considering in the next few years 50% of federal government employees will be eligible to retire.  The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program can be your chance to start a fulfilling career in public policy.

Applications are now being accepted for spring 2009 and are due by October 30th, 2008.  Information and applications can be found at
www.washingtonscholars.org.

NEXT MONTH: MORE NEWS ON ZETE'S SCIENCE & ENGINEERING LEADERSHIP FELLOWS (SELF) AND NORTHWESTERN MUTUAL INTERNSHIP (NMFN).
How YOU can help Zeta Psi expand!
Each Fall, Zeta Psi looks at opportunities to expand to the best, Zete-Worthy, colleges and Universities - HERE IS HOW YOU CAN HELP US DO SO:

1.  This Fall, we are targeting schools in Washington, DC (GW, GMU, & American) and Georgia (Emory & Georgia Tech) for particular attention.  If you have any family or friends or the neighbors kid or the paperboy attending schools in those areas, and they may be Zete material - PLEASE LET US KNOW!
2.  If you know someone going to another Zete-worthy school anywhere in the US, Canada, or abroad, let us know - It only takes a few of the right guys to take expansion on a new campus from idea to reality!!
3.  If you live near any of our target areas, and would be willing to help out as a mentor (about an hour a week), please let us know!

For more information on Expansion, please email Dave Hunter at exec.dir@zetapsi.org.

ZeteKidzThe silent auction at the Montreal Convention raised approximately $3300 for ZeteKidz to supplement the efforts of the chapters.  The ZeteKidz USA board thanks to all of those who donated the items, and those who bid on them.

Busacca 2008Introducing our new Phi Alpha - David W. Busacca

You know, I really didn't plan it like this.  I mean, who would, right?  McElroy has been "Mr. Zeta Psi" for, like, a zillion years!  So, who would want to follow that!?

Well, it wasn't exactly the plan, but circumstances formed and I agreed to "step up" as Greg's Alpha Phi Alpha.  At the 161st Zeta Psi Convention in beautiful Montreal, I was honored to be elected to succeed Greg as Phi Alpha.

It's not like I don't know Greg.  In fact, I probably know him longer than most.

In the 70's, at the height of the Vietnam War, fraternities (and all establishment icons) were very out of favor.  Many chapters were having difficulty recruiting, and some were closing.  This occurred at Lehigh University as well.  Virtually all 35+ fraternities were on University property in University-Alumni developed housing.  Needless to say, this was an investment and a cash flow the University wanted to protect.

Part of the "solution" by the University was to allow a non-affiliated group to "take over" the failing chapter affiliation, if approved by their nationals. In 1970, one such group moved to "reactivate" the Pi Lambda Phi chapter.  In 1972, a different local "fraternity" group at Lehigh University was offered the Tau Delta Phi chapter house.  In graduate school at this point, I was one of the "charter" members to agree and moved into the house in September of 1972.

As is often the case, nothing goes smoothly!  After discussion and investigation of Tau Delta Phi's national office, we decided not to join them and began the search for a new national.  That's how I met Greg.

I believe he was in his second year with the IHQ as Executive Director.  He, and  the expansion chairman, Jay Rothberg (Past Phi Alpha) came down for a meeting.  When I met them the first thing I thought was.."Gees, these guys are my age! (Greg is one year older than I.) How solid is THIS national?"

Obviously we were sufficiently impressed and in May 1973, 44 guys were initiated into Zeta Psi at the Tau (Lafayette) Chapter house.  I graduated in June and became the Elder Phi.

Over the years, I continued some contact with Zeta Psi, always through Greg (as practically the only person I knew at IHQ).  That association and interest developed through the years as an Elder Chapter advisor; committee work; eventually election to the Foundation and Fraternity Boards.  When asked if I would be interested in becoming an officer, I demurred, as my work at Chrysler as Manager of Consumer Litigation for North America was rather time consuming.  But when I was able to take an early retirement in 2006, it seemed the right time.  But I did not plan on following Greg!

Sort of like a guy saying he's going to get one more gold medal than Marc Spitz!  No one's ever done that, but someone finally did.  I don't plan to "one-up" Greg.  I am just hoping I can do a comparable job that leaves the wood pile a little bit higher-something I learned about commitment 35 years ago from a tall blonde guy one year older than me.

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
David W. Busacca, Phi Alpha CXXXII
