Summer 2008 Internship Updates
UPDATES FROM OUR INTERNS!
SELF - Science & Engineering Leadership Fellows:
Being an undergraduate student in your junior/senior year is often a catch-22 situation: you need more experience to have a job, and you need that job to get more experience. Fortunately through the Zeta Psi Science & Engineering Leadership Fellows (SELF) program, we Zetes are fortunate to have that experience. I started work less than a week ago doing research at the Washington University at St. Louis Med School for Brother/Dr. Parag Parikh, of the Nu/Case Western Chapter. Dr. Parikh has me working on two different projects - both of which require me to use skills from the biology classes I've taken at UCLA, as well as the engineering classes. The first project is to create a prototype design from the ground up. The prototype will be used to enhance the accuracy of CAT/MRI scans as they are used in tumor identification in the head and neck area. The second project relates to tracking tumors growth/shrinkage within lungs of patients by using transponders surgically placed on the tumors. For those not so scientifically versed - the projects are both extremely exciting. The first offers a tool to the research community which would save time and space. The second is a technique which would give doctors more accurate and up-to-date information about patients' tumors, helping doctors fight tumors more accurately. The experience of creating a products' design from the ground up is exciting and invigorating. Hopefully, by the end of the summer, we'll know exactly how our prototype should be built - and parts will be on the way. I look forward to the rest of summer and my 9 more weeks here working on these projects. Who knows - maybe years from now - the things that I help to create will be helping to cure cancer. -Raahul Srinivasaan UCLA/Sigma Zeta '09
WSS - Wall Street Scholars:
"My name is Joey Song and I am currently interning at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants - as part of Zeta Psi's Wall Street Scholars Program. After a great kick-off dinner in New York City, I immediately started work in the Communications Department at the AICPA. So far, the experience has been incredible and the Wall Street Scholars Program is working hard to make sure that I get the most unique internship experience possible. To read more about my experiences at the AICPA, check out my blog at http://www.wssjoey.blogspot.com/
Or, to read about Wall Street Scholar Andrew Richards' summer experience, check out his blog at - http://wallstreetscholarsifc.blogspot.com/. Andrew is from the Alpha Psi chapter and is interning at the Independent Film Channel.
WSFP - Washington Scholars:
For the past month and a half the Washington Scholars Fellowship Program Summer 2008 interns have been diligently working at their respective internships and learning invaluable lessons about our nation's government. This class has been provided with many amazing opportunities outside of their internships, including seminars at the Leadership Institute, meetings with the Capital Fraternal Caucus, and the National Debutante Cotillion's DUB Ball. At this year's DUB Ball, a precursor to the National Debutante Cotillion and Thanksgiving Ball, we had over 50 Zetes & dates in attendance, including the majority of the Washington Scholar interns. We also had three brothers who had the honor of being "Dubs" this year, Chris Bond, Jason Murphy, and Lt. Will Brooks. This yearly event is always one of the highlights of the summer internship. Also this summer the interns will be attending the Public Service Career Fair and will be touring the National Transportation Safety Board's lab and TWA Flight 800 wreckage investigation. Also, the Washington Scholars have been invited to the annual Summer Reception held by the Zeta Psi DC Elder Association. The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program affords undergraduate students the opportunity to work side by side with the nation's top policy makers and to learn how our government works. This program is geared towards politically minded individuals, and provides knowledge, experience, and a broad network of professional contacts throughout our nation's capital. Interested in taking part in this invaluable internship opportunity? Applications are now being accepted for spring internships and are due by October 30th. More information and internship applications can be found at www.washingtonscholars.org

NMFN - Northwestern Mutual Program:
So far my experience with The Jamrog Group of Northwestern Mutual in Northampton has been quite eye opening. I have been put in charge of basically my own financial services business and am spending my days doing exactly what all other financial representatives do on a daily basis. I cannot stress how this changes the perception of what an internship should be. I work 9-5 seeing clients or fighting to see clients, and my schedule fluctuates to what I want to do. I believe that this internship has changed my perception on financial services and what exactly happens in the business world. The fact that I am put into a position where I am basically given the chance to make as much money as I want, work when it's comfortable to me, and most importantly I am making an impact on people's lives at the age of 19. I work in a great office with an enthusiastic and fun staff in the middle of one of the most cultured and beautiful cities in western Massachusetts and even though it is difficult for me to get as many clients as I would like, I still feel that I am on cloud 9 when it comes to the experience as a whole. Without the Zeta Psi NMFN Enhancement Program it is highly unlikely that I'd be in this position this summer. With convention coming up in a month, I am anxious to tell every Zete to take full advantage of what Zeta Psi has to offer through this Program. Granted, it has not been too easy, but it has been an immersion into a business and a culture that I am seriously considering doing for the rest of my life, and I really owe it to Zeta Psi for putting me in a position to be with this company this early in my career. ALUMNI ACADEMY
This year at the convention in Montreal the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation will host the Alan Rice Alumni Academy. We have invited representatives from each Elder Association. Our goal is to provide a forum for discussion and solutions to real-life issues facing our Elder Associations. We plan on presenting seminars on chapter relations, house management, alumni involvement, association organization, plus other pertinent topics. Our goal with the academy is two-fold: improve our Elder Associations and increase Elder representation at conventions. Realizing convention travel can a challenge both time-wise and financially the academy will be scheduled Thursday afternoon and Friday of convention and the hotel room cost and the convention fee will be subsidized by the foundation. Time is getting short so if you're an Elder officer and might be able to attend please contact us at IHQ. Special thanks to Alan Rice for his guidance and support of this effort! I'll see you in Montreal!

GREEK LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
STATUS: The Collegiate Housing Infrastructure Act or CHIA (HR 643/S 638), our primary legislative goal, now has 206 Sponsors in the House and 38 in the Senate - the most ever! There is a very real possibility that this vital legislation will pass this year, and you can help make that happen! HOW YOU CAN HELP IN JUST 5 MINUTES: 1. Download the CFC FaceBook application to sign the online petition and show your support for this legislation. CLICK HERE or go to www.cfcfacebook.com. 2. Don't have/use FaceBook? Register at the CFC website to use their letter writing tool - CLICK HERE or go to www.fraternalcaucus.org. 3. Have political connections or personal relationships that can help us secure passage of CHIA? LET US KNOW! Contact Dan Backer at 202-210-5431 or dbacker@zetapsi.org. 4. Learn more about the Fraternity & Sorority Political Action Committee and help support Greek & 'friendly' candidates for office! CLICK HERE or go to www.fratpac.org. We have never had as good an opportunity to pass CHIA as right now. Please lend your support - in time, talent, or treasure - to this vital effort! CHIA would allow 501(c)3 charities like the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation raise and expend tax-deductible donations as grants to help upgrade existing Chapter houses or build new ones. This will provide tax-parity with University housing and lead to safe, modern, and affordable student housing for all Greeks.

ZETEKIDZ UPDATE & AUCTION
The ZeteKidz USA board has been busy collecting all sorts of Zete-related items this year. There will be a ZeteKidz auction at the Montreal convention - the largest auction with the most great stuff yet - and we expect that these additions to the usual selection of great items and packages will be more popular than ever. We will post some interesting items on the website for you to ponder before the convention begins August 13. We'll put them up as Buy-it-now items, so if you just have to have something, but won't be in Montreal, you'll have the chance to grab it. Please remember to stop by http://kids.zetapsi.org/ in August to see what we have.

Brother Sir John Templeton, Eta '34, joins the Chapter Eternal Renowned financier and Philanthropist
Sir John M. Templeton, a Tennessee-born investor and philanthropist who amassed a fortune in global stocks and gave away hundreds of millions of dollars to foster understanding in what he called "spiritual realities," died on July 8th in Nassau, the Bahamas, where he had lived for decades. He was 95. In a career that spanned seven decades, Sir John dazzled Wall Street, organized some of the most successful mutual funds of his time, led investors into foreign markets, established charities that now give away $70 million a year, wrote books on finance and spirituality and promoted a search for answers to what he called the "Big Questions" - realms of science, faith, God and the purpose of humanity.
In 1987, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his tremendous philanthropy. Among his many Philanthropic gifts was the 1984 endowment of Templeton College, a business and management school at Oxford where Sir John had been a Rhodes Scholar.

Phi Alpha's Farewell Message
We've all heard the common cliché "all good things must come to an end", so this will serve as my final monthly column in The UpZete. There is now one month to go in my two year term as Zeta Psi's Phi Alpha CXXXI, and I am well prepared to pass the gavel of our Order's leadership to my successor, who will take on the mantle of Phi Alpha CXXXII, as he will be elected to that office at Zeta Psi's Montreal Convention on August 16th. It's time for me to go, but also time for me to reflect on my two years as Zeta Psi's CEO and my 37 years involved as closely as I have been within the International Fraternity as both a professional and a volunteer. I've seen many ups and downs for our two major organizations, Zeta Psi Fraternity and Zeta Psi Educational Foundation, but I'd have to say as I begin to fade into Zeta Psi's background that the positives have greatly outweighed the negatives. When I started to work for the International, straight out of NYU in 1971, the fraternity had been reduced in size to a low of 32 operational chapters, down from its peak in the late 1960s of about 40 chapters. It took a significant turnaround of the fortunes of the Greek System for Zeta Psi to find its way to begin the re-growth process, but with great fellow staff members and many engaged volunteers, we grew to a point of once reaching 52 chapters in the early 1990s. Despite some solid growth in the past decade, we have suffered some losses of chapters, both old established ones and some who were more recently chartered. But the effect of this year's growth will be a net addition of two chapters and two colonies, which should get us back to at least 50 chapters by the end of this decade. As far as the Educational Foundation is concerned, there was a dire outlook for its viability in the early 1970s, as the liquid assets fell to less than a half million dollars. Following several large bequests and endowment gifts, and two major gifts campaigns (the first in the 1980s and the other during the past decade-plus), as well as careful financial management and several years of double-digit gains in our investment portfolio, Zeta Psi's chief endowment fund has grown more than ten-fold during these last 35-plus years. And our programs and services have grown significantly during the past three decades. So as we enter Zeta Psi's 162nd year, I have to feel that we are positioned to not only maintain a highly respected position within the Greek System, but also within higher education in the United States, Canada, now in the UK, and perhaps other countries in the future. I have been fortunate to serve this organization in many capacities over the four decades I've been a Zete. Those who have known me for a long time know that my first and foremost inspiration in my career within Zeta Psi came from my first boss and mentor, Jim McLaughlin, Phi Alpha CXII, of Toronto. While I was probably much too young at the age of 24 to have assumed the role as Zeta Psi's Executive Director in 1972, it was Jim, his successor Peter Pakradooni, and others leaders of Zeta Psi back then who saw potential in this NYU English major from the Boston suburbs. The fact that I remained as the longest-serving COO in Zeta Psi's history is due primarily to the fact that I loved my job for the quarter century I worked at Zeta Psi's headquarters, that I had great support staff people working under my helm, that I was privileged to work for and with scores of bright and talented fraternity brothers who served on the Zeta Psi Boards during my 25 years on staff, and that I had a wife and family who grew up with my job and put up with my frequent absences and long days, nights and weekends required of that job, while enjoying some of the perks of attending conventions and social events in many parts of this great continent. It would be impossible for me to thank by name all those who have had and continue to have such a profound influence in my Zeta Psi career. They are led, of course, by the 13 presidents under whom I worked as Executive Director, by my scores of staff associates and assistants who have helped Zeta Psi's operations run smoothly for many years, and by the thousands of Zetes who have come into my life-some more prominently than others of course-who have impacted me in ways that most of them (many of you reading this column) will never fully know. I know that I am one of the most fortunate men alive to have had the opportunity to serve both a movement and an organization that I love and which I know has contributed to the enrichment of the lives and associations of over 35,000 members since a young man at NYU and a couple of his friends decided to found a new order of brotherhood in New York City in 1847. Thank you to all who have allowed me to serve you for not just these past two years as Phi Alpha CXXXI, but in so many other capacities for the past four decades. May Peace Be With You All.
