My son, the Zete!
The rebirth of the Iota Alpha Chapter produced a nice surprise for a father dedicated to Zeta Psi. As the initial group of colonists formed in the fall of 2007, my son, David H. wanted to join, which he indeed did. David began school at the University of Texas in the fall of 2004 and had little interest in the struggling the Iota Alpha, which ended up closing after that spring.
Last month David became the first initiate of the newly activated Iota Alpha Chapter and this week he will become the first graduate receiving a degree in biomedical engineering. His first official duty as a Zete was to fly to Oxford, England and help initiate the Iota Omicron Chapter. Certainly from my point, and I hope from everyone's, I could not be happier that my son is also a Zete. David plans to attend the weekend of the Montreal Convention, having to come late due to the beginning of medical school at UT Houston.

ZeteKidz update
ZeteKidz continues to hold private Zete web auctions of donated and bought items. Several Zetes are bidding against us for Zete-related items, but because of eBay changes we can no longer contact them. Since we bid far in advance, all this does is drive up prices overall. If you know of someone who has bid on an item on eBay, please tell them to stop and contact ZeteKidz.
We encourage chapters that have events (like the Pi Sigma Golf Outing 2008 on June 7th) to give us the details for a free posting on the ZeteKidz web site. We're glad to post the results of your event, too.
Are you interested in using ZeteKidz to help your chapter meet your philanthropic goals, but are unsure how to do it? Take the easy way out: email ZeteKidz USA.

Nu/Case Western Chapter hosts 2nd annual Zeta Psi Qdoba Relays
The Nu raised over $1,400 to donate to Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, a local Cleveland hospital. The Nu Chapter was excited to have over 150 participants, who agreed to run, eat, and then run again on 38 teams of four members each. Despite the cold weather, the participants braved the elements to devour burritos and enjoy the event. A record breaking time of under 20 minutes won this year's Relays - earning each teammate enough coupons to purchase a burrito a week for the rest of 2008. Iota Alpha Chapter Returns! Zeta Psi is back at the Univ. of Texas!
On April 26, 2008 Zeta Psi again returned to the University of Texas with the initiation of 22 fine young men. The Iota Alpha went inactive in August of 2005 due to lack of membership. Last fall the staff team of Dave Hunter, Anthony Shibata, and Anthony "Dubs" Abbate put on the full court press to form a core group. Seven initial guys came together and very quickly found seven more. Early in the spring the group grew to 20 men and ended with 22 "charter" members.
The re-colonization of the chapter has re-energized the Iota Alpha Elders. Many Elders helped out during the pledge process and the initiation. A special thanks go out to Foundation Board member Rick Niels, IA '82 for volunteering the Niels Family Compound and to Matt Shephans, IA '99 for serving as Pledge Master.
This August the Chapter will once again reside at "The House" at 2806 Nueces. Twelve actives plan to live-in and the chapter will be in full operation. Expect to see a decent contingent of Texas Zetes in Montreal. Welcome back Iota Alpha!
EXPANSION UPDATES Georgetown, UC-Riverside, Brock, Australia!
Zeta Psi's Interest Groups at Georgetown University (DC) and Univ. of Cal. at Riverside (CA) have met or exceeded 20 men and will be applying for Colony Status at Convention! That's two new potential chapters within the next year!
We're also well along with a 12 man interest group at Brock University in Canada (our defunct Zeta Chi) and a 10-man Interest Group at the Univ. of Monash in Melbourne, Australia.
Expansion continues to be a major goal, as we look for more expansion and restarts in the future - let us know where you think we can or should be, and if you have a lead! |
Greeks unite to achieve important legislative goals. YOU can help us SAVE LIVES
On April 15, over 200 Greek student and alumni leaders from across the United States participated in the annual congressional lobbying program in Washington, DC seeking passage of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA), S. 638/HR. 643. This legislation would allow the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation and other existing 501-c-3 Educational Foundations to use tax-deductible alumni gifts to make grants to local chapter housing corporations to install or upgrade fire & safety systems or build new houses with these systems. After the recent meeting, there are 189 House sponsors and 37 Senate Sponsors. Our goal is to reach 200 and 40 this Summer - if not more - in order to bring this legislation to a vote this year.
We need your help to pass this vital legislation. We need YOU to register at www.fraternalcaucus.org and use the online system to write a letter to your Congressman and Senators urging them to support this legislation. If you can help even more directly, please let us know - CLICK HERE. This is a grass-roots effort that we can all get behind! |

Phi Alpha's Message
As the English might say: "quite a feat indeed!". Zeta Psi has chartered the first chapter of a North-American-style fraternity beyond this continent at the posh Hurlingham Club in Southwest London on May 3rd. By establishing a chapter at arguably the most prestigious institution of higher education in the world, Oxford University, Zeta Psi has completed the Big Three of the Greek World. It was one thing to become the first truly national fraternity when the Iota was chartered at UC-Berkeley in 1870, and yet another major accomplishment when we became the first international fraternity with the chartering of the Theta Xi at the University of Toronto in 1879. But perhaps the most impressive, if not daring, first in the fraternity world occurred when the Iota Omicron received Zeta Psi's 81st charter two weeks ago. Those of us that went to England for this historic event will never forget being witness to the enthusiastic spirit, dedication, and optimism that was displayed by the thirty charter brothers and seven pledges of our new Oxford Chapter.
We've been discussing this important event in the UpZete and other communications, but to the twenty-or-so Zetes who came over from across the US and Canada, plus the several Zetes who live in the UK who attended the initiation and/or installation ceremonies, this was well worth the trip. We could all feel the excitement and know that we had a part in expanding our Zete brotherhood to another country and continent -dwarfing even our American/Canadian heritage in terms of historical significance of this grand experiment we love and call our Brotherhood.
The question we of course have to ask is: will this last, or is this a flash in the pan that may evaporate in the near term, because it is not an accepted cultural experience on the campuses at Oxford (there are over 30 residential and distinct colleges that comprise what is known as Oxford University)? My prediction is that what we did by chartering this new chapter will not only survive for many years, but will grow, perhaps even extending to other campuses on the British Isles, and possibly to other venues in Europe, and beyond.
This past Saturday, I was privileged to speak at the 25th anniversary of the reactivation of Zeta Psi at Princeton with a dinner attended by over 60 Active and Elders Zetes. While the Brothers of our Omicron Epsilon were deservedly proud of a quarter century of excellence at a campus that banned fraternities in 1882, I couldn't help but draw parallels to what occurred the previous Saturday night in England. I was Executive Director when Zeta Psi led the charge to bring fraternities back to Princeton in 1983, and this has not only been a consistently strong chapter, but they now have 25 years of Elders to count on for support. I discovered that this terrific chapter has seven brothers from England and, not surprisingly, many knew the names of those listed as charter brothers at Oxford. Two campuses that may have seemed "reaches" for a strong Zete presence, but given the strength we've seen at Princeton for 25 years, I foresee similar prosperity for our Oxford group as well.
I end this epistle by acknowledging the person who deserves the overwhelming credit for Zeta Psi's successful leap across the Atlantic Ocean. When Omar Haroun decided to obtain a second undergraduate degree from Oxford after graduating from UC-Berkeley in 2006, I cannot say whether he envisioned starting a new Zeta Psi chapter when he arrived at Oxford. But Omar befriended dozens of young men he met and associated with at Oxford these past two years, convincing many to be charter members of this bold new experiment from across the pond. It was undoubtedly Omar who made this all happen. As Omar prepares to return to America for law school at Columbia University next fall, the men of Iota Omicron will need to continue the legacy Omar started. Will they succeed in doing this? I believe they will.
My congratulations to all those who had a part in this historic event - WELL DONE!
Greg McElroy, Phi Alpha CXXXI

Binding Arbitration
This August, at the 161st Annual Convention in Montreal, Zeta Psi will introduce a new policy calling for all members of the fraternity to agree to binding arbitration with Zeta Psi should legal action arise between the two parties.
Arbitration is a process where both parties of a dispute present their prospect positions to an independent arbitrator and that arbitrator determines the merits of the case and rules on any financial award. The "binding" clause stipulates that each party agree beforehand that the ruling by the arbitrator is binding on both parties and cannot be appealed.
Zeta Psi will communicate more details on binding arbitration in the coming months. Members will be asked to indicate they agree with the binding arbitration policy as part of their continuing membership and activity in the fraternity. This policy will apply to both active and Elder members and only relates to legal action taken by a member against the fraternity. | |
