Arbitration -  Its time has come.

At our leadership seminars I ask undergraduates to raise their hand if they like paying liability insurance premiums.  Not surprisingly, no one raises their hand.  We all know that insurance premiums are a necessary cost of operating a fraternity.  We also know we have definite, but limited means to slow down or reduce the steady increase in insurance costs.  One is to reduce claims through education and common sense.  Another way is to reduce the cost of litigation.

Binding arbitration reduces legal costs.  The process speeds up discovery, eliminates excessive witnesses and the introduction of purely emotional arguments, and treats both sides fairly.  All of these things reduce the overall costs of litigation and that is a desire of all Zetes.

You will begin to see much more information on binding arbitration as the year progresses.  All members in Zeta Psi will be bound by this policy once it is introduced.  We look forward to this policy aiding in stemming the rising cost of insurance.

Greeks nationwide unite to pass Life-saving CHIA legislation
How YOU can help us SAVE LIVES by supporting this critical legislation

On April 15, over 200 Greek student and alumni leaders from across the United States will participate in a congressional lobbying program in Washington, DC to seek passage of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA), S. 638/HR. 643.  This legislation will allow the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation and other existing 501-c-3 Educational Foundations to use tax-deductible alumni gifts to make grants to local chapter housing corporations to install or upgrade fire & safety systems or build new houses with these systems.

We need your help to pass this vital legislation.  To support this effort, we need every brother to register at www.fraternalcaucus.org and use their online system to write a letter to your Congressman and Senators.  Every letter gets us closer to our goal - passage of this critical legislation - and takes only a moment of your time.  Please help us by going to www.fraternalcaucus.org today!

Zeta Psi adopts Binding Arbitration to stem the rising cost of Insurance

This August, at the 161st Annual Convention in Montreal, Zeta Psi will introduce a new policy calling for all members of the fraternity to agree to binding arbitration with Zeta Psi should legal action arise between the two parties.

Arbitration is a process where both parties of a dispute present their prospect positions to an independent arbitrator and that arbitrator determines the merits of the case and rules on any financial award.  The "binding" clause stipulates that each party agree beforehand that the ruling by the arbitrator is binding on both parties and cannot be appealed.

Zeta Psi will communicate more details on binding arbitration in the coming months.  Members will be asked to indicate they agree with the binding arbitration policy as part of their continuing membership and activity in the fraternity.  This policy will apply to both active and Elder members and only relates to legal action taken by a member against the fraternity.

Help build the Fraternity Endowment

Many brothers loyally supporter their own chapter but may never have donated to Zeta Psi's Annual Fund.  If that's the case for you, please add your name to the Roll of Honor in the Circle with a small, simple step - donating a mere $25 to Zeta Psi's Fraternity Endowment. Your support promotes the very best programs in the Fraternity world for Internships, Career advancement, and personal, professional, and  leadership development - and that helped us GO GLOBAL with our Oxford Chapter!

Alpha Theta restart a Success!

April 4, 2008 marked a historic moment for the Alpha Theta Chapter (University of Waterloo), with the initiation of 12 new pledges - our restart class - taking place at the Theta Xi Chapter House in Toronto.

The event had the support of Brothers from Theta Xi, Tau Theta, and Theta Phi as well as the Elders of Alpha Theta, all of whom generously donated their time and energy to help get the ball rolling again for the Chapter.  Also present were IHQ staff Anthony Abbate and Brandon Gurley, without whom the Chapter refounding would not have been possible.  With the support of Theta Xi during their rush period, and the ongoing support of the Elder Association of Waterloo, everything is in place for the Nu class to get off to a great start!

A Brother Remembered

Recently, our Beta Sigma Chapter experienced a tragic loss.  Below is a remembrance of our Brother and friend Adam Trotter. May our thoughts and prayers be with our Brothers from Georgia.

-In Tau Kappa Phi, Anthony  Shibata

From The Beta Sigma Chapter:

It has been a difficult and trying time for all of us in the Beta Sigma chapter, as we are forced to carry on without one of our most beloved brothers, Matthew Joel Trotter, who was killed in a car accident on April 3. Since pledging in the fall of 2007, Trotter was always one of the most popular brothers in the fraternity, and it wasn't just because of his warm, teddy-bear-like personality.

Even as a pledge, Trotter possessed a knack for philanthropy, always pitching ideas at our weekly meetings and always encouraged by the progress our young fraternity was making. He was the most gentle and sensitive 6-foot-3, 250-pounder you'll ever find.

We have all learned valuable life lessons from Trotter, and we can draw on several to help improve our fraternity in his passing. We feel the two most important are:
A genuine care for one other -- Trotter loved every one of us, and we all tried to reciprocate his generosity and sincerity. Many of us are still deep in mourning one week later, and that is a sure sign of the impact he had on our lives.
Real passion for life -- Trotter drained every ounce of fun he could from his experiences, and as we head into the most stressful and chaotic years of college, it is a really important lesson. Family and friends, and most importantly, our brothers, are what get us through tough times. We're getting through this together, but Trotter, he'll be truly missed.

We hope you will keep him and his family in your prayers as well.

RIP Trotter

McElroy Phi AlphaPhi Alpha's Message

I had the pleasure of attending and making comments earlier this month at the annual spring banquets of two of Zeta Psi's oldest and most prestigious chapters: the our 158-year-old Sigma Chapter at the University of Pennsylvania and the 140-year-old Psi Chapter at Cornell University.  Both chapters have enjoyed continuous operations on their respective campuses for many decades, and both are strong today with solid Elder leadership and support.  The Sigma has consistently achieved their target of approximately ten initiates per year for some time and Psi has reversed years of lower pledge class numbers earlier this decade by initiating 36 new members the past two years.  This echoes a pattern of increased recruitment by many, if not most, of our chapters, which we hope will continue into the next decade, and comes at a time when Zeta Psi is stronger than it has ever been.

I attribute much of this improvement in our fortunes to the increased attention to chapter services by our IHQ staff and to the leadership and recruitment programs we have substantially increased in both staff size and financial support during the last 2-3 years.  The stability of leadership from Executive Director Dave Hunter, the service that Dan Backer had contributed for over two years, and more than a year-and-a-half on staff of Anthony Shibata, has helped to allow the Grand Chapter to concentrate attention on all chapters.  Thus, those which have been stable or strong in recent years could continue their success, and those which have struggled recently could take advantage of programming to make them stronger on their campuses.

This is also a month for us to address the critical legislative initiatives of the Greek Movement in America through our collective efforts to influence U.S. Congressmen and Senators to pass the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (S. 638/HR. 643).  CHIA would help make Greek houses safer by providing tax incentives to alumni who make contributions for sprinkler systems and other health and safety improvements.  This has proven to be a challenging lobbying effort for what could save the lives of students living in fraternities and sororities.  Dave Hunter and I will be on Capitol Hill on April 15th with some 200 other Greek student and alumni leaders from across the US to encourage passage of this bill.  We ask for support from all Zetes to encourage their respective congressmen and senators to sponsor and/or support this legislation.  For more information on CHIA or to use the online letter writing tool for this effort, visit the Capital Fraternal Caucus website HERE.

Finally, preparations are set for the historic installation of the Iota Omicron Chapter of Zeta Psi at Oxford University on May 3rd, in London.  This is BIG for Zeta Psi, as we will complete the three most important expansion feats in the Greek world: the first truly national fraternity in 1870, the first international fraternity in 1879, and the first intercontinental fraternity in 2008!

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,

Greg McElroy, Phi Alpha CXXXI
