Canadian Chapter News & Notes

Mu Theta EldersThe Mu Theta Elder Association held a very successful "Pints, Pool and Poker" Active/Elder Stag at the Edmonton Petroleum Club on Friday evening, November 9. 2007.  Over thirty elders and twelve members of the active chapter attended.

The executive of the newly re-established Mu Theta Elder Chapter was elected, with Brother Ray Barnard, Mu Theta 72 as President.

Brother Ken Burton, Mu Theta '72 was presented "An Outstanding Alumni Award" by James Upright, Phi on behalf of the Grand Chapter. Brother Burton was the only elder so recognized at the recent 160th International Zeta Psi Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The award was bestowed because of Brother Burton's leadership and contribution to the Mu Theta Elder's fundraising efforts to secure a new house for the Active Chapter.

Brother Bryan LaFleche and Norm Tatlow made a presentation on behalf of the Mu Theta House Fundraising Committee and reported over $250,000 had been raised to date towards the goal of $700,000.00 for the purchase of a Chapter House. At the conclusion of the evening an additional $65,000.00 was pledged.

Brother Jim Power provided an update on the successful Mu Theta Elder Golf Tournament held on Friday, Sept 7. He reported that in between the occasional rain shower, 19 Brothers challenged the Riverside Golf Course.  The eventual winners were:
Low Gross - Jim Power;  and Low Net - Ken Duggan.

Others winners included:

"You Play Like a Girl" - Bryan LaFleche

Closest to the Pin - Ray Barnard

Longest Drive - Ken Burton

Closest to the Line - Fred Bradley

Longest Putt - George Pheasey -

The Golf Tournament was capped with a return to Pharo's Pizza and then a visit to the potentially new Chapter House on 88th Avenue.

All the elders and actives thoroughly enjoyed the First Mu Theta Pints Pool and Poker Active Elder Stag and are looking forward to next year's event.

Tau ThetaTau Theta recently celebrated our 3rd annual founder's banquet. To think it was only two years ago that we all celebrated receiving our charter, a very proud time for us all. We are very proud of all of our active brothers and elders for the many accomplishments that have been made over the years. We would like to thank all those who attended, and we thank everyone for their support which we have had since our humble beginnings as a colony, to our current status as an active and flourishing chapter.

We are happy to report that we currently have seven new pledges, who have been really concentrating on learning our glorious history, while learning about each other and the brothers. We hope that many of you will come by and visit our chapter and meet these fine individuals. We will be visiting other chapters in the near future, and will encourage our pledges to join us and meet all of our brothers here in Canada.

Theta XiAs the academic year is nearing its end, the brothers from Toronto continue to push forward so we can end the year with a bang.  On Saturday March 8th, we will be hosting a charity poker tournament and charity auction with a bus ride to the local establishment to conclude the night. Proceeds will be going towards Zete Kids so get involved.  Up for grabs are Leafs & Raptor Tickets, electronics, certificates, and lots of other great stuff so come out and participate!

On March 17th we will be hosting McStoutley O'Kikot, which is our annual St. Patricks Day event.  On the same day, a bus will be organized to enjoy festivities at the London house, which should be a benchmark celebration.

On March 28-30th, the Toronto house will be hosting the celebration of Chapter/Founders day.  This will be a historic event as we will be incorporating this amazing traditional event with the brothers from London, Waterloo and Oshawa.

For information regarding any of these events, please contact any member of the Toronto house for supplementary details.

161st Convention in MONTREAL

for what promises to be the best attended Zete Convention in years

In honor of 125 years of Alpha Psi!

Dave HunterZeta Psi is Strong!
Greeting follow Zetes. As March arrives Zeta Psi is in a strong position. With Spring recruiting we look to exceed 600 initiates for the year. Just three years ago we initiated less than 500!

In Canada we"re growing as well going from 40 initiates last year to nearly 60 this year. Plus, should our efforts come to fruition, we could add one, perhaps even two potential chapters.

Let's also note the Montreal convention in August. We'll get sign-up info out soon so be prepared.  In Tau Kappa Phi, Dave HunterEMAIL ME

McElroy Phi AlphaCanadian Chapters Receiving Special Attention

At the recent meeting of the Executive Committee of the Zeta Psi Fraternity of North America, your elected leadership was presented with information on all our chapters. It was unwelcome news that some Canadian chapters had fallen on tough times this year.  To address this urgent need, Executive Director Dave Hunter presented a plan to revitalize our position as the first fraternity in Canada, and the best.  He announced the addition to the Fraternity's staff of Brandon Gurley, Tau Theta '07, to work exclusively with Canadian chapters through the spring semester.  That has proven to be a successful undertaking so far.

This charge is not only consistent with the log-range goals of Zeta Psi to ensure that we are the premiere fraternity in Canada, but that every Canadian chapter is as strong as it can be leading up to Zeta Psi's 161st Annual Convention in Montreal in August.

The effort to improve Zeta Psi on our seven Canadian campuses is paying off, as one of those in danger of closing-the Alpha Theta Chapter at Waterloo-is currently undergoing revitalization thanks to the "special unit" recruitment program that arrived on the Waterloo campus the last few weeks and has already shown evidence of success with the recruitment of a dozen or more pledges at this outstanding Technology campus.  Thanks to the efforts of Brandon, Zeta Psi Foundation of Canada President Rob McMullen, and Leadership Consultant Anthony Abbate, we expect to return to considerable strength at Waterloo this semester.  Likewise, we expect similar success at other campuses in Canada, as we have mapped out a plan for re-development of those Canadian chapters in need.

Since the last Canadian Quarterly, our vision to expand "Across the Pond"-at Oxford University in England-has become a reality.  The Executive Committee has approved the chartering of the Iota Omicron Chapter in May, with a chartering banquet to take place in London on May 3rd.  Since Canada has a special relationship with the UK, we anticipate a considerable presence of Canadian brothers in attendance at this historic event, which will complete the Big Three of fraternity expansion: the first truly national fraternity in 1870, the first international fraternity in 1879, and soon-to-be the first intercontinental fraternity this year.  I invite any of my brothers in Canada who are able to make the trip in May to join us for this important milestone in our proud history.

Finally, I make mention again of our 161st International Convention in Montreal. The dates are August 13-16, 2008.  The Delta Hotel will host what should be one of Zeta Psi's largest conventions in years.  I hope many of you reading this article will attend this annual gathering of Zetes, not only from the United States and Canada, but in this year, from the UK as well.  I look forward to greeting many of you there next August.

BrandonThe last month has been a very hectic time on the road for me!  Having now visited every Chapter except Pi Epsilon, I have nothing but good reports to share with the Canadian Quarterly. The pledge numbers for this semester in Canada are 25% over our original goal and are increasing every day. We should have approximately 50 new Canadian Brothers by the end of this semester. Chapters are looking stronger then ever and I would like to congratulate you all for your hard work and dedication. Keep up the good work guys.

For the last week and a half I have been working with Anthony Abbate and Rob MacMullen on an "almost" re-start of the Alpha Theta (Waterloo) Chapter. The numbers of the Chapter had been dwindling for the last few years and it was essential that IHQ went in to turn the situation around. Presently we have 16 new recruits who will be pinned next week. These individuals are very well rounded and will be future assets to Zeta Psi and the Alpha Theta Chapter.

Just a reminder to you all that the All Ontario "Road Trip" will be taking place March 28th and 29th at the Theta Xi house. This will be a historical event and I encourage you all to attend. There will be Elders from all over Canada and the Untied States attending this weekend; which will be helping the Actives educate and mould these 25 pledges into true Zetes.

"...While at the Toronto Garrison Ball, we had several Canadian Zetes who attended and came up and introduced themselves.  The unique thing about this was that this was an industrial strength military event with a ballroom of 1200+ people, and I still ran into these guys.  They were younger guys that I do not remember meeting before!  I also got this photo of Steve Michaels, U. S. Naval Reserve Lt. Commander and a 1991 Omega (Northwestern) Zete in attendance.  Just FYI.  Truly a GRAND EVENT!" - Adm. James J. Carey, Ret'd.
