Dave HunterAlumni Involvement Helps Chapters

I know many of you are away from your chapter and may not be very involved with what is going on with the undergraduates.  It is an accepted fact in the fraternity world, and one I have witnessed time and time again in my fraternity years, that energetic alumni involvement in the chapter improves that chapter.

Being involved from miles away can be a challenge, but it can be done.  Most alumni groups now have "list serve" emails where alumni can exchange messages.  If you don't have one, start one.  If you have been out of touch, reach out.

By far the greatest impact an Elder can have on his undergraduate chapter is talking with chapter leaders.  Send an email or call.  Ask what is happening.  Help steer ideas and decisions toward what is best for the chapter.  Thank Zetes for serving as undergraduate officers or alumni board members.

A successful chapter has many elements, the most vital being an involved and supportive alumni network.  Be part of it!

ZeteScoutsZeteScouts update

Congratulations to the ZeteScouts Southeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, who have to focusing on merit badge counselor development and programming as their main service to scouting.  This group of Zete Elders has recruited brothers, Eagle Scouts, and other professionals to help add needed programming to the local BSA.   They have set a goal of 15 new merit badge counselors certified by the end of 2008.  Some of the Zetes involved so far are: Rich Breeswine, Eagle Scout and Pi Sigma 87', Bill Henderson, Eagle Scout and Pi Sigma 87', Dennis D'Arcy Eagle Scout and Pi Sigma 88' and Steve Lesko Pi Sigma 87'.  If you would like to become registered with the BSA as a merit badge counselor, all forms and the process involved can now be easily accessed online at our website.

Becoming a merit badge counselor is a rewarding and worthwhile way of providing education and experience to young scouts in their journey through life. If you are interested in starting a ZeteScouts group with your chapter, please CLICK HERE.

Cleveland Alumni Get-together

The Cleveland Elder Chapter held its first official social event of the year with a tour of the Great Lakes Brewery in downtown Cleveland on March 1st.  Fifteen alumni and a couple actives joined in the evening's festivities; several alumni even drove in for the event from Pittsburgh, PA.  The personalized tour showcased the brewery's rich history, local flare, and expanding facilities.  Great Lakes is fast becoming one of the nation's most green brewery's with restaurant-oil fueled trucks, recycled packaging, and streamlined processing techniques for energy conservation.  After the tour, the brothers dined at the brewery's in-house restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the wide selection of beers available.  The group's next event will be a Welcome Reception for graduating seniors at the end of the spring term and a Cleveland Indians baseball game on June 14th.  If you are in the area and would like to join the group, contact the Elder Chapter's Social Chair at: david.a.loomis@gmail.com.

Alpha Theta Reorganization success!
Brandon Gurley, Canadian Development Consultant

BrandonI wanted to update you on the new success of the Alpha Theta Chapter. The Chapter was put through an "almost re-start" where IHQ staff Anthony Abbate & myself and Canadian Foundation president Rob Mac Mullin went into the Waterloo area and started to recruit men from both the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier. We were there for a week and successfully recruited and pledged 21 guys. These pledges will be initiated at Theta Xi April 4th and 5th, which is the week after the All Ontario Road Trip. All Brothers are encouraged to help with the initiation process to build these men into true Zetes.

If three Brothers are able to recruit 21+ guys in one week, can you imagine how many worthy men a Chapter of 16-25 Actives can recruit with the right plan and follow up?

Midwest LTI & NEW Deep South LTI

The Zeta Psi Educational Foundation held the annual Midwest LTI on March 1 - 2 at the University of Illinois Campaign Urbana.  The Alpha Epsilon Chapter were excellent hosts and provided warm hospitality and great food for over 40 attendees from Nebraska Wesleyan, Chicago, Michigan, Purdue, and Case Western, attended the LTI.

A new addition to our LTI calendar - and our 7th of the year so far - will be the Deep South LTI at Tulane in New Orleans on March 29.  Our Univ. of Texas Colony and Beta Sigma Chapter at Georgia will join hosting chapter Beta Tau for this great new program.

ZeteKidz Web Auction to continue
Antique badges, prints, and more

ZKUSA items

The first round of ZeteKidz web auctions ended with good deals for bidders, and good money raised for the Kids. So we will continue them, but as a continuous posting of one or two items, instead of a larger lot all at once. CLICK HERE for the ZeteKidz website to see what's available.

Remember, ZeteKidz buys a lot from Ebay. If you see a Zete item there, please don't bid against us (even if we have yet to bid.).  I promise you'll get a chance at it on the web or at convention thanks to the group that watches ebay for these items.  If you'd like to be a part of this effort - either keeping an eye out on eBay or managing a web auction, CLICK HERE.

We hate to see our brothers' treasured Zete pins and books come up on Ebay. Please consider telling your loved ones that you'd like your Zete items donated to ZeteKidz when the time comes. You'll be assured that it will continue to ride the proud chest of a Zete. Until then, wear it with pride.

WS with BushWashington Scholars Alumni Meet President George W. Bush
Amazing moment for the Premiere Fraternity Internship Program!

Pictured, left to right, are WSFP alumni Aaron Dietz (Phi Lambda/Univ. of Wash. '07, now at the NTSB), Brian Eaton (Elder Pres. of Pi Sigma/Penn State '06, Senate Commerce Comm.), WSFP Executive Director Darren Littell (Phi Lambda '06, DCI Group), President of the United States George Walker Bush, and AJ Fluehr, (Pi Sigma, '08), who interned at the White House.  What an OUTSTANDING moment of recognition of all the WSFP has become, and the tremendous honor and prestige it brings our Brotherhood!

McElroy Phi AlphaPhi Alpha's Message

I write this month's column following one of the social highlights of the Zeta Psi year: the annual Spring Formal of the Zeta Psi Washington DC Elders Association.  It was the fourth annual dinner of our most successful regional association and the first I have been privileged to attend.  With 76 Zetes and dates from 25 chapters -the largest attendance yet-it was a clinic on how to involve Zetes of many and distant chapters in activities that are primarily social, but also provide impetus for worthwhile Zete programs.  The prime example is  the vaunted Washington Scholars Program: the first and by far premiere internship program in the Greek world.

The glue that has kept the DC Elders Association not only functioning, but progressively improving, during the past two-plus decades is Phi Alpha CXXIV, Admiral Jim Carey, who made the success of this regional association a priority among the dozens of groups he's involved in.   He has set up an organizational structure for this association of Zetes who have made the DC metro area their home, such that each President serves two years and successors are pre-positioned for the next 6-10 years.  In a word: failsafe!  While we have a similar leadership "ladder" system at the Grand Chapter level, too few local Elder Chapters have a systemic method of leadership continuity, and more should.

The success of the DC Elders is neither an accident nor a product of good fortune, and is an important model for others to follow.  Lest any Elder chapter leader-either at the chapter or regional level-wonder how they can emulate this systemic of organizational excellence, I am confident that Admiral Carey would gladly share his structure with others, and may be contacted by CLICKING HERE.  While the DC Elders has been a successful association for the 35-plus years of my Zete involvement, I hope other regional associations follow the example of this outstanding group of Zetes in the DC Area.

The DC Elders have also acted to expand Zeta Psi's Chapter Roll beyond our sole, and premiere, DC-area chapter at the University of Maryland.  A team of dedicated Zetes has had promising results establishing a group at highly-regarded Georgetown University, and I was pleased to meet the leader of Zeta Psi's interest group at the Spring Formal.  He feels they will have 20 men ready to become a formal colony by Convention.

While Toronto is the epicenter of Zeta Psi in Canada, there are now two epicenters in the United States: New York and Washington DC, and the DC Elders enjoy the distinction of having the premier regional association within the Fraternity.

As Zetes in DC celebrated a successful year, I was struck by how much stronger Zeta Psi could be if we had similarly strong and organized associations in other major cities!  My hats are off to my fellow Zetes "inside the Beltway", and especially to my Zete friend for almost four decades: Jim Carey.   You have done Zeta Psi proud!

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,
Greg McElroy, Phi Alpha CXXXI
