Help put out the monthly UpZete and Canadian Quarterly!  We're looking for a few Undergraduates (or elders) who would like to help improve our monthly newsletter.  Volunteers would write individual Active & Elder interviews, chapter spotlights, compile and edit our content, and help make sure we put out the best monthly newsletter possible!  If interested, email Dan Backer.

Facebook:  Friend or Foe?

Dave Hunter
M
any of us are now using social networking sites on the internet like Facebook and MySpace.  These sites can extend the reach of your social circle and ease communications.  These sites do, however, come with a major drawback - they are public, not private.

Do you know it is now routine for potential employers to look at Facebook and MySpace pages of potential hires?  Did you know that campus administrators routinely search networking sites for incriminating fraternity information?  Just in Zeta Psi, in the last three months, we've had three separate "issues" arise from pictures posted on Facebook.

We can debate the privacy of posting pictures, we could explain distasteful occurrences away, and we could pretend we don't even have an issue with Facebook or MySpace.  The plain fact is - we have a MAJOR issue!

Going forward, on a personal level, on a chapter level, on a local association level, and on a fraternity level, we must adopt a policy of not posting pictures related to the fraternity on our personal Facebook or MySpace accounts.  These sites have proven to not be our friends.

2008 New Donor  Challenge

We're building steam as more brothers make their first gift to Zeta Psi by donating a mere $25 to Zeta Psi's Fraternity Endowment to support the growth of services and programs to benefit OUR Zeta Psi!

I know many of you are loyal supporters of your own chapter, but may never have donated to Zeta Psi's Annual Fund.  If that's the case, add your name to the Roll of Honor in the Circle with a small, simple step - donate $25 to ensure we maintain the services that have us at the forefront of the Fraternity world in Internships, member services, and personal, professional, and leadership development - and that helped us GO GLOBAL with our Oxford Chapter!

Tales from the Road
Brandon Gurley, Canadian Development Consultant

BrandonThe last few months have been very productive for our Canadian Chapters with the increased staff focus. Numbers are increasing and our Chapters are in the process of restructuring for the future. This is a great time to be a Zete! - but a terrible time to be in Canada. I have never witnessed weather this cold in my life. Temperatures dropped below minus 50 degrees Celsius (-60F or something along those lines) in Edmonton and we could not even walk across the street to purchase food. When I was walking back from meeting a potential rush, my legs started to freeze and I could barely walk up the stairs to make it into the house.

I have to agree with Dave Hunter when he says indoor water sports are a risk management issue - I was taken by a few Brothers to the West Edmonton Mall to join a few sorority girls for an event at the giant indoor water park. I waited almost one hour to go on this funnel slide and ended up flipping over and free falling 8-9 feet right on my back into the water. I was out of commission for the rest of the night and could not even join the Actives at the evenings recruitment event!

I have noticed one great thing from being a traveling consultant - no matter where you go in Canada or the United States, every Zete loves to show visitors a good time and great Zete Hospitality!

The Ontario Chapters are making a historical imprint on Zeta Psi. On the weekend of March 29th all Ontario Chapters (Theta Xi, Theta Phi, Alpha Theta and Tau Theta) will be conducting a combined "Road Trip". This event will consist of: 24-40 Pledges, over 90 Actives and over 150 Elders. Everyone is invited to witness history take place.

Expansion Update

University of Oxford: The ballots for charter approval have been sent to the various voting bodies and a positive vote is expected.  The chartering banquet is planned for May 3, 2008.  The Iota Omicron Colony has 31 members plus spring recruiting.

University of Texas: The 21 members of the Iota Alpha Colony received colony status from the Executive Committee in January.  They are on their way to 30 plus members and a charter vote at the Montreal Convention.

University of California at Riverside: Our current group of 11 has 10 recruits in site and should group to the mid-20s by May and a colony vote in Montreal.

Georgetown University: This interest group of 7 men has 7 to 10 recruits to bid this month.  With a strong spring they will be ready for a colony vote in Montreal.

Clemson University: We have an interest group of 5 men.  Our IHQ staff will meet with this group later in February and help solidify the group.

McElroy Phi AlphaPhi Alpha's Message

As this is President's Day week in the United States, I will use my office as your Phi Alpha to report on the state of the Fraternity.  In short, it is good!  Not quite outstanding, but good.  We are looking to have a good year in many respects, and following the semi-annual meetings of the Fraternity and Foundation Boards a few weeks ago, we are poised for even better times throughout the rest of this calendar year and into 2009.

There are two clear indications of stable and/or growth within the Greek system: pledge/initiation numbers and the growth of chapters within a (inter)national fraternity.  Despite the closing of one chapter this year and the possible closing of one other, we are looking to initiate over 600 men within the Fraternity for the first time this decade, and we will grow by at least two new chapters, and possibly reactivate two dormant chapters, by the end of the spring term.

We installed a chapter at NC State last fall, and at the recent Board meeting in January, approval was given for the chartering of the very first North American Greek organization outside of this continent, at arguably the most prestigious institution of higher education in the world: Oxford University in England.  Subject to approval by vote of the Active and Elder chapters this spring, we have set an installation date as May 3rd.  Any Zete who wishes to join us for the Installation Banquet, to be held in London, England on May 3rd, is invited to email Executive Director Dave Hunter at dhunter@zetapsi.org for more information.

When there is stability in initiations at the chapter level, the Fraternity operates well financially, programmatically, and in nearly all other areas, and when new groups are installed into the Circle of Zeta Psi, excitement permeates the entire organization.  With the impending installation of the Oxford group, Zeta Psi will have achieved the Big Three of Chapter Firsts: first on the West Coast, first in Canada, and first to expand beyond North America.  Their chapter name will be Iota Omicron, representing their link to our first West Coast Chapter, the Iota, and Iota Brother, Omar Haroun, who enrolled at Oxford last year for a second degree and whose vision led to the recruitment of our Oxford men for this seemingly (at one time) unlikely expansion opportunity for Zeta Psi.

I will sign off by thanking all of you who have helped in your own ways to make what is now a good year for Zeta Psi a soon-to-be historic one in May.

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,

Greg McElroy, Phi Alpha CXXXI
