Leadership makes the Difference!
This past weekend Zeta Psi hosted the Kirby Leadership Conference at Lafayette College. 31 of our chapter Phis attended. We discussed strategic planning, risk management, and leadership along with some personal enrichment seminars on resume writing and interview skills. Every attendee expressed the usefulness and value of the weekend.
The key point I'd like to emphasize here is the value of leadership. Leaders are elected or appointed to LEAD! This leadership is never more apparent than in undergraduate chapters, but is applicable to any group. Leaders must be men who can make responsible decision that move the organization in the right decision. Leaders should never be elected based on POPULARITY, but on CAPABILITY. Leaders must not only make the right choices about what to do, but equally important, make the choices about what NOT to do.
Leaders in Zeta Psi - your job is to make the right decisions. To the membership of Zeta Psi - your responsibility is to elect leaders that can and will make the right decisions!

Phi Lambda/Univ. of Washington: Larry Busch fundraiser a success!
"In December, brothers from the Phi Lambda Chapter hosted a charity event to honor fellow Zete Larry Busch. The event raised $1,800. Everyone had a wonderful time, especially Larry, who hasn't seen all of his fellow Zetes at the same time since the accident which left him paralyzed. Larry's family was truly touched by the generosity of the Zeta Psi. This is just one of many examples of the strength and reach of our brotherhood."
ALUMNI NOTE: Phi Lambda Founder's Day is February 5th 2008 at the Phi Lambda Chapter house. 6:30 reception , dinner at 7:30. All Zetes welcome. |
ZeteScouts at the Nu Chapter
3rd annual swim clinic a success!
The Zeta Psi Nu Chapter at Case Western Reserve University recently held its annual ZeteScout Swim Clinic. Brothers helped teach the scouts of Troop 403 vital swimming skills and taught them proper technique for executing fundamental lifesaving techniques. Many of the scouts that attended were able to get their water related requirements accomplished for first and second class. Many scouts also finished partials for the swimming merit badge, and started the lifesaving merit badge with the help of brothers who are certified merit badge counselors. The young men enjoyed their time at the swim clinic and continually look forward to the event each year. This is the chapter's third year of holding a swim clinic for scouts to help improve their swimming skills, pass rank requirements, and work on water related merit badges.
If your chapter is looking for new philanthropy or community service projects, now is the perfect time to start, and is a great rush aid when talking to incoming students. The ZeteScouts program is also looking for interested Elders around the country who would like to become active with the Boy Scouts in their area. If you are interested in seeing how you can help proliferate this program please contact Dave Loomis at david.a.loomis@gmail.com or visit the ZeteScouts page linked off of the Zeta Psi main site to learn more. |
ZeteKidz Web Auction livens up Feb! Antique badges, prints, and more!
If you've been to a convention since 2002, you've seen the silent auction that has been our largest single source of funds. Now, ZeteKidz is launching a new web auction program! Our first web auction will begin on February 4, 2008. We want this to be for Zetes only so the auction will only begin being available online that day at http://auction.zetekids.org. Once there, please bid recklessly on items like the ones pictured here.
February is pretty dull, anyway; this will add a little fun into the month! This is a fundraising venture for ZeteKidz. All proceeds will go to help the causes that our participating chapters support.
Most of the items you'll see come from Ebay. If you see a Zete item on Ebay, please don't bid against us! I promise you'll get a chance at it, and probably at a lower price. We have a group that watches Ebay for these items, and if you'd like to be a part of it, CLICK HERE to email us.
Fundraiser or not, we hate to see our brothers' Zete pins and books come up on Ebay. Please consider telling your loved ones that you'd like yours donated to ZeteKidz when the time comes. You'll be assured that it will continue to ride the proud chest of a true and loyal son of Zeta Psi. | |

A New Years Challenge
Last month, my farewell message challenged Zetes to continue the expansion of services and programs these past two years by donating a mere $25. A number of you took me up on this and so I renew my challenge:
I ask every Zete to donate $25 to Zeta Psi's Fraternity Endowment to support the growth of services and programs to benefit OUR Zeta Psi! I know many of you are loyal supporters of your own chapter, but may never have donated to Zeta Psi's Annual Fund. If that's the case, add your name to the Roll of Honor in the Circle with a small, simple step - donate $25 to ensure we maintain the services that have us at the forefront of the Fraternity world in Internships, member services, and personal, professional, and leadership development - and that helped us GO GLOBAL with our Oxford Chapter!
There are 10,000 recipients of the UpZete - I'm setting our goal at a mere 10% of that - 1000 new donors this year! JOIN ME AND OTHERS AND TAKE UP THE CHALLENGE - DONATE $25 TODAY! (CLICK HERE)

Did You Know... Reg Grange, Univ. of Ill./A E Chapter chosen as #1 Football player of all time!
Those of you watching the Rose Bowl heard Brent Mussburger announcing this historic designation, indicating that "Red Grange decided to go out for football at Illinois after being urged to do so by his fraternity brothers there." Given the prominence of football in the 21st Century, be it the NCAA or the NFL, the fact that THE # 1 PLAYER OF ALL TIME IS A ZETE is a source of great pride for all of us! |
Tales from the Road
Anthony "Dubs" Abbate, Dir. of Leadership Services
As we all start heading back from break to begin the new semester, several chapters are revving up for their major recruitment period of the year. Our Psi Chapter at Cornell is one of those chapters, with a set goal of at least 15 new active brothers. The Psi chapter has been training under our constantly improving Leadership Training Institute method of Rolling Recruitment for several semesters now. Along with the visits of Anthony Shibata, our new staffer Pat Kepp, and our Phi Alpha Greg McElroy, much of IHQ was able to participate and aid the Psi in their recruitment efforts.
While the house at Cornell is an excellent rush tool by itself, the guys must also compete with over 40 other fraternities during a highly structured rush week at a school where around 30% are Greek, meaning they must work hard to meet their goals. Their key to success is organization. Each day, they hold a house clean-up and meeting to prepare for the day's events. They use this time to refresh each member on recruitment tools and tips to meet, get to know, and answer questions from any potential new member. The chapter hosts two events a day. During certain hours the day, the house is relatively open for guests to tour and partake in a variety of foods as well as the company of the whole brotherhood. Then at night, the atmosphere becomes more casual and festive with themed events going on. Throughout the entire week at all recruitment times, they have a number of brothers and friends of the house stationed at the door to take down contact information and other key facts about the potentials that arrive. And between the day and night events, our Cornell brothers review the list of names and facts for guys that seem to show serious interest, as well as ways to better befriend the potential recruits.
Overall, the time I spent with the Psi chapter seemed very productive, with potential new members almost always engaged by the brothers and smooth transitions between conversations and groups of members and potentials alike. It was a great time to see our recruitment methods and the benefits of formal rush come to life so fully, just because the brothers were willing to give it all their time and effort to make it work.
Pat Kepp, Leadership Consultant
If anyone had asked me six months or even six weeks ago what I would be doing right now, I would have thought I'd be sitting in a classroom at Virginia Tech. I couldn't be happier working as a chapter consultant for Zeta Psi for the next year as I take time off from school. This is a great opportunity not only for me, but for the fraternity as a whole because I get the chance to travel to schools I have never been to and spread ideas from Alpha Pi and other chapters around the country. My hope is that I can help all our chapters boost their numbers, improve general operations, strengthen ritual, and take the chapter to number one on campus.
IHQ has hit the road stronger than ever with our Canadian consultant Brandon Gurley and Southern consultant Will Woldenberg. I started off with our Phi's conference at Tau and now have moved on to the Northeast where Anthony "Dubs" Abbate and I assisted at Cornell with their outstanding rush week and continue on to WPI and Tufts. After a brief respite in Pearl River, I hit the road solo for 23 days out to the Midwest with stops at Penn State, Michigan, UIC, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue, and Case Western. I look forward to meeting many of you throughout my travels and at what is looking to be one of our best conventions in Montreal come August. |

Phi Alpha's Message
To my Fellow Zetes:
I am writing this month's UpZete article following the Kirby Presidents Conference at Lafayette College on January 12th. The conference, the first Presidents Conference in several years, was attended by 31 of Zeta Psi's Chapter Presidents and was a terrific start to the second half of the school year. Most of the presidents had been elected at the end of the fall term, so it was a positive introduction to their new leadership roles and responsibilities. It was a pleasure for me to interact with so many of our "best and brightest" who had come together for the purpose of interacting with fellow leaders, the full IHQ staff, and several Elder Zetes who came to Easton, PA to help these new Presidents find better ways to lead their chapters.
The conference was underwritten financially through a generous grant from the F.M. Kirby Foundation of Morristown, NJ. That foundation has provided grants for many years to the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation to support leadership programming. In the past several years, their grants have underwritten costs for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Conference, hosted on the Lafayette campus, at which three generations of Kirby family members have been members of the Tau Chapter, including the Chairman of F.M. Foundation, Fred Kirby '42, the Foundation's Executive Director, Dillard Kirby '81, and Foundation Trustee Jeff Kirby '84, who also serves as a Trustee of Lafayette College. As the President of Zeta Psi Educational Foundation, I wish to publicly thank Fred, Dillard, Jeff and the F.M. Kirby Foundation for their continued generosity in supporting Zeta Psi's leadership programming for so many years. The Presidents Conference which now bears their name, and which I hope will be an annual event on Zeta Psi's leadership training calendar, is one of the most valuable programs that Zeta Psi will offer each year.
These programs do not happen on their own. They require a great deal of planning, logistical accommodations, development of top flight leadership programming and recruitment of conference staff, and coordinating travel schedules with attendees. The person who deserves the lion's share of credit for the success of the Kirby Presidents Conference is UpZete Editor and, for the past two-plus years, Zeta Psi's Development Director, Dan Backer. While Dan will continue as our UpZete Editor for the foreseeable future, he is leaving his staff position this month to concentrate more on his law school studies. Allow me as Zeta Psi's CEO to express publicly my and all of Zeta Psi's gratitude for what has been exemplary professional service to Zeta Psi for the past couple of years. Dan has worn many hats in his still-young life as a Zete, but his innovative and tireless service on Zeta Psi's behalf will never be taken for granted or ever forgotten. Brother Dan's positive imprint on our organization will be felt for the generation of Zetes he has served as a staff member and many more generations of Zetes yet to come. A very big THANK YOU goes out to Dan Backer as he formally leaves staff this month.
As the Zeta Psi Board heads into its semi-annual Board meetings this weekend in Incline Village, Nevada, I can say without reservation that the 2008 year shapes up as one for the ages, as we are growing and improving on so many of our Zete campuses, our finances are strong at both the International Fraternity and the Educational Foundation, we have strong leadership at all levels of Zeta Psi (Active Chapters, Elder Chapters and International organization), and we are poised to add to Zeta Psi's firsts by becoming the very first Intercontinental Fraternity, assuming, as we do, that we will charter a new chapter in the UK at Oxford University in May. I wish you all success in this year ahead.
Greg McElroy, Phi Alpha CXXXI
