Phi Alpha's Message
To my Fellow Zetes:
Happy Holidays and best wishes for a very successful year in 2008 to you all! December tends to be my busiest month of the year, as I help to process thousands of year-end mailing pieces-for the Zeta Psi Annual Fund and other fund raising clients with whom I work from year to year. There are also many gatherings of friends, family and business associates, often involving holiday parties. It is certainly a month to offer thanks to those who make an organization like Zeta Psi a great experience for all who feel as I do: that the fraternity experience will be around for many more generations of students to come.
Many Zetes reading this message have had a profound impact on the success of Zeta Psi this year, and in many cases, for many years. Those of you who are Actives have spent this year working hard to make your own chapter the best it can be. Many Elders expended countless hours serving Zeta Psi as local alumni volunteers and/or as members of the International Fraternity Boards. And many more of you offered your financial support to your local chapter, the Zeta Psi Annual Fund, or (hopefully) both. To all who participate in the success of Zeta Psi, please accept my sincere gratitude at the end of this momentous year for our Fraternity.
As many already know, Zeta Psi is poised to become the first Intercontinental Fraternity in 2008, much as it achieved two of the most important "firsts" in the Greek World: becoming the first truly national fraternity in 1870 when the Iota was chartered at Berkeley, and the first International Fraternity in 1879, when Theta Xi was chartered at the University of Toronto. It is expected that in spring 2008, Zeta Psi will achieve another first never achieved by any fraternity when we plan to formally charter a group of over thirty students at arguably the most prestigious institution of higher education in the world, Oxford University in England. In this age of instant communications, there is little difference between the daring trans-continental expansion in 1870 and what we are prepared to do across the Atlantic in 2008. Can it be sustained? We hope, and believe, so.
To follow up my message of last month, I appeal to many of you who, like myself, choose to make charitable gifts at year end to benefit causes near to your heart. In the case of Zeta Psi, gifts to the Educational Foundation are tax deductible, so this month is a good time to make your Zeta Psi Annual Fund gift. Please CLICK HERE to make a secure gift online through PayPal. If you've already made, or are planning to make, a donation online or in response to an earlier mailing, let me thank you again now for your continued & generous support of Zeta Psi!
Zeta Psi deserves to feel proud of what we have accomplished in 2007, with two chapters chartered in the South (at Georgia and North Carolina State) and one in the north (at Binghamton University), an increase in our leadership programming with more regional LTIs, and more support than ever for our chapters and leadership programs due to a strong economy and bolstered by the three-fold growth of the Educational Foundation's net assets in the last fifteen years. We anticipate the launch of an Alumni Leadership Conference in mid-2008, the establishment of the Oxford chapter, and other new and reactivated chapters to join or rejoin our Circle of Brotherhood, due to the success we're having in our ramped-up expansion program. Is Zeta Psi strong enough to sustain all this growth? You bet it is!
My fellow Zeta Psi Board leaders and I are committed to improving our great Fraternity for many more generations of Active Zetes yet to come. I hope you will join us in that journey in 2008 and beyond.
Wishing you a Happy Holiday Season in Tau Kappa Phi,
Greg McElroy, Phi Alpha CXXXI |
Happy Holidays!
I hope this issue of the UpZete finds you well as 2007 comes to a close. As the year ends I'd like to give a brief update of where we are.
Zeta Psi has 42 active chapters and 8 interest groups and colonies. This is down from a few years ago, which may be troubling, but we're in good shape as we feel the support the staff can provide in the spring can grow us to 46 chapters by convention and not lose anymore chapters for financial or membership reasons. Membership numbers are up with a goal of over 600 initiates fraternity wide. Some notable, hoped for milestones this coming year are the anticipated chartering at Oxford University in the U.K. and the re-establishment of the Pi Kappa Chapter at Bloomsburg University and Iota Alpha Chapter at the University of Texas.
We're having some IHQ staff changes next month. Dan Backer will be leaving staff to concentrate on law school. Dan's hard work and drive will be sorely missed on staff, but he will not disappear from sight as he'll continue editing The Circle, UpZete e-newsletter, and Canadian Quarterly. Dan's duties have been split among the staff and we're looking to hire a 3rd full-time traveling Leadership Consultant. Both Anthony Shibata and Anthony "Dubs" Abbate remain on staff with an aggressive travel plan this spring. We also have a new face on staff: Brandon Gruley, Tau Theta '07 will be our Candian Leadership Consultant for three months and will spend significant time at each of our Canadian chapters.
Our LTI program was the most ambitious ever with nine LTIs and a goal of 50 percent attendance from our active members. We've had five very successful LTIs this fall and four more from January 11 thourgh March 2nd. If you have not yet attended an LTI, please plan on it! On the scholarship side, the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation awarded over $25,000 in scholarships to worthy Zetes. The Foundation also provided $55,000 in educational grants to Zetes participating in scholar programs.
All in all, 2007 was a good year for Zeta Psi. We'll work to make 2008 even better. Allow me to wish each of you a very Happy Holiday Season and a Happy 2008!

Tales from the Road Anthony Abbate, Chapter Consultant
I accepted the job with Zeta Psi for a variety of reasons - it was an excellent opportunity to meet and network with some great people, and a chance to travel all across North America. Besides, I always felt that your employment should reflect your passions, and Zeta Psi has truly been one of my great passions for all four years of college.
What I've found to be the best part of the job is the way we gauge our productivity and success - it's the accomplishments of those around me that make me feel successful. When a chapter doubles its membership, has a great charity event, or manages to pay off its debt, these are the marks that I'm helping Zeta Psi become stronger. While I have only been employed here for 6 months, I have found success in all that we have achieved as an organization. This is why we so strongly encourage everyone to take advantage of the services IHQ offers. The more help we give you, the stronger your chapter will become and the stronger the organization is as a whole.
Highlights of my semester have been founding new chapters, initiating new brothers, encouraging new philanthropies, and increasing LTI attendance. However, the real things I take away are the good times, interesting places, and phenomenal Zetes I've had the opportunity to meet. It's been a pleasure, and I look forward to further interaction and progress in the coming semester. I hope everyone did well this semester. I wish you all a happy holiday season and I am looking forward to seeing many of you at the Phi's Conference, a new year of LTI's, chapter visits, and Convention!

THANK YOU FOR TWO GREAT YEARS!
Over the past two years I have had the privilege and pleasure of serving as your Zeta Psi Fraternity & Foundation Development Director and editor of the Monthly UpZete and the most recent Circle. Now, as I prepare to step down from the IHQ staff in mid January (though I will continue as Editor), I want to take a moment and THANK YOU ALL for being part of our Zeta Psi, and making our Brotherhood the success that it is!
WE ARE ON A ROLL - We are today stronger than ever, with a string of success we can ALL be proud of! We are, BY FAR, the leader in Internship programs with our Washington Scholars, Wall Street Scholars, Northwestern Mutual Financial network, and (coming this summer) Science & Engineering internship programs. Our Leadership Training programs are the best in the fraternity world with the highest percentage of undergraduate attendance. Despite some technical hiccups, our soon to be launched Zeta Psi Job Bank, Career Mentors list, and other professional development tools will set a new standard for Fraternities.
We've seen tremendous expansion, with 3 Charterings this year and 8 colonies or interest groups, including at Texas, Alabama, Clemson, and Georgetown! This Spring we become the first Intercontinental Fraternity with the Chartering at Oxford, and a strong interest group exists in Melbourne, Australia.
As a service organization dedicated to meeting the needs of our Chapters, Actives, and Elders, the IHQ has evolved as well - offering much more service and communication, launching regional alumni clubs, engaging more elders, and undertaking fundamental changes in how we serve YOU - and it's been a success.
Throughout the last two years, one truth remains constant - we are a Brotherhood that is as strong as we are because of YOU - the dedication of our actives and the continuing involvement and support of our alumni made all this possible and will continue to do so. We are where we are - at the pinnacle of our strength - because of YOU. And for all we have achieved these past two years, we have the potential to be greater still, and so I put forth this challenge:
My active Brothers - EARN YOUR LETTERS EVERYDAY. In everything you do, reflect on the legacy that is YOUR Zeta Psi and stand for the highest of principles as upright men. Be Scholars and Leaders, and uphold the values that have persevered for over 160 years!
My elder Brothers - MAKE A PERSONAL COMMITMENT. Zeta Psi meant something to you as an active - help it be the same to this and future generations of Zetes! Attend a chapter or regional alumni event, stay informed about your chapter, or attend convention. Above all, make a financial commitment to support OUR Brotherhood. Won't you donate a mere $25 TODAY to Zeta Psi - online by CLICKING HERE - to help ensure we continue this success? If half the men on this email did this one simple, inexpensive act, it would be a BIG step towards ensuring the success we enjoy today endures!
I wish you all a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season and a prosperous New Year, and thank you all for being my Brothers, always, in Tau Kappa Phi!
