Phi Alpha's Message

McElroy Phi AlphaTo my Fellow Zetes:

Some of you reading the monthly UpZete know what I do in my professional life; I am a fund raising professional whose particular niche is capital campaigns and annual fund programs for fraternities-both at the (inter)national fraternity and local chapter levels.  I have helped various organizations (including Zeta Psi of course) raise millions of dollars over the past thirty years, the last eleven as my full-time job since leaving as Zeta Psi's Executive Director in 1996.  What I have to report here applies to American Zetes, so I ask my Canadian Brothers to bear with me this month as I address a vital matter.

Fraternity fund raising has often been challenging because college fraternities are classified as "social organizations" under the not-for-profit IRS Section 507(c)(7).  Contributions made to fraternities are NOT tax deductible by the donor the way they are to the non-for-profit tax-deductible foundations each Fraternity has under IRS Section 501(c)(3).  In our case, the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation has received millions of dollars for over sixty years and has made millions of dollars of scholarship, leadership and other educational grants.

Our constant challenge is using tax-deductible contributions, within IRS regulations, to support construction, renovation and/or upkeep of independently-owned chapter houses in the United States.  In essence, if sections of fraternity houses are deemed to be "exclusively educational", construction, renovation and upkeep costs of those spaces can be supported with tax-deductible dollars.   That's why virtually every campaign I've worked on has benefited from a 501(c)(3) organization to support all operations of a chapter house qualified under 501(c)(3) guidelines.  A substantial disconnect of these laws is that every dollar contributed to a college or university for the specified purpose of building or renovating a Greek house owned by the institution is tax deductible by the donor.

To expand the reach of tax-advantaged dollars for the benefit of fraternities across the USA, every Fraternity is working towards passage of the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (CHIA).  This act would substantially expand the ability of tax-advantaged dollars to pay for more chapter-related house improvements, such as sprinkler systems, fire alarms and other measures to make fraternity housing safer for students.  This session of Congress is the third time the Greek system has attempted to pass this act through Congress.  The combined efforts of the Greek Movement the past few months, including hundreds of professional and volunteer lobbyists for the CHIA in April, has been encouraging, with more sponsors than ever for this bill. We hope that the "third time is a charm" in our efforts to get this bill passed and ensure safe and healthy living conditions for fraternities and sororities for years to come.

What can you do?  My request is simple: can you make one phone call to help influence this legislative effort on Wednesday, September 19th,to your legislators, especially if he or she has not signed on as a co-sponsor of the CHIA bill?  You can find out if your representative or senator has already signed on to co-sponsor this bill by logging onto to this website by CLICKING HERE  If you discover that one or both of your legislators has not signed onto the bill yet, I ask you to participate in a coordinated Phone March on Wednesday.  Details of this can be found by logging onto this CLICKING HERE.

As a Zete who I am confident cares about the health and safety of student members in every fraternity and sorority in this country, I urge you to take a moment from your day on Wednesday to help get this bill passed.  Thank you for whatever you are able to do in this regard.

Always in Tau Kappa Phi,

Greg McElroy, Phi Alpha CXXXI

Participate this Fall!

Dave HunterBrothers, another school year has begun and it looks to be an exciting one for Zeta Psi.  Chapters have the year well planned and recruitment season is well underway.  Early reports show recruitment numbers up which indicates a strong fall.  Participation by all Zetes can insure an outstanding year for Zeta Psi.

Undergraduates: Take advantage of what Zeta Psi has to offer. How? - Apply for scholarships this week!  Participate in Leadership Training Institutes (Northeast, Pacific, Southern coming in the next six weeks).  And start thinking about a spring or summer internship with Washington or Wall Street Scholars.  Also, at your school, remember it is your obligation to replace yourself while a Zete.  Actively participate in the recruitment process and do your part to insure Zeta Psi continues at your school.

Alumni: Check in with your chapter.  Undergraduates love to hear from past actives and your counsel is always welcome.  Come to a Regional Alumni Club Event.  We'll definitely have RAC events this year in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Houston, and Dallas.  We'll add more cities as we can.  Plus Canadian Zetes in both Toronto and Montreal host outstanding Commemoration events.  Also, when thinking of how else you can help - contributions to Zeta Psi support all of these activities.

ZeteKidz Logo
You read last month about the ZeteKidz activities in Lincoln. I was especially happy with the great turnout of elders for the blood drive.

Now that our actives are hard at work with their studies, we are already at work planning a great ZeteKidz activity for the next convention in Montreal.  We hope to see you there.

The ZeteKidz website is a great place to advertise your event, whether or not you have another website available. And, your donors can pay with a credit card online, so you don't need to set up a separate credit card acceptance account!

Many chapters make ZeteKidz the centerpiece of their philanthropic work, but we'd like more chapters to let us help them create successful and fun charity events. The ZeteKidz website has a number of resources for you to use in planning an event. Come see what's available now at http://kids.zetapsi.org.  If you need more help, CLICK HERE to e-mail me!

Are you ready for the job you REALLY want?
Online Job symposium offers Critical Career guidance for and ESPECIALLY graduating Seniors!

Are you a graduating senior this year?  Then it's time to begin putting together your plan for how to conduct a job search and put together a career plan.  And rather than just winging it, why not listen to the advice of 3 young elders in their late 20's and early 30's who, already successful, can tell you what to do and when to do it, how to interview, the do's and don'ts of the job search process and, bottom line, how to be successful at getting the job that you want.  Don't leave your job search "up to chance" after all the student loan money and 4 years of time you have invested:  watch this video on what to do and how and when to do it by CLICKING HERE.  And for you younger guys, this advice is great for getting a summer job that is "in your desired career path" rather than mowing lawns or helping your uncle clean swimming pools.  Learn from your brothers who are already successful and follow their advice!

Attention ALL Zetes who work for the U. S. federal govrnment - OR have family, friends, colleagues & classmates who do.

WSFP squareEach year the U. S. Government conducts it's own annual charity drive called "The Combined Federal Campaign", so named and structured to replace the countless charities that used to show up every year seeking funds with a single annual drive that divides donations among all 4,000+ charities.

The Future Leaders for America Foundation, which operates the Zeta Psi Washington Scholars Internship Program, is a qualified charity within the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC).  Any funds raised through the CFC gives Future Leaders the ability to support more interns from Zete and the general public on an equal competition basis.  This greatly enhances our ability to increase the number of Zetes participating in the Washington Scholars program.  Limited to the funds provided by the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation and individual donations from Zetes, we currently only support 25-30 Zete Washington Scholars a year.

So we ask that ANY ZETE having ANY RELATIONSHIP with ANY U. S. FEDERAL EMPLOYEE who plans on contributing to the 2007 Combined Federal Campaign, which starts THIS WEEK:  tell them about all the good that comes from the Washington Scholars, how the program IS "Training Tomorrow's Future Leaders Today", and ask them to specify a portion of their CFC donation to donor # 12257 [that's Future Leaders] to help fund this outstanding program and it's proven track record and proven results.  Each donation specified to donor # 12257 goes, in total, to the Future Leaders to support the Washington Scholars (unspecified donations are shared equally among 4000+ approved CFC charities).

MANY THANKS FOR TAKING THE TIME TO HELP WITH THIS!

Phone March to Congress this Wednesay - Sept. 19!

We need your help - This Wednesday September 19, 2007,  help support the CHIA - a vital piece of legislation for the Greek world.

On Wednesday, the Greek world is conducting a "Phone March" on Capitol Hill to bolster Congressional support for the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act (H.R. 643/S. 638).

From 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Eastern on September 19, we are asking Greek members across the country to call their legislators and to ask them to co-sponsor the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act, important legislation that will help preserve and enhance not-for-profit student housing options.

You can contact your Member of Congress by calling the Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121. You can use the Talking Points (click here) below to help discuss the legislation on the phone.

We need as many Members of Congress as possible to co-sponsor this legislative initiative, and your phone call will help show lawmakers how important this legislation is to their constituents and to the Greek community nationwide.

Tales from the Road

How many pledges do you have?

Recruitment has begun at most schools, and some are several weeks in already. As Anthony and I travel the two countries, we've begun collecting numbers, and already this looks to be one of Zeta Psi's biggest semesters yet. Is your chapter doing its part to make us the most elite fraternity in existence? Here's who is contributing thus far:

Tau Gamma, Purdue: 1 pledge, 2 outstanding bids, 11 to be potentially given bids, Warboard of 30, and formal recruitment has only just begun.

Alpha Epsilon, U. of Illinois: 8 pledges, 2 outstanding bids, and weeks of recruitment ahead. Much more is expected of them.

Iota, Berkeley:  14 pledges!

Sigma Gamma, NC State: 19 pledges, beating many chapters and in their first recruitment cycle as a Chapter!

Beta Sigma, U. of Georgia: a strong push from an unhoused chapter on a southern Greek campus.

Sigma Zeta, UCLA: Recruitment retreat to prepare for formal recruitment in two weeks.

Mu Pi, Binghamton: Preliminary Warboard of 25 strong potential new members, and they have yet to be officially recognized by the university.

Omicron, NWU: The prairie paradise that hosted this year's convention. 20 pledges, and 5-7 more bids yet to give.

Phi Epsilon, Maryland: 9 sophomore pledges (deferred recruitment) with one more potential.

Phi, NYU: 14 pre-bids with 10 accepting on the spot with recruitment ending as this report goes out.

And these are just a few examples.  Many chapters are pushing new limits in recruitment despite adversity across the board. How many pledges will you take this semester, and how hard will you work to make Zeta Psi the best fraternity on campus and around the continent?

Canada, don't feel left out, we're coming to you next month, and we expect similar if not better numbers.

Alumni Notes

"Please tell the boys that an old time MU at 90 is still functioning, and should give everyone hope, for I was the Stanford University Chug a Lug Champion, as the Zetes held their own in 1936. At 90, the mind is still the master - please look at www.safelanechange.com on Google, and let all older (over 50) Zetes know that this is the remedy for their driving problems as necks stiffen."  - In Tau Kappa Phi "Marco Polo" Lyon

"I just graduated from the UofC and had an article published recently in a travel supplement. As we often highlight Zetes abroad I thought you might like the link (CLICK HERE).  I will also be continuing my travels in August, back to Europe and then Asia to complete an internship." - All the best in Tau Kappa Phi, Philip J. Fust

"Brother Joe Szczecko [Omega/Northwester '65] of Decatur, GA, vice president at the law firm of Simmons & Szczecko, was named one of the 100 best lawyers in Georgia by Georgia Super Lawyers magazine.  He specializes in family law.  A football player at Northwestern, he made athletic and academic All-American and played in the 1965 College All-Star Game before an NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants.  Snaps to Brother Szczecko!"
