A new Alumni Board
A little time goes a long way, and is all we need to succeed!
A bottomless pit of time. That's how most of us see the alumni board - an endless nightmare of unappreciated, unrelenting work. BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THAT WAY. There is a better way to be involved, give back to our chapter, and with a minimal amount of time and energy.
A Small Commitment. The most effective way to run our Alumni Board - and oversee our chapter, is through small, discrete tasks divided up among many more Brothers. By having each Board member and volunteer do just one single thing, it's easy to be involved, stay involved, and see the good that we can achieve TOGETHER.
A single step to start. We all got something out of Zete, and with just a small bit of time we can give back in a really meaningful way at a time that it REALLY matters. The first step is yours - give a little bit of time this coming year, and come out to our meeting Saturday.
What YOU can do. There are a lot of tasks ahead. You can help with what interests you with committees on Homecoming, Ritual knowledge, Paddles & Composites, Pledge-ed, Awards, Mentoring, Scholarship, Bylaws, and more. Each volunteer, board member, and officer only has a small task, making it easy and even fun. Take the time to help out in a small way to make a real BIG difference.
NOW IS THE TIME TO GET INVOLVED. It all starts this Saturday at noon - attend the meeting and help us continue the legacy of the Upsilon Mu.

"I CAN'T MAKE THE MEETING, BUT WANT TO HELP"
If you can't attend Saturday but would like to be involved, YOU CAN. Let us know what you'd like to help with We have many committees that need Brothers.
You can also support our chapter the old fashioned way with financial support. Take a moment to sign up for our $10/month auto debit campaign - $10 each month is negligible to us individually, would you really miss that small amount each month? But combined it has a big impact and is the best way to support the chapter. Click here to sign-up.
If you prefer a single donation, you can Click here.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT.

Rebuilding our Active Chapter
At one point, our Chapter was prominently featured on the UMASS website for our commitment to Philanthropy.
Let's face it - our Active Chapter failed this year. With a great house and 2 die-hard elders on the ground all the time, they couldn't recruit, couldn't grow, couldn't manage the house they were handed, couldn't build their chapter and our legacy. WHY? Because as a chapter they didn't understand that being a Zete - and a successful chapter - takes work. They needed a plan, accountability, and follow-through to succeed, and the Chapter just didn't have it. WHY? Because somewhere along the way the idea that a Fraternity is nothing but a drinking club with letters emerged. AND THAT'S JUST WRONG.
It's always easier to do nothing. Sitting around drinking takes almost no effort at all. Being a Fraternity means doing something - putting in the commitment and work to see it succeed. Our chapter didn't realize that they only get out of Zete what they put it in to begin with. Now we have a core group of actives who understand, want to succeed, and are ready and willing to do the work - A GREAT DEAL OF WORK - to make it happen.
It's time to put the idea of a drinking club to rest - ZETA PSI is the gift of our hard work to our active Brothers, and its time they fulfilled their part and insured the Torch still burns to pass on to the next generation. Whatever it is we each got out of Zete - confidence, leadership, lifelong friends, GREAT stories - it's time to give back so these guys can enjoy it as we did, and then pass it on themselves. It starts right here, with a PLAN. |
1 - Put Education First
The actives are in college for ONLY one reason - to get an education and be successful in life. Everything else comes second. The purpose of Fraternity is to offer the education you can't get in a classroom and that you need to succeed as part of the greater whol. W have to help our actives create a culture that rewards academic success. Guys who shmuck around and fail out may be fun to party with, but that's NOT why we're here. Everything we do, and the Chapter does, must be part of that education.
2 - In everything we do, make it FUN
There's nothing wrong with working hard and playing harder - they go hand in hand. Over time, hard work let way to harder fun, and the results didn't work out. In this process, the actives - and we as elders - need to realize that we work at this because its OURS, and that the work we put in is part of making it more FUN - it's not one or the other, its about BOTH.
3 - Redefine what it means to be Active
Being in this chapter is a choice and a privilege. It's not for everyone. To be an Active Brother and participate in the life, and future, of the chapter, Brothers must commit to the work ahead, must be prepared to live up to their organizational and financial obligations as Brothers, and must know they will be held accountable to that pledge. We are once again using Membership Contracts to signal the accountability that these Actives are ready to accept.

4 - Organize the life of the Chapter
The Plan encompasses every aspect of Brotherhood. The actives and alumni will sit down this Saturday and review a comprehensive plan for meetings, Brother events, Social events, philanthropy, recruitment, pledge training, and more to develop a semester-long strategic plan to really charge ahead.
5 - Chapter Meeting is the Heart
(Social functions are just the Liver). Institute Chapter Dinner with each Chapter Meeting - cooking and eating together before or after or during the meeting, like a FAMILY!
6 - Philanthropy - Intramurals - Greek life
Develop and execute a plan to be the #1 chapter in philanthropy, which intramural sport the whole chapter can get behind, and how the chapter will be leaders within the Greek community.
The BBBSA, Boy Scouts, ZeteKidz, and the Red Cross are all partners of Zeta Psi. |
7 - Recruit the right kind of guy
Year after year we spend a huge amount of time and money recruiting everyone and their mother, and get lucky that the results SOMETIMES work for us. Yet, we graduate half the men we initiated. We need to start being more focused on where we find the guys we want to call our brothers and how we get them to join. Using the Rolling Recruitment and other strategies that work EVERYWHERE and being efficient in how we recruit will help build the kind of Fraternity that is fun, energetic, and worthy of Zeta Psi. It takes planning and follow-through to go from lucking out with a few good guys to consistently recruiting 15-20 men on campus each year that are 'Zete-Worthy'. That starts NOW.
|
8 - Educate our Pledges
We've gotten away from what Pledging is supposed to be, and what makes it work to bring in guys who value our Brotherhood. That has to change. Using a shorter, more intense, more focused, and more fun Pledge program we can do away with all the garbage that crept in the last few years and ensure pledging is what it was to me and most of you - the craziest, most fun, best time of our College years.
9 - Educate our Brothers
Once a guy becomes a Zete, the learning shouldn't stop. Today's college expects and demands more from us, as do the kind of men we want as our Brothers - those driven to succeed. We will work with the actives to provide an education after pledging that supports academics and offers access to resources including internships and mentors. |
10 - Embrace Ritual
It is a simple fact - in every Chapter of Zeta Psi, AND EVERY OTHER FRATERNITY, Chapters that embrace ritual are the most successful. They run well year after year, rarely have problems, recruit the best men and produce the best graduates. WHY? Because the values in our ritual are the values that every successful, man in History espouses. By making Ritual central to our Brotherhood we reinforce that message - that HONOR, LOYALTY, and FRIENDSHIP matter. We will better educate the Actives in Ritual. We will encourage existing and require new Brothers to take the Ritual exam. For every guy who says that's lame, let me point to ALL the guys who've done this - because there's almost no one who knows our ritual who has not been a great active and a greater alumni. Ritual matters, and ritual works. | |
