Phi Alpha's Message |

This is an important week in the annual cycles of the
Zeta Psi Fraternity and Educational Foundation. The
Fraternity Executive Committee and Board of
Directors, and The Foundation Officers and Boards of
Directors will meet in Atlanta this Friday. During the
course of some 15 hours over two days, your elected
leaders will deal with virtually every aspect of the
current condition and operations of “Zeta Psi
International”.
There are 21 Zetes elected or appointed to serve as
officers or directors of the two organizations, and I
will act as the Chief Elected Officer of both boards
for the first time. I have been preparing for several
weeks to address our problems (what vibrant
organizations don’t have at least some problems?),
celebrate our successes, confront our challenges
with intelligent planning, and plot a strategic plan for
our bright future.
The agenda for the board meetings is
comprehensive: 1) update reports from Zeta Psi’s
chief elected and operating officers; 2) detailed
financial, budget and investment reporting; 3)
development updates, including the growth of the
Fraternity (expansion and chapter reactivations) and
the Educational Foundation (through fund raising
programs); 4) the health and welfare of all our
Undergraduate, Elder, and Regional chapters; 5) legal
and compliance issues, including the operations of
Zeta Psi’s multi-faceted insurance programs; 6) the
operations and locations of our annual conventions;
7) updates relating to Zeta Psi’s rich 160-year
history (i.e. ritual and archives); 8) membership
communications (the Circle magazine, monthly
UpZete e-newsletters, membership directories, online
databases, etc.); 9) our many service and
educational programs offered through the Fraternity
and Educational Foundation (i.e. scholarships and
grants, leadership training, alumni chapter
development, Washington and Wall Street Scholars
Programs, Zete Kids, Zete Scouts, Star Points
Programs and others); and 10) detailed reporting and
discussions of our longer-term objectives through the
Zeta Psi Strategic Plan. It is no surprise why the
operational business of Zeta Psi takes two days of
board meetings to complete!
We are also celebrating a unique birthday this week.
On Saturday evening (January 20th), the full Zeta Psi
boards will participate in a relatively rare Chapter
Installation, as a Zeta Psi charter will be granted to
the Beta Sigma Colony of the University of Georgia.
While many view this as our first entry into this
state - home of the largest metropolitan area in the
South (Atlanta, of course) - Zeta Psi had a brief and
almost invisible lifespan in Georgia before the Civil
War. In 1860, a Charter was granted to a small
group of students at Georgia Military Institute of
Marietta, Georgia (now a suburb of Atlanta). But the
chapter (the first “Gamma Chapter” of Zeta Psi) and
the institution were destroyed during General
Sherman’s march through Georgia and virtually no
record of that chapter survives. So, following a brief
140 year absence, Zeta Psi will return to Georgia
with a new charter at the home of the Bulldogs. And
so it is during this momentous week. Atlanta: here
comes Zeta Psi! Until next month...

Executive Directors message: Zeta Psi Works because of Participation |
 |
Over the past twelve months Zeta Psi has worked
towards one goal – strengthening EACH of our
chapters. We’ve had much success. With some
chapters we’ve increased recruitment
numbers, with others we’ve smoothed out
operations, and still others we’ve simply re-
established communications. At some chapters we
have not had success and sadly we have lost or will
lose one or two. On the flip side, Zeta Psi installed a
new chapter at Ontario Tech and will bring on
our newest member of the Circle – the Beta Sigma
Chapter at the University of Georgia – this week. In
the end, our overall brotherhood is stronger.
Without a doubt, the key to a chapter's long-term
success is Elder support. Every
successful chapter has a corresponding
involved Elder group. Conversely, struggling
chapters lack alumni involvement.
This newsletter goes out to 10,000 Zetes,
including 1,500 active members. Yet, only
2,000 of our alumni actively support any Zeta Psi
effort. To those of you that participate I’d like to
say THANK YOU for your support of Zeta Psi.
I appeal to those of you that have not yet been
able to participate – please help us get stronger!
Strength coes not just from heavy involvement – and
thank goodness we have those that can do that –
but also through a myriad of little things. I’d like to
suggest some small ways that add up to huge
support. "Support" falls into three distinct
categories – time, encouragement, and money. You
may be far away for a Zete active or alumni group,
you may just be starting out in life, you may just not
have been in a position to even think of Zeta Psi, or
maybe you just don’t think your help will make a
difference. Well, anyone – YOU - can find the way
to support Zeta Psi that makes sense for you.
Time: Time means participation, but you can
participate in many ways that don't take much
time. If you’re near a chapter (any chapter) you can
swing by one time and drop in. Actives enjoy
meeting older brothers. You can help make it clear
that Zeta Psi is a lifelong brotherhood, not a college
club. You can send an email to your chapter to see
how they are doing. I’ll pass anything along so no
one needs to know everyone’s email. You can get
involved with either your Elder group or with any of
our Regio
nal Alumni Clubs.
Encouragement: Our actives need
connection to what Zeta Psi is. Your visits, emails,
guidance, and/or ideas go a long way - It just
takes a little of your effort. Our online Career
Mentors List is a great example of this - and we
can always use more mentors!
Money: Here’s that darn appeal for money!
Well, money makes the world go round. The nice
thing is that giving doesn’t have to be painful. With
the internet, online giving - especially auto-debit
programs - can be simple and painless. For example,
would you notice $10 per month out of your
checking account? If 100 Zetes signed up for an
auto debit, Zeta Psi would raise $12,000 more
per year. That means one more visit to every
chapter!
Bottom line: if you participate, Zeta Psi
will (not can, but will) become
stronger!

Your voice can save a life - maybe a Zete's life! |
 |
In recent months there have been nearly half a
dozen fires at fraternity houses - destroying
properties and taking the lives of students. Zeta
Psi has been fortunate that none of those fires was
at one of our houses and that no Zete's have been
hurt. YET.
The simple reason for these tragedies is a lack of fire
sprinklers in many Fraternity houses. WHY?
Because while donations to a University to install
dorm sprinklers are tax-deductible; donations to
protect the lives of Fraternity members are not. THIS
IS WRONG - we need to be free to use tax-
deductible gifts to upgrade chapter houses and
protect the lives of Zeta Psi undergrads! YOU
CAN MAKE THAT HAPPEN!
Zeta Psi is working with every other Fraternity &
Sorority and with the Capital Fraternal Caucus to
change this discriminatory - DANGEROUS - law by
passing the Collegiate Housing Infrastructure Act
(CHIA). With the new Congress, Greeks across the
country are working together to help change the law.
When the last Congress ended, we had 150 House
sponsors and 28 Senate sponsors. As the new
Congress begins we hope to build the support needed
to make this bill become law! Passage of the CHIA
will allow the Zeta Psi Educational Foundation to use
almost all tax- deductible gifts to improve our
chapter houses. WE NEED YOUR HELP TO MAKE
THAT HAPPEN!
Please take a moment to register at www.fratern
alcaucus.com and then use the website to send
three letters from your desktop to your Senators and
Member of Congress. This will help us demonstrate
the NATION-WIDE support for this effort. By
registering, you can voice your opinion through email
& letter writing efforts to help move more
congressmen to sponsor this vital legislation. It takes
5 minutes of your time but will help save a life - and
it could be a Zete life - by insuring tax equality and
letting us spend our resources fairly.

Would you like to be a mentor?
Last months reminder about Zeta Psi's online
Career mentors list inspired several alumni to
volunteer as new mentors! If anyone else would
like to be a mentor, CLICK HERE
to let us know!
What is the Career Mentor list? Zeta Psi
brothers benefit from the counsel of older
men – those who have succeeded in life and their
chosen fields, and want to help their younger
brothers do the same. As students and young
alumni, you’re constantly learning about the world
and what you want to do in it, and having the
opportunity to talk to a professional in a field you’re
interested in can offer you tremendous insights –
what you need to know and do, and whether it’s the
right field for you! Zeta Psi’s online Career Mentor’s
list does that. Alumni in various fields have
agreed to take your calls and emails with questions
about their fields - to help you!

A note for Cornell/Psi Alumni from Br. Myron Stacks, '58 |
 |
Just a quick note to let you know that there is now a
new Cornell Alumni Club in Connecticut. In April of
2006, Cornell formally acknowledged the Coastal CT
Cornell Club, and as the organizer, I am president for
the first 2 years. To date, we have 53 members,
and "Ted" Swigert '56 is in our geographic area and
we're pushing at him to join up. Our territory covers
New Haven to New London to Middletown, so you
may want to relocate to that area to participate in
the best, new Cornell Alumni Club. We just had our
Holiday Social and I had a huge surprise to find my
roommate, Bill Lehr '58 on our doorstep for the
event. Have spoken with Frank Ferro '58 recently
and we are all planning to be back "on the hill" for our
50th in 08. Nearby Zetes from adjacent years would
be fun to see. How about it Sam Kennedy ?

Who Recruited You? Williams, Middlebury, Brown, and Purdue |
|
Ed
Sitts, Rho/Middlebury, 1958.
This is my first contact with Zeta Psi since I left my
position as Assistant General Secretary in 1960.
Notwithstanding that, I certainly entertain nostalgic
feelings about one of the premier international
fraternities in the country and am proud of my
undergraduate affiliation and my contribution to
having brought Zeta Psi to Middlebury College as well
as my early-Elder years in which I visited many
chapters and, hopefully, provided them with new
perspectives. It was truly exciting to read in Brother
Backer's column in UpZete 2.10 in which he
delineated the positive news of numerous upcoming
chapters of Zeta Psi. I can well appreciate their
enthusiasm having myself gone through the
excitement of joining this historic fraternity.
I pledged a new local fraternity at Middlebury in my
freshman year there and a year later chaired a
committee to investigate becoming a chapter of a
national fraternity. Phi Sigma made an exhaustive
study of national fraternities that were not then
represented on the Middlebury campus. I remember
our conclusion that Zeta Psi was head and shoulders
above the scores of nationals that we looked at,
most of which were eliminated because of clauses
against initiating blacks ("negroes" then, just three
years after Brown vs. Board of Education). We duly
applied for membership. I'll never forget standing up
in front of the Zete delegates at the General
Convention in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 1956
and telling them that we very much wanted to join
their ranks, but only if we were allowed to initiate
members of any race or creed whom we determined
to be worthy brothers in Tau Kappa Phi. In different
words we wanted them to confirm the absence of
a "clause" in their charter. Our petition was adopted
by acclamation, and this at the same convention
that elected William B. Harrison of Upsilon, North
Carolina as its new Phil Alpha! We were all inducted
three months later as the Rho Chapter thus becoming
the 33 rd chapter of this great fraternity. The
following summer, with the moral support of an elder
of Kappa, Tufts and another of Eta, Yale we
purchased our own house to replace a rented
structure. Unfortunately, about 25 years later, we
were forced to go inactive due to the anti-fraternity
bias of the Middlebury administration.
Well, please excuse the ruminations of an elder Elder
but I was inspired to share them with you by Dan
Backer's column. The fraternity may rarely have
stood as tall as it did in the earliest days of the civil
rights era.
David Armour
Doheny, Zeta/Williams College 1953.
I pledged Zeta of Zeta Psi at Williams in September
1949 and was initiated in early 1950. I knew little
about fraternities, but received a final bid from the
Zete house and two others. It was a difficult choice,
but what tipped the balance was the fact that I
recalled that my grandfather had been a Zete. For
the record, he was Douglas Armour, who was
initiated at the University of Toronto chapter in
1879. His son, my uncle John Douglas Armour, was
initiated at the McGill chapter in 1910. I have all
three of our initiation certificates, all in exactly the
same design.
Williams, for better or for worse, abolished all of its
fifteen fraternities in the 1960s and "bought" all the
houses, so Zeta of Zeta Psi is only a memory. But it's
handsome red-brick chapter house, now named for
Hamilton Wood '10, still stands on the old Fraternity
Row on Main Street, Williamstown, Mass. and will
once again be used for residential housing for
Williams undergraduates, I understand.
Ham Wood, of Worcester, Mass., was our alumni
patriarch and returned for Alumni weekends
throughout my four years (1949-53). After dinner, he
always led all of us out on the front porch and led us
in a lusty rendition of Chattanooga. When we got to
end of each chorus "he silent pointed to the badge,
and SPOKE Tau Kappa Phi", we shouted out
the "SPOKE", then paused while the echo resounded
sharply from a large dormitory 100 yards across the
road, then added, with feeling, "Tau Kappa Phi".
Well, there you have it - 128 years of Zeta Psi
history. I am unlikely, at the age of 75, to attend
another Zete event, but I hope the tradition of our
corny, sentimental and wonderful old Chattanooga
still lives and resounds.
Bryon
Buck, Tau Gamma/Purdue, 1992.
I joined Zeta Psi from what amounted to a practical
joke played on one of my hallmates my Freshman
year! Here's the story: I was interested in rushing a
fraternity just so I would have some party contacts.
We spend a lonely fall semester doing a lot of laundry
and doing geeky things on Friday and Saturday
nights. While I was rushing Alpha Tau Omega, two
guys rushing Pi Kappa Alpha signed up another guy in
our hall up for Zeta Psi as a joke. This guy talked a
big talk about a lot of things, but did not walk the
walk at all.
So, imagine his surprise when the Zete Rush
Chairman calls him up, and invites him to a Spring
rush function. He went, and came back with some
really fantastic stories about the guys there. His
stories interested me, so I rushed myself, and found
myself falling in love with that house. The rest is five
years of pledging and brotherhood, and about eight
more years of active Elder participation . . . well,
until I got married and had kids and moved to
Georgia.
Anyway, that's my story! It's not necessarily the
story you may be looking for, but it is proof that
good men can get their reputations spread around.
Eric J. "Rabbit"
Evans, Epsilon/Brown 1979.
I was a skinny freshman at Brown back in 1975, and
taking a "hockey skating skills" class to try to
develop some proficiency where I really needed it,
when a friendly guy in the class invited me to play an
intramural game along with his fraternity. So, I
skated on the third line for Zeta Psi, against some
long-forgotten foe, and we were shellacked, 6-0.
But, to my admiration, every Zete on that team
played his best (even if it was not very good), was a
good sport, and had an encouraging comment to
share with me, with other Zetes, even with
opponents. On a later occasion, I dropped by "the
house" (which I thought was a silly name for a
dormitory) and met other Zetes. Each was different;
what impressed me most was the diversity of types.
I encouraged a few of my freshman dorm friends to
join me on the next rush occasion, and we quickly
recognized an opportunity to make some new friends
as well as maintain our friendships with each other.
Five of us joined the Epsilon Chapter of Zeta Psi that
spring of 1976, and we remain good friends today!
Who recruited you?
