A busy month for the Washington DC Elders!
    DC RAC logo

On Monday, August 7th The Washington Scholars Fellowship Program held the graduation ceremony for the Summer 2006 class. The graduation certificates and lapel pins were presented followed by speeches from Chairman Brian Phillips and co-founder and former Phi Alpha James Carey. Phillips thanked the Scholars for all their hard work this summer and for meeting the high level of expectation that comes with entry into the program. Carey gave an inspiring message to the recent graduates saying this is just the first step on the path to a successful career in public policy.

On Saturday, August 12th, the Zeta Psi DC Elders Association made their way to RFK stadium to see the Washington Nationals take on the New York Mets. The Zetes & Dates enjoyed a tail gate prior to the game with DC Elders President James Prendergast cooking up burgers and brats for the attendees. The Nationals played the Mets close, but ultimately came up short 6-4.

Next up for the DC Elders is the annual Fall Social, which last year featured a wine tasting from the vineyard of Brother Jim Doolittle of the Psi Chapter – this year's event should be another big hit!

    Our Phi Alpha's message
    Hunter

    Dear Fellow Zetes,

As my term as Phi Alpha comes to and end I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for allowing me to serve the Fraternity not only as Phi Alpha for the past year, but as a board member for the past 13 years and a volunteer for 26 years. Though I'll continue to serve the fraternity after the Philadelphia convention, I will no longer serve as an officer or board member.

Much has happened the past year. We've seen the transition of Andy O'Brien and Tim Kennedy from our separate executive directors for each of our organizations, the re-combined Chief Operating Officer position taken on by me, the changing of our fee structure along with addressing the accounts receivable of many chapters, and the refocusing of our IHQ staff time to get out and visit our chapters. Any one of these changes would mark a significant milestone in one year, yet we had many. Some of those changes came with disagreement by some. We always hope that as a group we Zetes always work for the betterment of our Circle. Sometimes that effort causes happiness, sometimes pain. But the common purpose is the same - make and keep Zeta Psi as the greatest fraternal organization in the known universe.

I hope I get the opportunity to meet each and everyone of you reading this note sometime in my travels for Zeta Psi. It's been a pleasure to serve the Fraternity as its elected leader, and I look forward to serving as the Chief Operating Officer of our professional staff for years to come. Proud to be a Zete!

    Always in Tau Kappa Phi

Zeta Psi Partners with the Big Brothers & Big Sisters of America
    BBBSA

This fall, Zeta Psi embarks on an ambitious effort as part of our Philanthropic commitment to the development of the youth of today and the leaders of tomorrow.

Zeta Psi has joined forces with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the nation’s oldest, largest and most effective youth mentoring organization, to run a Zete-wide, ZeteKidz one-day philanthropy. Our goal is to raise money for Big Brothers Big Sisters while raising the profile and positive image of our chapter at each Zete campus, and to provide our active Brothers the opportunity to meet plenty of new potential friends, future brothers, and attractive campus co-eds!

Here’s the plan: On Wednesday, October 4th, each participating chapter (and we hope that most will realize what a great and easy event this is) will break up into teams of two and go DORM-STORMING – knocking on doors in the dorms and asking for donations to support the BBBSA. IHQ will provide scripts, change cans, and T-shirts and our active Brothers will provide the footwork over the course of four hours in one night. Based on the stunning success of the Upsilon Mu / UMASS chapter at similar efforts, we expect each chapter can EASILY raise $1000 – that’s $50,000 for this worthy cause!

To sweeten the deal, we’re working to line up sponsor companies to try and have every dollar our Undergraduates raise matched – doubling the benefit of this effort! For our alumni – if you think your company would be interested in being a matching sponsor, LET US KNOW!

BBBSA is so excited about our efforts that they’ll be emailing or calling each school’s President/Dean to let him know how great Zeta Psi and our Brothers are, along with issuing a nationwide press release! Add in the benefit of getting out on campus and meeting all those potential recruits and this becomes a GREAT way to do something good for the Chapter and a GREAT way for Zete to help those in need.

More details will be coming soon, but we hope this will become one more big success for Zeta Psi!

    FALL PREVIEW

The past semester and summer saw some huge innovations and successes for Zeta Psi, and this fall looks to be even greater! Here’s a hint of what’s on the horizon:

    • EVERY CHAPTER GETS A VISIT – and more new IHQ services for chapters and alumni!
    • Two brand-new Regional LTIs – the Pacific LTI in September at UCLA and the Southern LTI in November at UVA.
    • More Regional Alumni Club get together's and events throughout the US & Canada!
    • Continued expansion of our online ZeteBook – including the new online Pledge Registration function, chapter and alumni management tools, and Fundraising programs.
    • MAJOR revamp of the Circle – bigger, better, more!
    • New Pledge manuals and continued updates and upgrades to the IHQ website!

And LOTS more in the works as Zeta Psi prepares to enters its 160th year, we’ve got some big plans in the works to ensure Zeta Psi’s continued excellence and leadership!

Presentation of Historic Tau Chapter Gavel to Steve Hartwell
    tau gavel3

Phi Alpha CXXIV Jim Carey presents Phi Alpha CXXVI Steve Hartwell of the Tau Chapter at Lafayette with the Tau Chapter "Phi's Gavel" from the 1928 term of office. The inscription on the gavel reads as follows: "Richard Porter Brown, Phi, FIRST AND SECOND TERMS, 1928 - 1928, TAU of ZETA PSI". While Brother Hartwell did not attend Lafayette until several years later, he knew Richard Porter Brown and other members of his family who were Zetes and were Tau Chapter Elders when Steve was an undergraduate there. Special thanks to the IHQ staff for spotting this GREAT Zeta Psi keepsake on eBay and making sure it remained within the confines of our beloved circle of brotherhood.

Active Profile: Will Woldenberg, Beta Tau/Tulane 2007
    Woldenberg

“Beta Tau is as strong as it has ever been. There’s no other school I’d rather be at right now than Tulane University and there’s no other city I’d want to be in than New Orleans,” remarks the current Phi of the Beta Tau Chapter at Tulane University, Will Woldenberg. Will first joined Zeta Psi as a recruit in January of 2004 and since then, has been the chapter’s Alpha Sigma, Rush Chairman, and now serves as Phi. “Think about it; the guys in this chapter have chosen to help rebuild a major American city. I think that’s something pretty special.”

Following Hurricane Katrina, many students decided to continue their studies at a different university but some, like Will, felt awkward about being at a different school. “It almost felt sacrilegious; studying anywhere else would have probably depressed me.”

Instead, Will took an opportunity with Zeta Psi to intern in Pearl River, New York under the supervision of the Director of Chapter Development Chris Bond, himself a fellow Beta Tau alumnus. Will was joined by another brother from Tulane, Marty Smith, and the two of them had the opportunity to see the inner workings of the International Headquarters, while visiting fifteen different chapters. “It was great. Of course, being an intern is never fun. But the experiences I had - watching the Yale Bowl, visiting Montreal and Toronto, Homecoming at Penn State, a banquet at NYU - working at IHQ makes you realize your brotherhood extends from your chapter walls.”

As the new school year starts up, Will has a lot of work ahead of him. He’s a contracted Army ROTC cadet, the commander of its Color Guard unit, a member of the Ranger Challenge team, and carries a double major in English and History. But he, and the other brothers of Beta Tau, are eager to start the fall semester. “It’s time to make up for what we missed last year. I can’t wait.”

    FALL EXPANSION PLANNING
    Badge of Zeta Psi

As the new academic year begins, Zeta Psi already has 2 very strong colonies at the University of Georgia and Binghamton University (NY) , and the re-activation of our Bloomsburg University Chapter, the Pi Kappa. We’re also looking at a number of possible expansion opportunities. As we continue to evaluate each opportunity and decide how to proceed, YOUR HELP can make a big difference – by referring potential members! Here are the schools we’re looking at right now:

    • Arizona State University - 12 man Interest Group in place
    • Florida State University - continuing it's recruitment
    • George Mason University - several interested men already
    • Stanford University - Mu - a targeted restart this Fall
    • University of Miami - a core group is coming together right now
    • University of Minnesota - Alpha Beta - several Pledges already for this restart
    • University of Texas - Iota Alpha - looking to restart this Fall
    • Vanderbilt University (TN) - 2 transfers from Tulane are looking to start a new group here

Undergraduates – you all have friends from back home that you thought would have made good Zete’s if they went to school with you, so lets give them a chance to try it at their own campuses! If you have any friends or relatives at the prospective schools or know someone that would be interested in joining Zeta Psi, LET US KNOW.

Alumni – do you know any prospective students who could be part of starting a new chapter of Zeta Psi? Perhaps your own sons and grandsons, nephews or cousins. If you think they are Zete material, LET US KNOW.

As we compile the lists of referrals from all of you, we’ll look at what makes the most sense and, with you, start communicating to these guys. You can also talk to them ahead of time and see what they think, but either way, LET US KNOW – send the names, emails/phones, and schools of any Zete-worthy young men you know!

know any potential Zetes? LET US KNOW!
