Greetings!

June is a busy month for Young Chicago Authors with many new projects and developments underway. We would firstly like to welcome Courtney Brouwer, Tracie Hall and Dan Sugrue as new members of our Board of Directors at Young Chicago Authors. As promised our evaluation page is up and running on our website with many thanks to Chicago Arts Partnership in Education (CAPE) and Arts Work Fund for supporting this program development. You can listen to some wonderful interviews with our young writers on:
www.youngchicagoauthors.org

We would also like to congratulate Jennifer Karmin, one of our teaching artists on the launch of her book aaaaaaaaaaalice. This is a unique publication combining the page with performance. June looks like a full month of youth inspired performances  starting with our Graduation on June 5th, Printers Row Literary Fest and a wonderful collaboration between LTAB poets and the Civic Symphony Orchestra. SAVE THE DATE
Young Chicago Authors/Say What will be sponsoring a dinner in partnership with the organization, Across the Table,
at Quartino Restaurant, 626 North State Street, Chicago on Tuesday, July 13th, 6:00 pm. Across the Table sponsors dinners around the city to bring diverse groups of Chicagoans together for a great meal and great conversation. There are spaces for five YCA youth to attend on June 13th. This dinner is a precursor to a series of all-youth dinners that will be co-sponsored by Say What and Across The Table, to bring youth to the table to discuss issues of importance to them and to experience some of Chicago's good eats.

We are looking for sponsors to offset the cost of the dinner for our youth. If you are interested in treating a young person to dinner, the cost is $30. Please check out www.acrossthetable.org, or contact Natasha at YCA, (773) 486-4331 ext 16 for more information.

East Village Youth Program
This summer, as he has for the past five summers,  Bob Boone will be teaching a YCA workshop at the East Village Youth Program. For eight weeks, twenty students will write stories, poems, and plays. It is likely that the class will continue into the school year.

Through the years, YCA and E.V.Y.P. have enjoyed a strong relationship. For several years, they even shared space on Division Street. It is an excellent example of a strong partnership. Let's hope it will continue.

 About The Encyclopedia Show

Winner of a 2009 Orgie Theatre Award, The Encyclopedia Show is brought to you from the quirky minds of poets and producers Robbie Q Telfer and Shanny Jean Maney. The Encyclopedia Show showcases visual art, comedy, music and spoken word on a wide variety of subjects related to a chosen topic. Each month a new topic is picked at random from the encyclopedia and assignments are sent to a diverse group of writers, artists, poets and performers. Past contributors have included Bill Ayers, Marc Smith, Paul Sereno, Anis Mojgani, Idris Goodwin, Lisa Buscani, Cameron McGill, Kevin Coval, Derrick Brown, and Marty McConnell. For audio from previous shows and additional information, please visit www.encyclopediashow.com

The Encyclopedia Show draws its novice and notable talent from Chicago Area and National Artists in the Slam, Academic and Youth artists' communities.

"I really want this to be an age-integrated show. I'm not saying that I have a deep desire to hang out with high-school kids, but, in terms of mentorship and ensuring the future of the community, it's a great model."

-Robbie Q Telfer in TimeOut Chicago

New Mission Statement
We have revised our mission statement to the following;

"Young Chicago Authors transforms the lives of
young people by cultivating their voices through writing, publication, and performance education."

We wanted to reflect the broader range of writing programs that we are currently offering to include journalism, media as well as poetry, prose, screenwriting and criticism.
This time of year is exciting for many of us, but for some it beholds an unknown future.  We would like to extend our support to teachers in Chicago who are facing redundancy. Teachers are often the undervalued spine of our education system, if we are to invest in our future, we need to invest in the people who inspire the minds of the future. We at Young Chicago Authors are committed to supporting the education community.

We hope you all have an inspiring month and good luck to all who are participating in the up and coming performances. Many thanks for your support in the Chicago creative writing community keeping brains and souls alive.

Yours Sincerely,

Carron Little
