Greetings!
Wow, you sure have great kids! I have enjoyed your children so much this past week. I have seen each and every one of them learn, grow, smile, mature, laugh and pray. Celebrating Catholic Schools Week each year, reminds me that yes, you can have it all! Our building was filled with happy students learning academically, socially and spiritually. From a Geography Bee to Caring and Sharing Projects and Reading Day to our Prayer Service, students shared camaraderie unlike any other week of the year. Ask your child if they had "fun" at school this week. I suspect they'll say yes!

The Emerald Auction
Emerald Auction Spirit is Contagious
The families who bid on and won the four online auction items were delighted with their prizes. We asked the happy winners to share their comments with us:
Mary Kate Orozco (Isabel, 1st grade) and her husband Fernando won the getaway trip to Door County in early January. She reports that "we experienced an authentic Door County Fish Boil. We got to experience a turn-of-the century style inn, which was quaint and adorable. We had a fireplace in our room and coffee waiting at our door each morning. The progressive dinner was the highlight of the evening. We met many different people and had some amazing food. This was my husband's first time to Door County. It was great to see what had changed and even better to see what hadn't."
Joy Bartolini and Eric Wollan (Jack, 3rd grade, and Kate, 1st grade) won both the Chicago Bulls tickets and the special Santa appearance. Joy said that, "Eric and I were really excited to learn that Santa Claus would be making a visit to our house AND that we had the winning bid on 4 Bulls tickets. The kids were amazed to see Santa walk through the door! We hid the Bulls tickets in Jack and Kate's stocking and they were thrilled to discover them Christmas morning. - they'd never been to a Bulls game before and Jack has recently joined MCA's 3rd grade basketball team, so interest in the sport has been particularly high in our household! We had a fantastic time at the game - pregame show was fun, seats were great and the Bulls won!"
Kristan Richards (Ella, 1st grade) won the two handmade dolls outfits sized for American Girls dolls. She said, "The outfits were so original, beautifully designed and extremely well made. I gave them to Ella as a special Christmas gift from me for the holidays. She absolutely loved receiving them and it was as if Christmas came a bit early for her. It was definitely fun and exciting to win the doll outfits online, but the joy the gift brought Ella was just priceless."

Out of the Mouths of Babes News From PreSchool & Kindergarten
Mrs. Davidson said her kindergarten class is now very knowledgeable about Groundhogs Day. Here's what she had to say: "We read a non-fiction book about groundhogs and how they hibernate, then compared it to a fictional book, Wake Up Groundhog. We looked at the Brookfield Zoo website and predicted whether Tumbleweed, the resident groundhog would see his shadow or not. Since it was a grey, snowy day here in Chicago, our groundhog did not see his shadow. If we follow the dictates of the legend, we should see Spring arrive soon in Chicago. The official groundhog in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow, however; so the class was divided as to which groundhog is correct. We made an accordion booklet showing the order of things that could happen on Groundhog Day, and each child chose the ending they wanted depending on whether they believed our local groundhog, or Phil. My heart is with Tumbleweed, but having lived in Chicago all my life, I think we will have at least six more weeks of Winter here." |

Cyber Safety Attention Middle School Parents
On January 25, Ms. Vernita Gray, a member of the Cook County State's Attorney Office Division of Community Outreach & Special Events Unit came to MCA to speak candidly with parents about Cyber Safety and Teen Dating Violence. The team travels extensively around Chicagoland area schools to discuss this important topic with parents and students. This was an extremely important and eye opening discussion as MCA parents learned that in the state of Illinois, "sexting" (i.e. emailing a suggestive photo via a cell phone) is a felony and punishable by up to 25 years in jail! In addition, in the state of Illinois, a child would be tried as an adult and if found guilty, would be considered a sex offender and have to register the rest of his or her life. These were just a few tips shared at the meeting. The parents who attended felt very strongly about our children knowing this information and Principal Staszcuk explained that 7th and 8th graders will be attending an assembly to educate them about this topic in the coming months.

I'm First, I'm Second News from First and Second Grades
Mrs. Cox' first grade made Valentine's Day cards for their soldiers serving overseas. Won't they be thrilled to learn they have a Valentine so far away! Students also went to the library to get non-fiction books to do some research for a writing project!
And Mrs. Patel's first grade students have turned into scientists! For the past two weeks they have been learning about teeth, health, and the scientific process in their mini unit on Dental Health. They learned about these questions: Why we need teeth? What types of teeth do people have? How to keep the teeth healthy? What tools people need to keep their teeth healthy? How bacteria can grow faster in our mouths? What plaque can do to enamel on teeth? How to make careful observations and detailed written observations? Presently, they are conducting a science experiment using eggs to model the enamel on our teeth. First, they soaked them in fluoride toothpaste for several days, and then they will expose them to acid (vinegar) to see what happens to the shell of the egg. Students will form predictions and then conclusions about what this means for their own teeth! |

A Reminder Message From Your Guardian Angel Safety First!
Mornings are hectic for everyone and there are always going to be days that we "push" it with respect to our timeliness. Please don't "push" it with respect to your safety and the safety of other children and families. Please be mindful that parking on Belmont Avenue facing east, with your flashers on and running your child across the street in front of the school building is not safe. Not only does it endanger you and your child, it endangers the rest of the MCA family standing on the sidewalk. If a car were to swerve out of control, only God knows what could happen. It is considered jay walking and jay walking is illegal. Please walk to a cross walk (Halsted Street & Belmont, Broadway & Belmont, and east of our school near the church) or simply plan more time in the morning or park in the lot.
And speaking of the parking lot, if you like to pull in and drop off your child, please PULL IN ALL THE WAY. When you don't there are other parents at risk of being half in the lot and half on a very busy Belmont Avenue. Additionally, children are trying to walk through this area to get to school. We have all seen too many close calls. Thank you for respecting others and rethinking your morning drop off!

Lost & Found
Reminder!
This Friday is Jeans day...and remember what that means for Lost & Found! All items left in Lost & Found will be taken to the Lakeview Pantry at the end of each "Jeans Day."
Currently, with the snow and colder weather, our LOST pile has grown significantly. We would like every child and parent to have an opportunity to FIND their belongings before its removal. It is worth a brief look-over. Your child might be missing something you aren't aware of. There are many MCA sweaters, sweatshirts, sweat pants, gloves, hats, mittens, snow pants, shoes, boots, lunch bags, etc.
If the items are labeled in an obvious way (inside tag area), the article will be returned to the classroom. Please remind your children to stuff hats, gloves, and scarves into coat sleeves whenever they disrobe.

MCA Student Council
MCA Families Continue To Reach Out To Our Community
The MCA Student Council would like to thank every family who contributed to its Winter Clothing Drive. The boxes in both the main hallway and the third floor were overflowing when Lakeview Pantry came to pick up the winter clothing on Friday. With snow and below freezing temperatures forecasted for the week ahead (and we know days beyond), the Student Council hopes that the warm socks, mittens, hats, and coats generously donated by MCA families will keep many of our neighbors warm through the rest of our cold Chicago winter. Thank you for your continued support MCA!
Enjoy the photos of student council loading your donations!

Girls and Boys In Science!
MCA Celebrated Science
MCA Science Night was a huge success! Last Thursday night Mount Carmel middle school students were treated to an evening of Forensic Science. Girls, boys and parents learned about the science of firearms and cartridge identification from three gracious lady scientists from the Illinois State Police Forensic Science Center in Chicago. Dena, Beth and Diana introduced land and groove identification and showed how to compare fired cartridge cases. Dena, Beth and Diana also told the story of their careers and encouraged all students to consider a career in forensic science! It was an enlightening evening for all!
