Public school students outperform private school peers in math

In another study that turns conventional wisdom about public-versus-private-school education on its head, a team of
University of Illinois education professors has found that public-school students outperform their private-school classmates on standardized math tests, thanks to two key factors: certified math teachers and a modern, reform-oriented math curriculum.

Texas 8th graders earn top national rankings on science exam

According to test results recently released by the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), every major ethnic group in Texas scored higher on the redesigned eighth-grade NAEP science test than did their peers nationally, and white students earned the second-highest score in the country. Hispanic students in Texas rank 7th in the nation and African-American students rank 8th. Fourth graders also did very well on the NAEP science exam. White students earned the third highest score in the nation; African-American students rank 4th in the nation among the 50 states; and Hispanic students rank 19th.

EDITORIAL NOTE: When scores of these subgroups are averaged together Texas 8th graders rank 26th and Texas 4th graders rank 36th. Texas Hispanics and African-American subgroups represent a substantially larger percentage of kids than in most other states and therefore their results, which are influenced by higher percentages of economically disadvantage and Limited English Proficient kids, lower the overall average scores for the state. This is why it is important to break down the results by subgroup to reveal an accurate picture of where our Texas students really rank.  This is a phenomenon known as Simpson's Paradox if you'd like to Google it and learn more.

Texas education system earns top spot in Achieve review

A new report issued today by the bipartisan education reform group, Achieve, found that Texas is the only state in the country to implement all key college and career readiness policies identified by the organization. Achieve conducts an annual survey of all 50 states and the District of Columbia to determine whether they have implemented strategic college and career readiness policies. Texas was the only state to receive a check mark in the five areas Achieve graded - alignment of curriculum standards, graduation requirements, assessments, P-20 data systems and accountability systems. The accountability measure examined whether a state annually reported school performance information publicly, set state performance goals, provided school-level incentives and employed measurements that were weighted heavily towards college and career readiness indicators.  Texas was the only state that achieved all four accountability criteria.

The amazing truth about PISA scores: USA beats Western Europe, ties with Asia

Source:  Super-Economy Blog by Tino Sanandaji

What I have learned recently and want to share with you is that once we correct (even crudely) for demography in the 2009 PISA scores, American students outperform Western Europe by significant margins and tie with Asian students.

EDITORIAL NOTE:  The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an internationally standardised assessment that was jointly developed by participating economies and administered to15-year-olds in schools.
