Energy Tip of the Month brought to you by FOTPS Sponsor, Schneider Electric

Did you know that Texas ISDs have received over $2M in rebates from Texas utility providers?
Most transmission distribution service providers (TDSP) are required by Senate Bill 7 and the Public Utility Regulatory Act (PURA) to reduce their demand escalation by a minimum of 10% each year. One way the TDSPs are meeting this requirement is through energy efficiency incentive programs for updating lighting and mechanical systems. Many school districts have capitalized on this and earned free dollars as they do their part to lighten the load on the electric grid. For more information visity the Schneider Electric website at
Miss Information The facts and misconceptions of public education through the eyes of an educator, mom, and proud product of public schools.
Election season is once again upon us. For educators that means several things ranging from bond and tax rate elections to new city council members and Mayors, not to mention an unending string of irritating television ads. It also means another legislative session is around the corner. Back in my school PR days few things worried us as much as the bi-annual legislative session. Our trusty State Legislature holds in its hands the fate of our accountability system, our funding, our healthcare, our calendar, our school buses, our snack foods (or lack thereof) . . . you get the picture.
From their offices in Austin a group of people, most of whom have never worked in education, decide our future for the next two years, and most of that future was unfunded and requires a lot of paperwork.
We saw them as the enemy.
And yet, the longer I worked in education the more I began to see a different kind of enemy. One far more dangerous and far more prevalent than our friends in Austin.
The enemy was us.

New Yorker article defends public schools
SCHOOLWORK by Nicholas Lemann
A hundred years ago, eight and a half per cent of American seventeen-year-olds had a high-school degree, and two per cent of twenty-three-year-olds had a college degree. Now, on any given weekday morning, you will find something like fifty million Americans, about a sixth of the population, sitting under the roof of a public-school building, and twenty million more are students or on the faculty or the staff of an institution of higher learning. Education is nowhere mentioned in the Constitution; the creation of the world's first system of universal public education-from kindergarten through high school-and of mass higher education is one of the great achievements of American democracy. It embodies a faith in the capabilities of ordinary people that the Founders simply didn't have.

Note of Appreciation
Mr. and Mrs. Milder,
Thank you very much for standing so strongly in support of our schools. In a time when everyone from politicians to the news media and even the documentary film world are taking shots at us and criticizing all that we do, it is a joy and a relief to have some caring people taking the opposite stance.
If more people knew the true story of public schools, they would see the "wait for Superman" is over. I have heroes teaching in every part of my building: people who give tirelessly of themselves every day to make a difference.
Thank you for getting the word out.
Keep up the good work!

Record numbers of Texas students take the SAT and make the grade
Texas public schools had 123,154 seniors who took the college admissions test in 2010, a 10,678 student increase over 2009. Normally, with an increase in test takers a correlating decline in scores can be expected. Not the case in Texas!
SAT scores for all subgroups remained steady or showed improvement despite the dramatic increase in test takers.

Now's the time to begin booking your keynote speaker for 2011 events and back to school convocations!"
Leslie Milder is a great presenter with valuable information about achievements in Texas public schools and what we can do to help students, teachers, and parents.
"I wanted to let you know how utterly impressed I was with the speech you gave for our annual breakfast. I've been with the Graham ISD 5 years now, and yours, by far, has been the best breakfast presentation during that time. I've known for 5 years that Graham is a great place to be, but as a result of your speech, I'm convinced now more than ever how blessed I am to be where I am and doing what I do. Thank you so much for giving all of us a great start to our year!"
