Fifth Annual Friend of the Year Award Ceremony and Reception
Honoring
Mr. Harvey B. Hohenberger, Jr.
December 2, 2009
The Frontiers of Flight Museum
6911 Lemon Avenue in Dallas Reception at 5:30 pm, followed by dinner and award ceremony
Each year Friends of Texas Public Schools honors a Texan who, through words and actions, has emerged as a champion for public education. This year we are delighted to honor Mr. Harvey B. Hohenberger, Jr., Executive Director of the Region 8 Education Service Center, as Texas Public Schools Friend of the Year. As director of Region 8, Harvey works with 19 other regional directors and the Texas Education Agency to influence the educational process across the state. Since joining Region 8 in 2003, he developed the vision and concept that led to the development of the aligned curriculum model now known as CSCOPE and manages TIPS, The Interlocal Purchasing Cooperative, which is used across eight states allowing school districts to purchase from approved vendors at competitive prices without having to place bids.
He began his career in education in 1974 as a teacher/coach in Cooper, Texas. While superintendent of Chisum ISD in Paris, Texas, the district became one of the first in the state to implement a performance/standards curriculum in grades K-12 and to create a 21st century curriculum based on student performance plus state and national standards.

He recognized the importance of celebrating educators through his work. Please join Friends in celebrating the life of an outstanding man who had a powerful impact on everyone who knew him. Strong gains on AP exams
Texas students continued their push for excellence by posting an increasing number of scores of three, four and five on national Advanced Placement tests, the Texas Education Agency announced recently.
Minority students in particular posted impressive gains of double-digit percentages in the number of students achieving a grade of three or higher over scores in 2008 according to figures from the College Board, which oversees the AP program.
