Greetings!    

May is another busy month here at ARB as the season and the school year accelerate to a close.  Last month, we kept busy with the 26th Annual DANCE POWER "Waiting in the Wings" performance (see right sidebar), company auditions and another fun and informative On Pointe.

ARB received generous support from the National Endowment for the Arts and American Music Center to present American Classics at Rutgers University's Victoria J. Mastrobuono Theater this month.  

Don't miss this performance which will feature: Twyla Tharp's Eight Jelly Rolls with LIVE MUSIC performed by Jonathan Benjamin and Vince Giordano's Nighthawks.  

Vince Giordano and his Nighthawks are known for their expertise in the 1920s jazz music featured in this piece.  The group has contributed to many films, including those of Woody Allen, and appear regularly as the band in HBO's hit show, Boardwalk Empire.  

Also on the program: Philip Jerry's Our Town, will feature Michelle de Fremery and Joshua Kurtzberg in the lead roles;Randy James has set a duet from The Heart is a Lonely Hunter on the company;and Patrick Corbin's Follia and Douglas Martin's Ephemeral Possessions will round out the evening.

Princeton Ballet School presents 

Coppélia on May 7, 2011 at Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton, NJ at 2:00 and 7:00pm. 

 

Described by George Balanchine as "ballet's great comedy,"Coppélia is a classic love story, originally choreographed and presented by Arthur Saint-Léon in 1870, and set to music by Léo Delibes.  The School's adaptation is directed by Douglas Martin and Mary Pat Robertson and includes additional re-staging and choreography by Princeton Ballet faculty members Laurie Abramson, Sherry Alban, Mary Barton, Jennifer Gladney, Annie Gribbins, Erika Mero, Katie Scibienski and Maria Youskevitch

Maria Katarina Rafael, an East Brunswick senior in the School's Professional Training Program and Shaye Firer, a Trainee who has appeared alongside the Company in several productions this year, will take on the challenging lead roll of "Swanhilda."  They will be joined by guest Company dancers Marc St-Pierre and Edward Urwin in the lead roles.

On April 11, third grade students in New Brunswick came together to show their family and friends what they learned this year in ARB's DANCE POWER program:

Shayla Jones, who is now a senior at New Brunswick High School, performed her solo from Coppélia.  A DANCE POWER Scholar since 2002, Jones will join American Repertory Ballet and Princeton Ballet School's Trainee Program next year:
