President's Message    Robin Struck
Happy Spring/Early Summer Greetings!

I know that when ice is out in March, lawns are bare before April, and we are installing mulch by April Fool's Day, it is a most unusual spring in Maine!  Let me borrow the words of one of my childhood favorites, Jackie Gleason, and say "How sweet it is!"  I certainly hope it continues for us all.  As I sit at my desk writing this article we are receiving some much needed rain -- stay away from my weekends please!

The next few months will be crazy busy for us all so I want you to turn your calendars to Thursday, September 13, 2012 and save the date!  NENA will continue our 100th Anniversary Celebration at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA with a luncheon, garden tours, a commemorative planting and more!  Did you know that the well-known retailer, L.L. Bean is celebrating its 100th as well?  We may not have the 'Bean boot' to brag about, but we have a history just as rich with stories about trail-blazing mentors, outstanding excellence in customer service, and beautiful landscapes which enhance our living and working spaces in New England and beyond.

I wish you all a healthy and prosperous season and I hope to see you on September 13 to celebrate our centennial!

Best wishes,

Robin Struck
President

NENA Member Earns "Best of Show"
at Boston Flower Show

NENA flower show12

March 14-18, 2012 -- Thousands of New Englanders attended the Boston Flower Show at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.  Congratulations to NENA member Ahronian Landscaping & Design of Holliston, MA who collaborated with Medway Garden Center to create an award-winning display (see photo above, on left) - walking away with "Best of Show!"

NENA was proud to sponsor an award "presented to the exhibit that best utilizes a range of New England native plants, and their cultivars, in a visually appealing and environmentally sensible setting."  The NENA award was presented to the Garden Design School USA of Wellesley, MA for their naturalized rooftop woodland garden display (photo above, right).  Our thanks to Ed Bemis, Virginia Wood and Peter House, who served as NENA judges.

Growers Report Scam Letter, Purportedly From USDA

The USDA reports that its officials have learned that fraudulent letters, and at least one fraudulent phone call, have been received by individuals, farms and businesses in several states.  The letters are faxed and appear to be from the USDA, bearing the USDA logo and seal.  The letters and call are requesting personal and financial information.  The USDA first learned of the letters on March 16, and is investigating the matter through the Office of the Inspector General.  If you receive such a letter, do not provide your personal and financial information and please report the matter to the USDA.

Visit from RI Governor

On April 9, Governor Chafee visited The Farmer's Daughter in South Kingstown, RI to meet with representatives from the Rhode Island Nursery & Landscape Assoc. to learn about the significant contributions of the nursery and landscape industry to Rhode Island's economy in many important areas.

Judge Issues Injunction, Blocks H2B Rules

On April 26, a federal judge in northern Florida issued a preliminary injuction blocking the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) from implementing a new rule that would have fundamentally altered - for the worse - the H2B temporary and seasonal worker program that is important to many nursery and landscape industry employers.  The rule was set to take effect April 27 and it will also impact the DOL's plan to implement the wage rule on October 1.  While the ruling was in Florida, the decision applies nationwide.

2013 All-America Rose

Francis Meilland won the hearts of judges to become the 2013 All-America Rose Selection. Rosa 'Meitroni', known in the trade as Francis Meilland (PP 19970) has become the tenth rose in All-America Rose Selections' annual competition to stand alone.  In the more than 70 years of evaluations, only nine before Francis Meilland have been solo winners.  Click here to read more.

Bigelow Nurseries Donates Trees to School

When a fifth-grader in Northborough, MA decided to raise funds to replace trees that her school lost during October's nor'easter, Bigelow Nurseries stepped up and matched the donation and provided 12 quality trees for the shools.  Well done!  Click here to read the newspaper article.
