Helpful Business Book Reviews
for NENA Members
Reading business books can be helpful, but who has the time to read all the great ones that are out there? Well, never fear...some of your fellow NENA members have done the work for you. At the NENA Annual Meeting, on Friday, February 3, 2012 during New England Grows in Boston, the popular NENA Business Book Club was held for the third consecutive year. In this portion of the association's annual gathering, member volunteers talked about books that inspired them and shared the "take-aways" that they plan to apply to their nursery and retail businesses. You can read the 2012 book reviews, as well as those from previous years, by clicking here. Our thanks to the following members who were book reviewers at the February event: Tina Bemis, Bemis Farms Nursery; Benjamin Burdick, Johnson Farms, Inc.; and Wayne Mezitt, Weston Nurseries.
If you would like to volunteer to serve as a Business Book Club reviewer at NENA's annual meeting on February 8, 2013, please make your selection from the Business Book Club List, and contact the NENA office with your selection via e-mail, or phone (508) 653-3112. Thank you.

Breakfast, Business Book Club & More!
NENA's Annual Meeting was held at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center during New England Grows. About 100 members enjoyed a delicious breakfast, caught up with old friends, made new connections, and participated in NENA's Business Book Club. Amidst a flurry of confetti and party hats, association president Robin Struck, launched NENA's centennial celebration year! She recounted the organization's achievements to date and announced that the official 100th anniversary celebration will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA. So save the date and help us spread the word. We want as many members as possible to help celebrate 100 years of NENA! Stay tuned for more information.

New England Grows & Garden Center Success Seminar a Big Hit!

More than 13,000 green industry professionals participated in New England Grows, held February 1 - 3, 2012 in Boston. New England Grows is one of the largest and most popular green industry conferences in North America. The record-setting attendance, exciting vendors, show specials, and impressive education program created a positive buzz across the green industry. Special thanks to NENA member Rich Clark who represented NENA on the New England Grows board of directors as President this year. Many thanks also to the NENA representatives on the New England Grows education committee: Robin Struck of D.R. Struck Landscape Nursery, and Carol MacLeod of Evergreen Gardens in Vermont. Handouts from many of the seminars are still posted on Grows' website education page.

In addition to educational seminars on social media, plants, creating outdoor rooms, soil and other topics...many NENA members also attended the Garden Center Success seminar, held the first day of the 3-day conference. Retail professionals gave the program high praise. Attendees heard presentations by: best-selling author & founder of FAST COMPANY magazine Bill Taylor; Chad Harris of the Garden Gates in Louisiana; and Kimberly Sevilla of Rose Red & Lavender of Brooklyn, NY. Additionally, the following New England retail professionals shared "Real Time" examples of what's working in their businesses: Robin Struck, Rich Clark, Mike Skillin of Skillins Greenhouses in Falmouth, MA, and Cameron Bonsey of Coast of Maine in Portland, ME. Thank you to the sponsors of Garden Center Success: AJT Supplies, Ball, Coast of Maine, The Landscape Institute, Imperial Nurseries, Overdevest Nurseries, Pleasant View, and Prides Corner Farms. Based on participant feedback, another Garden Center Success seminar will be held in February 2013!
