The Center of the Italian Wine Universe I recently had the opportunity to visit Tuscany or Toscana as it is known in Italy. It is the center of the Italian wine Universe (in particular, Montalcino and Montepulciano). In Montalcino, I began my tasting tour in a wine shop in a castle where they serve the finest wines Tuscany has to offer. I learned that Sangiovese is varied and wonderful.
Then there are the Super Tuscan wines. These wines are made from Cabernet, Syrah, Sangiovese or a combination of these grapes (and others). The primary grape grown In Tuscany is Sangiovese and it is the most important native red of Italy. In "Vino Italiano" by David Lynch and Joseph Bastianich, they describe the many faces of Sangiovese;
In sangiovese you get not only a telltale aroma and flavor of black cherry but a distinctive savory that roots the wine in Tuscany. A good Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino or Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has a foresty, smoky quality. Drinking it is like eating berries in the woods, the spicy scents of the underbrush mingling with the sweetness of the fruit.
For our tasting this month, I would like to share what I discovered on my trip to Tuscany,
Prosecco (the champagne of Italy),
A white from Veneto, Fruili,
Campania,
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano,
Brunello,
Super Tuscan,
Vin Santo,
$35.00 RSVP by the 20th.
On April 23rd, Auberge will be hosting an evening of wine tasting fun discovering Italian wines from Tuscany along with great food and conversation. Please join us for this memorable evening. Kristin Scheelar; Wine Sommelier |
