Antioxidants: The Skin's Body Guard to Damage and Premature Aging Antioxidants help to protect against UV (sun) damage, free radicals, and the overall aging process. Antioxidants are naturally-occurring substances composed of mainly vitamins and minerals. The most notably polyphenols are found in most plants to varying degrees. Antioxidants help to ward off and neutralize damaged skin cells which lead to a dull matted texture, uneven skin tone, dark circles, and wrinkles. They even help to prevent deadly skin cancer. Antioxidants are an essential part of your daily skin care regimen. Oldies but goodies include vitamins A, C and E, green tea, idebenone and bioflavonoids. Some of the newer options include coffeeberry, acai, rosemary, DMAE, white tea, CoQ10/ubiquinol, alpha lipoic acid and hyaluronic acid. My favorites include Obagi Vitamin C 15% serum, Skin Script Vitamin C/Green Tea serum, Revale Intensive Recovery, Jan Marini Age Intervention, and Skin Medica Vitamin A,C,E complex. These products are great for morning use with your sunscreen on top. Be protected all day long and ward off the damage. Shop our online store for any of the products mentioned in our newsletter. |
Healthy Eating = Healthy Skin Recent research suggests that you can do even more to protect your skin past just applying a daily sunscreen. Studies show that eating a diet high in vitamins C and E can slow damage to your cells from the inside out. Especially when combined, vitamins C and E can reduce sunburn reactions which lead to an increased risk for skin damage and even skin cancer. The Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicated that Vitamin C lowered the likelihood of the appearance of dry wrinkled skin and aided in allowing the skin to age well. Foods high in vitamin C include sweet bell peppers, mangos, tomatoes and brussel sprouts. Foods high in vitamin E include avocado, nuts, seeds, whole grains and leafy green veggies. See foodnetwork.comfor a great recipe for Mango Avocado Salsa. This is a tasty addition to any grilled fish dish or mahi tacos. In good skin health, Sarah |
