Greetings!

These Notes & Notables are going out a bit early so that I can remind and encourage everyone to attend the 4th Annual Founders Day Fair on September 1st.   There will be music all day, crafts and demonstrations, a Civil War Encampment, and much more!  Inside the Museum there will be a special display honoring our Founding Families, as well as the current exhibit "Roads, Rails & Trails."

Autumn is always a busy and beautiful time in Transylvania County and we have many activities scheduled over the next few months.  Believe it or not, our Christmas display is not that far off.  This year's theme is the 1950's.  Take a look around your basement or attic and if you have anything to loan for the display, please let me know!

Sincerely - Rebecca Suddeth, Executive Director
New Website for the Museum

The Sesquicentennial lives on through books, music, video productions and in the hearts and minds of all the many residents who participated in the year long celebration of Transylvania County's 150th birthday.

An important part of the celebration was the official website where histories where collected and stories were told.  The county wanted to preserve this treasure, and this has been accomplished by gifting the format and content to the Transylvania Heritage Museum for use as their official website.  Not only will the site be in safe hands but it will also thrive and grow under an organization whose mission is to connect community, history and life.

The website preserves the histories and historical photographs of the tc150 website, and also has all the information that pertains to the Museum and its activities.  The site will be live as on September 4rd. Do you have stories to tell?  Visit  www.transylvaniaheritage.org and tell us your story!

Reminiscing at told carhe Museum Cruise In

The Hoodlum Cruisers will be holding an open show cruise in at the Museum on September 22, from 11 am until 3 pm.  There is no fee to enter, and there will be awards for the Top Five entries.  There will be hot dogs for sale, door prizes and 50/50 tickets.  Make plans to attend as either a participant or a visitor.  All proceeds go to support the Museum.  We would like to thank our Award Sponsors:  Collector Car Appraisals, Hooper Insurance Agency, Jerome & Summey, Inc., The White Squirrel Shoppe, Think It Studio and WSQL Radio.  Please drop by these businesses and thank them for supporting the Transylvania Heritage Museum.

Monarch Waystation Museum becomes Monarch Waystation

Each fall, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies migrate from the US and Canada to overwintering areas in Mexico and California, and then make their return flights in the spring.  The monarch migration is a natural wonder, but it is being threatened by habitat losses in North America.

Monarch Waystations are places that provide resources for monarchs to produce successive generations and sustain their migration.  The monarch needs milkweed in their spring breeding areas and fall flowers for for nectar to sustain their long journey.

The Gardens and Grounds of the Museum have been designated as a Monarch Waystation.  In this way, the Museum will help assure the preservation of the species and the continuation of the Monarch Migration.

Scarecrows on the Lawn

This month, be working on your scarecrow entries for this October event.  The Museum is hoping to showcase early entries in windows throughout downtown during October.  There are no entry fees this year, so make more than one!  First place Scarecrow wins $50, second place wins $30 and third place wins $20.  Download an entry form and details here.
